Kevin, would it be a better application to attach the temp sensor to the rear head? I think it runs hotter than the front, and might be a better indication of the engine's temp condition. Just curious; thanks for the great video.

I installed the Jims force flow fan on my 2015 street glide special. I live in south Florida in it gets very hot down here. Before I installed the Jims force flow my engine temperature sensor was showing 285 degrees. Since I installed the Jims force flow my cylinder head temperature is at 235 degrees and my oil temperature is at 218 degrees. Love it so far. I am also running a FP3 I had had the tuner installed long before the install of the Jims force flow fan. I am a fan of the Jims force flow fan.

Hi Kevin, really injoy your knowledge and videos. I've always been worried about the direction of the exhausted heat from that style of fan cooling fans. Curious about adding a pair of used Wards Werks fans I pulled off of my 2011 Ultra and adding them to my 2020 Road Glide Limited Twin cooled with the 131 kit I had the shop install. Every once in awhile she'll leak a bit after shutting down. Techs checked the system and rerouted lines, advised H-D. I haven't checked to see if there are open areas in M-8 Twin cooled heads like there are with the Twin Cam so maybe not as much cooling. Might be better to put them on my 2007 Softail but I ride the RG more often. Thanks.

I bought a brand new M8 107 Softail. I’ve put on 3k on it and 4 times now the bike has shut off while stopped at a light. First time it shut off I was under emergency braking and I thought I may has stalled it or hit the kill. The second time I was at a light with a group in gear clutch pressed right hand off. I went to leave and motor off power on. Time after that I came to a stop, threw it into neutral to take a stretch and motor shut off. Than again yesterday same thing, came to a stop, this time I was holding clutch and brake motor shut off power on. Is this signs of something major to come? Should I trade it in for something different or just take it in for warranty?

it very well could depending on your chg system. are you running battery delete with a capacitor to charge the alternator? If you have a healthy charging system, it shouldn't. on my old bike builds...like Stiffy the Bobber Panhead im running an S&S alternator case. With that, a battery delete system from Cycle Electric which is basically a volt reg to a capacitor so i can run lights from that. Also running a morris mag on it.

I had it on my 2018 road king for 3 months during the hot Sacramento summer. The Head temps dropped about 25 degrees but it did nothing for the engine temps. The thermostat was junk and sometimes the fan came on and sometimes it didn't. I filled out the warranty card and still they would not replace the thermostat. Piece of junk. For that kind of money, I could have gotten the Ultra cool oil cooler. I must add that I love all your other videos and I'm ordering a Baker DD7 transmission after seeing black chunks in my tranny fluid from the Junk stock harley transmission with plastic bearing races. 30 grand for a Harley and I've had to replace the stock 107 that failed from the crappy sumping oil pump. Now I need a new transmission.
@KevinBaxter
@KevinBaxter Жыл бұрын
I haven't heard of or experienced that type of issue with the jims fan. 25 degree drop in that condition is quite a bit. the fan only comes on if the surface of the rocker box exceeds 140 degrees if i recall correctly. i would have to ask what and where are you reading engine temps from? if from say a PV, there can be different temps displayed. keeping the head cool and reducing opportunity for valve seat issues is a huge benefit. im also surprised to hear they wouldnt work with you....i dont know details of course it just seems way out of character for the team there. maybe give them another shot?

Good question
@KevinBaxter
@KevinBaxter 2 жыл бұрын
both are great options. i find that the fan has a quicker effect on head temperature which really is a critical aspect. we are trying to protect the valve train really, valve seats, etc. with the Jagg fan coolers i consistently see a 40 degree reduction in oil temp. a fan averages about the same however the head temp specifically stays lower with the fan. so i would say if you typically do long rides and want to reduce overall average engine and oil temp, and see very little traffic, go the oil cooler and fan route. if your bike stays cool while you are riding but you see traffic often and it really heats up then.....go the force flow fan route. it will cool heads immediately when you need it most. or...run both.

