ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Survival against the odds
Despite a very turbulent beginning, all six kestrel chicks have survived and are now almost ready to fledge the nest and begin their lives as independent falcons. Their story is one of survival against all the odds and shows how the fortitude shown by their parent birds kept them safe.
Danger never far away
Throughout their short lives, the adult female kestrel, Mrs Kes, has had to fight off raids on her nest but despite these dangerous disruptions all six chicks hatched!
Hatching
This film shows you the moment the first chick hatches, still damp from the egg and completely helpless, and captures the tender moment Mrs Kes looks down to see her chick for the first time. Two hours later a second hatchling makes an appearance.
First meals
By the time they are just a few hours old, the hatchlings instinctively call and raise their beaks to be fed. Mrs Kes is a good mother and tears up tiny morsels with care. In contrast, Mr Kes hasn't a clue. His job is to hunt for food, but he does not know how to actually feed his chicks. When he arrives with a vole and Mrs Kes is not there, he simply dumps it on top of them. These chicks are only a few hours old, and the vole is bigger than they are! Thankfully, Mrs Kes comes to the rescue. Unlike the male, she knows what to do and tears it into small pieces to feed the chicks.
First night - and the nest is attacked
As night falls and the new family settle down for a well earned rest, an unwanted visitor appears at the entrance to the nest. Its a barn owl and it is on the attack. Mrs Kes jumps to attention, grappling the intruding barn owl by its face. She evicts the owl, but, 20 minutes later, it's back!
Mrs Kes doesn't hesitate to rally her strength yet again to do everything she can to protect her chicks, skilfully grasping the barn owl’s legs until the owl retreats.
Identifying the intruder
I have a network of surveillance cameras in my garden and know all of the animals that live here individually. Using close-ups and a review of each camera I can determine the whereabouts of each barn owl at the time of the attack. It is soon clear that the perpetrator is Willow, a female that roosts in a box I built on a tower behind my workshop. At one time Willow used this nest box, perhaps she still feels a claim to it.
Kestrel resilience
Despite her ordeal, Mrs Kes gets straight back to her eggs and gathers them back under her, revealing just what a remarkable bird she is. She is rewarded the next day with a third hatchling. Over the next two days, the three remaining eggs hatch out successfully.
Kestrel life
It’s a pleasure to get an insight into the lives of these special birds and to see how their resilience and determination in fighting off threats ensured the survival of this brood.
Watch the kestrels fly
Keep an eye on the livecams to watch them looking out of the entrance and flapping their wings as they prepare for their first flights.

The father not knowing exactly how to feed his kids reminds me of the time my wife went out for dinner with friends and I had to feed our 1 year old daughter. I love Indian and my wife hates it, so I made myself a lamb vindaloo on rice and my daughter some mashed peas. Well, she didn't want no peas, she wanted daddy's food. So what did I do? I gave her a bowl of nuclear-hot curry and rice. She loved the first bite and started stuffing it in...and then the heat hit. The smiles turned to screams and all I could do was panic, give her milk and bread, and eventually she calmed down. Then while my back was turned, dug into the curry again! repeat....When my wife got home, all she said was 'You are on diaper duty tomorrow." Sure enough, the kid overflowed front and back with her first case of the 'ring of fire'. Anyway, don't let new dads feed kids. Nature knows it, and now I know it.

Such precious babies. Such great parents, even if the dad doesn't feed them, he's a great hunter and overseer for the chicks. During those attacks mom was doing her absolute best to not fall on and crush her chicks and eggs while trying to keep her attention on keeping Willow out. You can see how she tried to fall away or towards the camera. I wonder if her wings being out and her tail feathers fanning out helped with that too? That egg that got knocked away from the others was lucky not to have gotten knocked sooner. Was worried it'd get crushed if the fight continued. Also, your editing is really good too! The VHS rewinding was cute and cool, it was like a time lapse of their growth.

Odd, even in the human kingdom the male is often confused with what to do when left with the young. I have unfortunately have observed that in humans in many, many homes.

This helps me understand why females demand the male be a good provider so much. They invest so much of their energy and life to rearing the young, fighting off predators, etc. that if her partner is a dunce, then she'll suffer for it and their offspring will likely die. Choosing a mate is so important in nature, humans as well.

So much credit to Mrs. Kes for doing what it takes to defend her babies! I was so scared for her and the chicks but so pleased she's stay strong and got through it. Super mom she is!! Also, Mr. Kes did so well at being vigilant and being a great provider to his family. What a team! What a story and glad the family persevered through it all! Thank you Robert for sharing this update with the Kestrels and helping them along the way!!

What's with the thumbs down? If you choose to watch the video, that means you're probably interested. I don't understand why anyone would do a thumbs down unless it was thumbing down the bird fights. That I understand. However, the video is wonderful quality, with a handsome and well spoken naturalist. What was seen is nature. Good, bad and indifferent... it's the nature of nature. I just dont want anyone doing a thumbs down on our wonderful host and his professional videos! Robert, hope you and your beautiful family are well and happy!

Hey there! Amazing video, these kestrel chicks really are a miracle. Mrs. Kes is clearly very experienced and is amazing at protecting the eggs and now the keslets at all costs! I had a question regarding what Mrs. Kes is feeding the chicks- Are the mice she feeds the keslets part of the supplemental feeding sources REF offers the birds, or did she catch them on her own? I believe someone said that the feeding post has hen chicks, so did Mrs. Kes catch those mice on her own? Thank you for this wonderful video, it'll be a bittersweet moment when our sweet keslets leave the nest, but they'll forever be in our hearts ❤ Sending lots of love from California, USA!
