Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that I absolutely loved your tutorial on Mastodon. I'm really passionate about computer science, and your video helped me discover this social network in depth. Thank you for guiding me step-by-step through choosing a server, creating an account, and interacting with content. Your content is truly amazing, and I'm looking forward to your next videos!

why is that
@AndrewGeleff Жыл бұрын
@@ianthehunter3532 It's too complex for the average user. Brands will never adapt to it, mainstream politicians will never use it, news outlets will never break news there first.
@4nk11 ай бұрын
@@AndrewGeleff European Union uses it along with Twitter, and iirc there are at least a few companies using Mastodon. And Mastodon has basically the same features as Twitter, plus the connection with Fediverse, a network of different social media networks. Any feature that might be complex for an average user I see presented in this video is just importing list of people followed on Twitter, what isn't necessary, as You may just e.g. request them via Twitter or do nothing about it. Also, if it comes to the variety of options available when editing the profile, You don't have to decide what value each of them has. As for more-than-one feed pages, it's a convenient way to organise the whole feed.

First impressions: Needs dedicated dms, server system is baffling. Following a topic would make more sense. Rolling content feeds look impossible to work with for busy servers.

Not at all, you can change servers any time you want

I remember when one of the benefits of the Internet was to route around censorship. Now, it is popular to consider some content, "toxic," and make efforts to squelch it. I am not afraid of pixels on a screen, and I do not need someone else to protect me from ideas, even from ideas that I disagree with. With Mastodon, it appears that instead of one possible censor, there are thousands of possible censors. I want to use a social network where each individual chooses what they consume. I do not need or want Big Brother or Big Sister manipulating me and choosing what I can experience. (This comment is not to take away from Nelson's tutorial on Mastodon. He did a great job with this video.)

If a mastodon server hosts conservative users will other mastodon servers be allowed to block posts from the entire server?
@skyfaller Жыл бұрын
Nelson here: yes, the technology gives server mods the ability to block other servers for any reason, including being conservative. As for whether they will be allowed to block a conservative server, that depends on the laws in the server's host country: does the law force people listen to and associate with people they would prefer not to? If you want to see posts from certain groups of people, simply move to a server that does not block them; there are many servers which have policies against blocking other servers at all. If you want to force people to listen to you, Mastodon does not provide that functionality.

Partially agree… yes, Mastadon is a bit more complex to understand and get started. After that it has pretty much the same learning curve or something to get used to as all other social media. The onboarding part is where new users could give up… until the big players mess up again and there’s a will or ‘need’ for change.
@catoyzКүн бұрын
Mastodon the name is a turn off. It's the name of an extinct dinosaur, a dead giant elephant no longer in the room. Sick of twitter/X and looking for something big that will grow fast and suck the life out of twitter. I particularly like some kind of cat. (cats kill birds). (Sabre, Leo, Spike, Fang, Sphinx 🐯?) In any case I do like the idea of a decentralized social media alternative to Elon Musk's cesspool and will probably choose Mastodon and hope the name changes in time. Still searching through options.
