@@KevinOutdoors Have you ever done Algonquin, or the lesser known Lady Evelyn Smoothwater? Or are those unnecessarily far for you? I'm assuming home is in the Thunder Bay area for you...
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
@@ravcreed Yes Thunder Bay is home so those places are a bit far. This probably sounds strange if you are in Toronto but Algonquin would be crowded from my perspective. I have visited Algonquin and done some hiking there but it isn't on my to do list for a canoe trip.
@ravcreed
@ravcreed 4 жыл бұрын
Not inaccurate. There are busy "highways" within Algonquin, but due to its size, you can also become a recluse and avoid the masses with the right route planning. On a drive east and south from Thunder Bay, Killarney would probably be a more desirable destination for you. Anyhow, thanks for the banter!

I have to tell you, my friend and I did our first ever backpack on just a part of the Casques Isles trail this summer, and man you make this stuff look easy. Your video of that trail was invaluable in our planning, by the way. It really helped us get a sense of what sections we were up for and which we were not (death valley).

Thanks for sharing Patricia. Yes a lot of folks are intimidated by the solo thing. A friend of the boat shuttle operator traveled out with us. He was young ~30, fit, strong, and tall, a perfect natural hiker. He commented to me that he wouldn't do what I was doing alone. That struck me as funny since he could clearly out hike me. I think the trick to solo is being prepared and starting with short trips. It isn't for everyone but it can be quite rewarding. Good luck!

Great videos! I do have a questions on how the water shuttle is to the end of the trail? I am looking to hike this next summer!
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken, The boat shuttle was great! Doug from North Shore Adventures has a very sturdy boat for the big lake and with a mild chop on the water we made it down to the end in about an hour. I have a link to North Shore Adventures in the description - tell him you saw my video he will get a kick out of it. The shuttle is a flat rate so a bit pricey for a solo guy but the more people in your party the cheaper things get. When I did this trip Doug was thinking of getting a bigger boat and running it like a bus service. Regular stops at regular times along the trail and you buy a ticket for a ride just like a bus. I don't know if he will be doing that next year but he is quite the entrepreneur and I would really like to see that service develop.

@KevinOutdoors

Thanks xxgg! The bugs weren't too bad as it is now August and the peak bug season is over. But, in the morning and evening I did get visited by mosquitos. For this trip I brought a can of Deep Woods Off. I really like the 'dry' formula. And I also brought a small Deep Woods Off clip-on fan. The fan runs on a AA battery and is very light and nice to have when the bugs aren't too bad.

Hey Kevin, just subscribed. I found your channel by searching for dehydrating meals, etc. Thanks for that. May I ask a quick question please? I see you using the walking poles... I see alot of people using them for even very easy walks such as walking around the Swan River in my home of Perth, Western Australia on completely flat, urban paths; in your opinion do they help alot? I saw you balance with them a few times and help you up and down some of the difficult sections in this video (great vid. by the way, a beautiful part of the world). Was just wandering how you find them. Thanks again, really enjoy your vid's - Peter V.
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Great question Peter. While I was hiking I realized I should do a video on the subject. I find them very helpful on a backpacking trip or even for day hiking. As you point out, they are most useful for balance on obstacles and climbing hills as they basically turn you from a biped to a quadruped. When I was younger I thought hiking poles were silly but after injuring my knee I realized they also take a lot of stress off of the leg joints. I won't hike without them now! But I don't bring them on flat walking paths.

@@KevinOutdoors Thanks for the reply Kevin, much appreciated. I'm getting a little older, a little heavier and a little sorer (more sore... increased soreness... is 'sorer' an actual word???) as time goes by. I was wondering about those. Have you tried a single staff or would you stick with the 2 poles? Thanks again - Peter V.
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
@@petervince1742 I have never really tried one staff (although in some of my shots I am only carrying one pole, that is because the other is supporting the camera). I would recommend getting a pair of poles especially if you are going to be doing anything with hills or obstacles.

is it safe to hike alone?
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but 'safe' is a relative concept. If you hike the trail as I did you will be very alone for 2-ish days until you get to Oiseau Bay and see more hikers. Be sure you can deal both mentally and physically with common backcountry situations like adverse weather and bear encounters. Also this trail can be very dangerous if the rocks are wet, you would want to go slow. I hope that helps.
