In 1978 my father bought a 1953 GMC M211 2 1/2 ton army truck and he used it to work for a couple of years which inspired me to buy a 1955 GMC M135 2 1/2 ton army truck when I was 20 years old. I spent over a year doing a full restoration including stripping the entire truck to bare metal before refinishing it with epoxy paint. After all of the work was done the only components that required no work were the original GMC 302 engine the original Hydramatic transmission and the original GMC differentials. My truck had sat outside for ten years without any preparation and when I hooked up the batteries and filled the fuel tank it started right up. These engines are very durable and they make a lot of torque. My father's truck had once weighed in at 45,000 lbs and the 302 had no trouble pulling the load.

I really like this format Kevin: something is wrong with this motor- let's tear it down together and find out what! Thanks for sharing!

Great job... My Granddad used to buy the GMC Trucks cause they were more Heavier Duty than the Chevrolets. I wish they still were. Very interesting seeing you do this so thanks.

Great video Kev. Not many folks have videos on this great engine, thanks for this one. I have a 1942 1st. Series GMC 270 in my G-7107 Chevy 4 X 4. It was built with 8.5 to 1 compression and a custom grind cam that provides 440 lift and 276 duration. During W.W. 2 the engine was rated at 99 H.P., after having rebuilt the engine, it was dyno'ed at 245 B.H.P. and 390 Lb. Ft. of torque at the flywheel. It can be seen on my channel.

This is perfect. I'm trying to rebuild a 59 GMC 302 to put in a 36 chevy coupe. Really excited for these vids. Thank you

Awesome! I've designed forged pistons already and have them in production now. Will be fabricating 3 independent intakes for side draft carbs, exhaust manifolds, etc. Most likely, will run an HEI distributor and do a bunch of trick machining to heads and block. If you're interested, I could always do 2 sets of everything. Thanks for subscribing.

I am a old GMC lover still driving one over 60 years ,same motor ,also done a few things to them down the road quicker.I will have to take issue with you on the rocker shaft the chev used a two piece rocker shaft and GMC used a one piece rocker shaft. Would love to talk with other GMC lovers I thought was a dying breed!Thanks Ralph

Hey Ralph. Thanks for the comment. I'm always up for learning something new....I dont recall seeing an early Chevy I6, like a 235, with anything other than a 1 piece rocker shaft. Of course there seems to be some oddities out there that have left me scratching my head. I've seen some production things that many say never happened. Maybe you can help me with this. As you know, the GMC head, all valves are in line. Ive seen some chevy heads that are the same, but others with a intake valve with a 5 degree angle and a slight variance in both the "sheetmetal" and cast rocker arms. I'll admit I am no absolute authority on the I6 variations thru the years and have seen some weird stuff. I'm open to what you know sir if you dont mind sharing.
@ralphthomason49714 жыл бұрын
@@KevinBaxter Kevin I mean no disrespect but you've obviously never had the rocker arms off of 216 235 261 motor the oiler is in the center on the rocker arm shaft and both shafts stick in either end of a short piece of looking pipe where is the Jimmy has a continuous one piece shaft all the way through when you unbolt the rocker arms on the Chevrolet motor the rocker arm shaft are in two different pieces front and back shafts Chevrolet I had at least three or four different ways of getting oil up to the rocker shafts where is GMC use the front galley going up to the front of the head all the way from start to finish sorry but I don't have more time to go into detail but I would love to continue this later thanks Ralph
@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
Ralph, absolutely NO disrespect taken at all sir. I appreciate your candor. I actually took a few days to look back at photos of engines I've built in the past...took me forever to find them. It has been nearly a decade since i built an inline chevy and hundreds of various engine builds since that time. I've done other inlines since that were GMC, not Chevy, as my memory led me to believe. It's hard to remember every detail of every engine you've built having done so many. But...as you know, you are correct and exactly as you describe. Thanks for refreshing my memory...that's why i love KZfaq...we can all learn from each other. I know I've learned a few things from my viewers as well.

Look in a Nebraska truck salvage yard over 200 GMC military trucks and some running. And look at Bonneville Salt Records Studebaker Hawks with 302 six's super charged at one time held speed records for near 20yrs before finally broken in 70s .boost was over 50lbs.

