Kestrel fights female LEO for nest box

This box has usually been a kestrel box, but this year, a LEO pair got interested in it. Last night, Mrs LEO laid her fist egg, and was sitting in the box in the morning, when the female kestrel also interested in this box arrived. Fierce small kestrel vs larger owl. For now, the kestrel won.

Bro has like 150+ of them I think. Sometimes the kestrels go to like 6 nests and STILL fight owls just to see inside the 7th.

In the end, the owls win. Kestrel's final cry is heard. This voice is quite distinctive.

Usually the father owl is out hunting for food, while mom stays behind and guards the nest and eggs/babies.

Given the owls can and will eat adult kestrels like that if they can take them unawares at night, you can't blame the kestrel for hazing her. The universal hatred of owls is probably why owls nest so early.

The kestrels actually won in this case. Their strategy is to stress out the owl enough for them to leave. And they did as far as I'm aware. I would have to check again, but last I did the egg was abandoned.

@@ChrisM541 It took this long for the kestrel to decide and actually take the nest. They just laid like 2 days ago. It was more important for them to chase away the owls then to actually start brooding it seems.

We who follow this box for a while now abbreviate the Long-eared Owl (Asio Otus) as LEO. Hope that clears it up.

No, there were two nests to avoid fighting, but the kestrel really wanted this one. They got their way, she just laid her first egg today. If they settle, I might be able to make an update.