Dont know the answers, just thinking to myself. Great vid as always. Just thinking about my old ironhead Im usually texting about.
@KevinBaxter
@KevinBaxter 2 жыл бұрын
the airflow is blocked in that area by the frame to a large degree as well as the tank, nacelle, etc. as these engines have gotten more modern, there is less of an offset front to rear cylinder. carb bikes were a far different story however, this also depends on exhaust, how the bike is tuned, etc. when we tune, we do so to balance temp. another odd thing...with close analysis, on average, a liquid cooled model has a cooler head temp on the rear. also...keep in mind, the factory engine temp sensors have always been on the front head. in any event, I've tested both locations and havent seen a measurable difference in the head temps mounting at either location.

The transmission wears harder lugging all the time in higher gears. I had my 07 96" tuned rich and never touch 6th till 80+ mph. Cruising at 4k on the highway with an exhaust turns heads, but I have no carbon deposits, I'm always in the meat of the powerband to blip around traffic, and there's never a spec on the tranny drain plug magnet. And much less on the primary, IMO. Also, for what it's worth, I'm a dealership technician and my hunch about the lugging comes from looking at cruise drives on a monthly basis.

Great question. The video was shot at 1am after a 16 hour work day. The transporter was to arrive the following day around 3pm to pick up the motorcycle for delivery to our customer in Ohio. I was exhausted so my plan was to install the fuel tank, seat and shoot video of just what you suggest the following morning...however, when I arrived back at the shop at 7am, the transporter was already here waiting and in a hurry. So, we had to get the tank on, go for a quick test ride and load it on the truck. Sometimes the best laid plans change out of our control. Thanks for watching.

I got the love juggs and they work ok . To be honest this unit good also . One thing i mention as the rubber mounts is a great idea as the vibrations on the engine is hard on fan bearing . I have fans and oil coolers on both SS engines and one is a SS 124 the other is a SS 143 both have had work done to them and the fans is a must for me in controlling heat as i keep a check on oil temps . I always suggest cooing fans and i avoid stop and go traffic especially big citys . . I ride two up most times and i found that can also push up the temps a bit on both bikes . If you dont have a temp gauge you may never even know how hot the engine is .

investigate features and benefits. the concept is simple....blow air on the heads. its the features, how it mounts, operates and looks that would help you make the decision.

$600 to $700 for a 12v electric fan? Seriously? I understand it has some nice chrome and metal parts. Wiring harness, mounting brackets, etc. But still we're talking maybe $50 tops in material costs.

Maybe you’ll know, Kevin.. I watch lots of channels.. Gary Cave claims engine tappets are only made in two places in the world, one plan in the US & one plant in China.. but he won’t tell us which ones are US made.. do you know?
@KevinBaxter

Its not at all as simple as that. There are a couple major high volume OE manufacturers I am aware of that utilize overseas manufacturing exclusively. There are 3 companies offering exclusively US made tappets but not all of their production or components may be produced in house...this i dont know for certain. Yes...I do know who these companies are and where some of their components or complete assemblies come from but I am not at liberty to say. JIMS is the only company I am aware of that sources all US raw material and does all manufacturing of their tappets as well as all components in house, and our Skunk Series tappets, in California. I have been there and have seen it for myself. Take a look at the JIMS factory tour video I did quite a while back. There is also a very low volume manufacturer in Canada. That said...there arent very many companies that make everything. Some specialize in components used in the production of other parts. For example....one company may make the roller, another the plunger, another the spring. This is no big deal because if it's a really good product, each of those components can be manuf to the buyers specifications then they assemble the components. Side note....just because you see "US Made" doesnt mean its a quality part. There are very high quality parts that are manuf in whole or part, overseas. I mean...a BigMac is made in the US....but that aint a quality piece of meat in my book. LOL.

@@bullast2046 I will admit they are not inexpensive. However, I have seen the quality control, know for certain whats in them, each and every one undergoes strict inspection and testing, each are hand fitted, centerless ground, and to within .0001 of spec. Cheap aint good and good aint cheap. I'm thrilled JIMS makes them for me and since having them, I have been able to build engines with some of the quietest valvetrains I've ever heard. If they werent the best I could come up with, I wouldn't put my name on them.
