Witnessed one of these amazing murmurations in my back yard along the Rancocas Creek in Riverside NJ. I was spellbound. I thought to call my neighbor to witness the beautiful dance. It is one of the most amazing, if not THE most amazing thing, I have ever seen. It didn’t even occur to me to get a camera. It started at approximately 6 pm one crisp evening. Thousands of birds were lined up on wires and in trees. The chattering of all the birds drew my attention & I thought I was in a scene from the birds. Then the church bells from St. Peter’s church started ringing & the birds took off as one. All during the ringing & for at least 15 minutes after, I watched them dance. I have witnessed many amazing things in my life, but that flight on that day was a coordinated effort in which they started as one, broke off into 2 groups, then 4 groups, criss crossing each other in perfect synchronization. Back & forth, breaking apart, performing aerial coordination in groups. Identical maneuvers that kept me spellbound until they ended in 2 identical tornadoes spinning opposite directions down into their roosting place. Enthralling! I witnessed a miracle of nature that day. I have since moved from that town, but I talk to my neighbor occasionally. They still dance in Riverside. I think the township is trying to sell off the wetlands where these birds roost. I thank God for the experience of witnessing these birds. It was truly a miracle.
