Yankee fan devastated by this news to the Wakefield family. Baseball is so tertiary when it comes to what these athletes deal with off the field and as a longtime fan of the sport and rivalry, its always ‘us’ and not ‘them’ when it gets real. All the best.

Had the chance to meet Tim many years ago. A very humble and likeable man. A wonderful representative of the Red Sox organization. He will definitely be missed.😢

I kind of just assumed he must have been sick for a while. Insane how quickly things can change. Certainly an opportunity to assess your life when you hear news this tragic. RIP Wake

My maternal grandmother was a colon cancer survivor and died 3 years ago on Oct 26 of Alzheimers and had just recently turned 78 on Sept 27, 2020 and 3 years ago that same year when the lockdowns were starting on March 14, my stepdad passed from his 4th bounty of cancer. Lung cancer from smoking and got cancer twice, so once in each and most of one lung was removed and the third time, our dog stepped on his foot, it swelled and it was skin cancer and the finisher was a very aggressive boner cancer and died at 60. My maternal uncle is a leukemia survivor and on remission. My family feels the Wakefield's pain of cancer in our family.

I'm in shock how fast this went down. RIP

What an amazing Career Tim Wakefield had! Came into the Major Leagues as a position player, but adjusted to a Knuckleball pitcher. Always had a positive attitude on and off the field! Was well respected by his teammates and opponents! I feel bad for his kids losing their Father at a young age

As a Yankees fan (not that it matters in this context), I always admired the pitcher Wakefield. As a man, he's even better. I can't imagine how devastating now having lost his wife. I guess if there is a silver lining - and I don't know there is, especially for their kids - that they are out of the bodies that betrayed the both of them. I think all Yankees fans continue to mourn and pray for the Wakefield family.

Being a Pirates fan and as Tim went to the redsox i follwed them as well. As a kid watching him with the Pirates i became obsessed with the knuckleball. I was an average baseball player, decent out fielder, average batter. But start of my sophomore year of hs i learned how to toss a knuckle ball. Well that got me on the varsity team. My other pitch was a side arm fastball...that wasn't very fast tbh. But that knuckleball got me three years of varsiity action. Much like Tim i started, closed and sometimes in blowouts just gobbled up innings to save our best guys. Ironically it was my dad who first showed me Tim playing for the Pirates and Ironically my dad passed at 57 also from a brain cancer. I was so sorry to hear of his passing, and if his wifes struggles.

Great tribute to a great guy. Unfortunately prayers don't help, The magical man in the sky wasn't around to help him and he won't be around to help any of us or the altar boys etc because he isn't real. Just be the best person you can be and forget about the fairy tales.

It's terrible. His wife is battling pancreatic cancer while he battled his own cancer. Talk about a life changing situation fml. Sad.