Nice video but the Stovebolt was the nomenclature for the Chevy inline 6, not the GMC. A totally different engine.
@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Edward. You are absolutely correct, and I'm aware. I chose to use the nomenclature so that anyone rebuilding a GMC or Chevy "Stovebolt" I6 would be able to find the video. As i state in the video, while the two engines only share a rocker shaft in common, everything else is different. But the process to rebuild one is nearly the same. I felt both GMC and Chevy owners would benefit from the information.
@sceneanuerebelrebel92442 жыл бұрын
A 454 flywheel bolts onto crank ,for manual transmission sm420 or sm465 with synchro gears .Rear valves burn mainly because that's where a vacuum source is pulled from --wipers pull vacuum at carb mount area check valve rotator cups they go between rocker tips and stems ,missing or stems too short cause too.more later

I am in the middle of rebuilding a GMC 248 which is the little brother to the 302. I had it sleeved and bored out .060 over so it is now a 270. It will be interesting to see how yo do yours. I am adding a full flow oil filter to mine for better oil management and extra life to the engine. I have it drilled out and the original oil supply line plugged. About ready for assembly.
@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
Excellent. Sounds like a good build. Stock cam? Compression bump? Any head work? Curious to know more. Thanks for following. That full filtration bypass mod is a great thing to do for sure. Good on ya sir.

Great video! Just wondering... If you were able to get the engine to turn over, could you have checked the compression on each cylinder before disassembly to get a better idea of which cylinder was dead?

I have a GMC 270, I had rebuilt. It leaks oil, and I’m having issues with the v belts coming off. Is there some inside for these kind of issues? I run A/C and the 12v alternator, the motor has 20 k miles on the rebuild

Hello Kevin, I have a 58 GMC 150 that I'm getting closer to working on, motor runs, but I like to hang a automatic transmission on it, any suggestion on what might work the best. Thank you, Gerry
@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
There are several options there....but may require a custom adapter or bell housing. Speedway Motors, TCI, etc may have some options. A Powerglide (2 spd) could be a good option depending on rear end ratio. Pretty hard to beat a TH350 though or a 700R4 if you have a very low rear end and need overdrive.

Trying to get a better understanding of exactly what I have in my 1957 GMC 100. This 270 inline V6 started up n ran well last I checked. Almost ready to start up again. Want to drive as is then maybe upgrade carbs etc at some point. I’m assuming this is a pretty tough engine. I just haven’t seen another one n wondered just how rare this engine is 🤔🤔 hopefully I won’t have trouble maintaining it.

The 57 GMC did not have a V6, it had an inline 6.

Hey Kevin I have a GMC in-line 6 from a 1946 truck. The number on the block is G15878. Can you tell me what engine this is?
@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
That number isn't jiving too well from my memory. Check the numbers next to the distributor and the casting number on the left hand side of the block just above the oil pan flange. Should be a 6 or 7 digit number if i recall correctly.
@jamieyz4 жыл бұрын
@@KevinBaxter 6107328 on the left side. It's a 248. Thanks! Didn't know that number was there. The first one I gave you was from behind the distributor.

GMC 302 engine was produced from '52 to '55 only. in '56 was replaced by truck version of 324 Olds engine. Author does not know his history!
@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
Interesting....i appreciate the comment, but there is much out there in the contrary. While 1960-1962 can be debated (military special use, etc), the 302 was certainly made up until 1959. I can even buy gaskets from ecklers for 51 to 59 model 302, www.ecklerstrucks.com/gmc-truck-engine-gasket-set-302-ci-1951-1959.html or piston rings from 52-59 www.performancenowdirect.com/piston-ring-set-1952-59-gmc-truck-6-cyl-302/ Also found this great article on Jim Carters website from a customer retro fitting a "1959-1962" 302 into his Chevy truck. As a side note...the engine in the video, is the first I have....the second...came out of a 1959 military truck. It has the proper engine code, casting number, head casting number, indicating it as a 1959 302. Where did you find information saying that the 302 was only made until 1955? And why would all these companies list parts up to 1959 if the engine didn't exist during those years? I would love to see data....because A LOT of people would be wrong on this one. Thanks!
@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
Here's the article. From just a quick search anyway. www.oldchevytrucks.com/Articles/GMC-302-Install-in-1950-Chevrolet.php

Oh...one last reference. The following is just one place, after many cross references, GM sources, and Service Manuals, etc (in other words, this isnt the only place this information exists)....That show block casting numbers for the 55-62 as well as no year models listed for military specific use. www.hotrodreference.com/919/gmc-six-cylinder-casting-numbers/
@thomasadams77952 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, your comment indicates you are the one who doesn't know what he's talking about. GMC did, in fact, keep the 302 thru 59. The Olds 324 was a V8, replaced by another Olds sourced engine, the 370 V8. If you have decent vision, you should be able to see that the engine in the video is a 6 cylinder, not a V8.
@e493af2 жыл бұрын
My 1960 GM truck shop manual still has a section for the 302 six cylinder. I also know that the 270 GMC engine was used up to 1962 in GMC TGH3102 city buses.
