The edge of the line your marker created was along the edge of each cutout within the original key. Trimming it so the line just disappears is the correct dimension. Think about if you created a copy from the copy, your key would gradually become less functional if the marker line is visible.

Believe it or not you just inspired me to file cut 2 keys with the marker trick. I ended up tipping the original key with a blank on a flat surface and then taped them together with some cellophane tape. I used the marker to trace the cuts and filed to the line. I'm shocked because the duplicate worked the first time. Beginner's luck. (I did make a second copy with the same technique, and it worked too).

I wound up in a situation of needing some early 60's Ford keys duplicated, but nobody could do it for me in town. I wound up tracing the first few like you did with a pencil and used a mini file set. Triangle/square to mark the location of the cuts. Round file to make the cuts and a flat file to round the ramps and peaks. I've made 5 keys and they've all worked. 3 work perfect, 2 work good and if I messed with them some more they'd work perfect too. So, I guess that method works too lol.

I did a bit of filing to try to correct, then threw away the 2 failed attempts. I am quite sure this takes a bit of trial and error / practice. Glad I bought 50 SC1 blanks.

i wonder how the cuts look. a 1200 is pretty square and smooth on both edges. pak-a-punch and blue punch have one edge of cut square and the other edge like it was stretched and snapped off. theres a minimum amount of material one can remove or the cutter just slides off.

In trying to cut a motorcycle key with the lishi, it's doing my head in.. I can't hold the keys together for a good tracing, as they have molded covers. I feel I may be missing something obvious, but what's the best way to get an accurate template to cut to with the lishi, on a key that requires both edges be symmetrical like a two way motorcycle wafer key?
@clksupplies3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, plastic head is tough-PJ
@AndrewClairTaylor3 жыл бұрын
Stencil on paper and transfer that way maybe? Or even press it in some silly putty and use it as a template or something like that. Or heck, trace original key on paper, cut out the template and tape it to the blank then nip away lol
@breaddrinker3 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewClairTaylor I also figured out how they were held in the plastic base of the key to remove them.. Earlier Ducati keys have a little metal rivet through the key into the plastic, under the little silver D symbol. Once they're out, they can be aligned. I also went a little further and bought a key cutting machine/duplicator. And also.. I think I had purchased a non genuine lishi cutter. The original is actually cheaper and can be found on the lishi official web page, which I didn't know existed when I first bought it. Learning all the time :D Thanks for your help. I think that may be useful on non removable bladed keys.
@AndrewClairTaylor3 жыл бұрын
@@breaddrinker I'm glad you got it sorted out. I had no idea keys could be removed that way, that's something I'll have to look for in the future if I ever come across that issue. I had one other idea as well but didn't suggest it as it would have cost you more. SInce you went and bought the duplicator machine, I guess cost wouldn't have been important lol. I was going to suggest if the paper method didn't work to use a hacksaw and just hack the head off the key, then buy 2 blanks to transfer to. That way you'll at least always have a metal template in a drawer somewhere but still have two keys haha Happy it all worked out though and thanks for the follow up!
@breaddrinker3 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewClairTaylor Thanks man. I really appreciate you taking the time.. The cutting the key off isn't a bad idea as far as things go.. If you can align them, metal to metal, you're pretty much guaranteed a good copy. I kept kind of upgrading myself to the next step.. The duplicator is an antique, and was barely more expensive than the Lishi on craigslist. Foley Belsaw 200 if you're interested. They were a bundle in a key cutting course.. They still have the course actually, but there's a lot of these old machines around with barely any use on them.
