19 year old rookie Kevin Garnett worked out with Kevin McHale, then the VP of Basketball Operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
McHale, one of the greatest low-post players in history, drafted KG straight out of high school in 1995. KG obviously learned a lot from his sessions with McHale, and himself became one of the greatest power forwards ever.
This rare footage aired on TNT during the Celtics-Mavericks game on MLK Day, January 18, 2010.

Kevin Mchale what a great career,six-man of the year and NBA titles, sadly injures keep him away from 20,000 or more points, K D was from SC and also had a great career, and it's nice to see races working together.

all time NBA team made up of players called Kevins: PG: Kevin Johnson SG: Kevin Durant SF: Kevin Garnett PF: Kevin McHale C: Kevin Willis (Durant and Garnett are both moved to a smaller spot but they can play both) bench: Kevin Love, Kevin Martin

Imagine if KG moved more toward the cup in the low post the way Mchale did? We'd be talking greatest scorer of all time class of player... If you put Mchale's skill overall on offense, KG's Jumper(mchale had one too though), KG's overall D....you'd have Hakeem again.

Yeah except kg was faster and a better shooter than Hakeem... but Hakeem got way more steals.

@@derekdebomb9964 in my opinion hakeem was a better statistical defender and his defensive impact is better than kg

@@DLXN-lp9cj no. Advanced stats unanimously favor KG in the defensive end such as RPM, APM and PIPM. KG also anchored defenses such as the legendary 08 Celtics defense which the Rockets never came close to with Hakeem.

@SolidSnakeRules that was only for a year or 2 out of 10 they could have tried harder to get him some help and sam cassle and spreewell were at the end of their careers so they were stars anymore they were right above role players and with that little help he carried the team to a deep playoff run and won mvp

Kg wasn't built for banging down low but Kevin Mchale wasn't a physical specimen himself. He should've gone to the rim move with his moves instead of settling for outside shots

Neither was Duncan, what matters more than strength in the post is skill (footwork, positioning, and timing)...and just because you're tall and skinny doesn't mean you can't be effective as a post player...a build like KG's doesn't necessarily translate to weakness

KG never did become a great offensive low-post player though, he spent most of his time hitting mid-range jumpers which he excelled at.

MerkinMuffly Yeah, very different players though each made a unique and special mark on the game. The combination of the proliferation explosive multi-positional athletes and the rising predominance of the three point shot has inexorably eroded the low post game of basketball from the 1990s on. It's hard to know what kind of place a player like Kevin McHale would still have in today's game.

He was a great post player, but not on the supreme level of McHale. Actually, Garnett was infuriating to watch at times. McHale was adamant about developing that fade-away jumper, but sometimes KG needed just to attack the basket more. I always wished he had been more aggressive down low.
