I suspect that after gigging as a professional musician for 3 decades, backing up some of the biggest names in the business David has experienced what it is like when it all goes wrong. In fact, I seem to recall a very old issue of Keyboard Magazine about worst gig experiences where David contributed some stories. I see nothing wrong with making sure it all works.

A hollowed out piano? WTF? I guess playing in tune IS important!

+Michael Undas Does (besides Tori Amos) use a real piano on stage anymore? I doubt it. Today they are almost always either hollowed out with a digital keyboard inside or (like Roy Bittan's) simply act as MIDI controllers for a plug-in on a laptop or Receptor. This is nothing new BTW.

Today, Billy Joel often plays his songs in lower keys, so he can still amazingly sing to it. If you want so see what happens if a great singer gets old and still tries to sing everything in original key, listen to Paul McCartney and his performances of "Maybe I'm Amazed" from the last years... Now listen to Billy's cover from 2014, and you'll be glad that he uses a Midi Keyboard you can easily tune down.
