How to change or replace the key fob battery on a Toyota

Hello i just purchased the 2011 V6 from a coworker and I've noticed if I leave the fob in the car and it's chilly at all outside when I come back to start the car it won't read the key. It just happened. I took it in the house and held it near the heater for a minute and it worked fine when I tried again. Is this a common problem? A sign of a faulty key? Or does the battery need to be replaced? And the little key that slides out of the fob, what is that for? Can you start the car using it if the fob isn't working? Thank you
