Propane is heavier than air. It can just sit in the bottom for years. A yardstick and paper plate produces a good arched opening. Been searching for tanks for a month, finally picked up 2 30lb today for free.

Great idea. I'd suggest putting a fire grate in so ashes can fall away from your fire. A nice finish to the opening might be to weld so 1/4" rod along the edge around the opening and fare in with weld/grind. give a nice, smooth edge. overall they seem to have turned out well.

Nice build! One suggestion -- next time you build one of these, I recommend you consider making the collar smaller so the pipe goes outside the collar instead of inside it. That way water would stay outside the pipe and not get trapped between an external collar and the pipe inside it (which would likely cause a rust issue). It would also prevent rain water from leaking inside the pit. Instead it would simply run down the sides. You could fasten the pipe to the inside collar using stove bolts or large self tapping sheet metal screws. One other thought regarding preventing rain incursion -- possibly make a "brim" and weld it above the fire opening -- kind of like a small 1 inch awning so that rain would be deflected and couldn't just drip into the opening. I live in the Pacific NW, so we get a lot of rain during the fall winter and spring, so keeping it out of where it isn't wanted is a big deal here. I watched the other video you did of a later build and like the rebar grill you made to fit inside. That steak you cooked looked delicious! One comment about safety -- I recommend that, after you remove the valve, you "always" fill each tank up completely with water to force any remaining heavier-than-air propane out of the tank before you start cutting and welding. You are probably okay to cut off the guard at the top to help get the valve off first -- but doing any more without making sure the tank has been emptied of propane first is asking for trouble....

Tell me why people work on the floor all uncomfortable. hehe ? One little tip. When you put your sleave for your top pipe. The sleave should be smaller than the top pipe so it will fit over it instead of the sleave going inside the upper pipe. This will ensure any smoke will not leak out. . It will also keep rain water from leaking down inside the fire pit when left outside in the eliments. Great job ,Thanks for the helfull tips. Cheers

Looks great!. Two other things to think about. 1) put a complete bead around the stovepipe collar to make it a little more finished and 2) weld some cleats inside to support a wire rack or two (1 to let the ashes drop and the other to cook on. Over all outstanding and I bet you can find people easily to pay $150-$200 for these.
