I've browsed through at least a dozen of these LED cube tutorials and I've been so surprised that nobody mentions anything about testing the LEDs first! Such a critical step in my mind. Thank you for not leaving this out, and of course having some beers to lubricate the process is an excellent tip. Well played sir. Well played.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I just uploaded a demo video of my build, very similar to yours in circuitry, but built on a single 20x30cm pcb protoboard. I separated the red, blue, green, and level banks into separate channels so they can all be controlled independently, as well as control each banks output enable separately. Very happy with the results! Now I need to study your code and learn how it works. I like some of your animations and would like to recreate them on mine.

I must say wow, the complexity is one thing but the amount of work and attention to detail is a different level. I started to introduce my 8 year old to electronics as well embedded systems and was looking for a project but decided no RGB and just 4 x 4 x 4. Ohh, I saw the Indian boy 3d cube and if he would have more class should mention that this was inspired by Kevin and used his know how. I remember my Automation teacher at the University saying-If you copied from one person is plagiarism but if you copied from two it's called research. Cheers

First of all, thank you for the "Build" video!!! Great job. The cube looks like an insane amount of work. But, for anything worth having one must pay the price; and the price is always work, patience, love, self-sacrifice--no paper currency, no promises to pay, but the gold of real service. Great job! I'm doing one at the moment, but to save some soldering I'm using a variation of the 595 shift register that's designed to drive LEDs (actually sinks). Means there's no need for transistors, and only 1 resistor per 16 outputs. The single resistor is used to set the output current for all 16 ports. Part number is TLC5925 if anyone else is thinking of doing this!

First: very nice build and video. Thank you very much. If you build the shift registers and the switching transistors on one board, you save a lot of wires. Also, I think I would have used headers for those ribbon cables and put connectors on the cables themselves (wire-to-board). That way you can take it apart and module test it.

Hi, nice work. You can use enameled copper wire, which is used for electric motor-coils. Its insolated, but if you solder it with approx. 350° the insolation is burned while soldering. Easy to use and the cube is secure to electrical shorts if deformed by accidentally kicking the cube while dancing wildly arround it ;-)

ah, nice catch! The transistors invert the signal. I want the mosfets to turn on only when the shift register signal is HIGH. The mosfet needs a LOW signal since they are P channel. This is the reason for the transistors

I commend you for using discrete NPN transistors...and on protoboards. My personal worst wiring "disaster" on this scale was building an audio switching systems for a stereo store in the mid 1990s. It was all done with D flip flops and pushbuttons - no micros. Haha.

yea for sure! I think some people have done LED cubes like this there. Last year, I think it was called the Cuban Core had a really cool LED light set up... was a ring of circles with LEDs in them. Looked like a Donut in the air from a distance. Would display different images and such. It should be someplace here on youtube. Hmm I think I may actually make an 8x8x8 simple LED cube. That looks to be fairly easy.

I have a suggestion for the jig that may help with the wire tensioning. What if you put a screw at either end that you could wrap the wire around, much like a guitar tuning peg. In fact you can buy individual tuning machines that are used in guitars. The advantage to that is they have a hole in them that you can feed the wire into. Then just turn the screw to tension the wire.

I've driven them with 74HC595s directly through a limiting resistor. The current limit is lower but you can put 10 mA on each output fairly safely with the DIP package 595s. technically it's a 70mA max power total but 10mA doesn't burn them out even on full white. Have to pick resistors carefully though, Red runs at 2 volt green and blue at 3 volt. Not as bright as with a proper driver but a lot cheaper and the lag improvement over driving both layer and cathode transistors makes up for it.

I'm currently working on making a set of boards in Eagle that could be used instead of the multiple protoboards. I'm working on laying it out and using headers to plug IDE cables (cheap and readily available). Might make it more user friendly, but still a lot of soldering. I'll make them available when I can be sure my schematic is correct.

Hello from Germany. Nice projects, great videos. I'm planning on building a LED cube myself, just rather not in RGB. Would love to do it, but there's just not enough time. What I wanted to say is... Instead of stripping the wire yourself, you could've bought silver coated copper wire. It's too late now I guess... Keep it up

I'm not gonna bother to read 210 comments so I'm sorry if this has already been posted. There is an easy way to remove the insulation of solid wires. You cut the wire to the desiered length PLUS a few inches. Then you remove the isolation to each end just enough to make the next step. You take two strong pliers and stretch the wire without pulling the insulation 2' is enough in most cases. After that, you can easilly slide the insulation of the wire, just cut away the damaged wire end first.
