Rattling Stabilizer - Is GREASE the ONLY fix? Try this instead! Epsi, Holee, Band-aid Wrap!

Welcome to Keybored! Today, we're going to fix a Rattling Stabilizer! We're not going to load it up with Grease, but using an alternative method such as the Epsi, Holee and even the Band-Aid Wrap mod!
NOTE: I ended up taking down the original and uploading a new version! I stated that Holee mod was similar to the Epsi and just skipped over the tutorial... but they really aren't the same... so I added in footage for the Holee to do it justice! Also, added in the credits to the originators in the video itself :)
Over the course to time, the one keyboard mod that was always a pain to me was getting the stabilizer done correctly. Once done correct, it was a thing of beauty, but when not, it was a rattling mess.
Typically, us in the keyboard world take bunch of Krytox or Permatex dielectric grease, and load up the stem insides to prevent the stem from rattling inside it. This might work for a while, but requires regular maintenance to have it function right, and more often times than not, end up with a sticky, messy goop on your keyboard.
So, try something different, and actually better!
Full disclaimer, I am not the originator of these mods. See below for credits to the originators!

For holee mod, to make it a little less painful, stick one end of the tweezer through the stem and then apply the bandaid to it. It’s easier to pull it through the stem rather than pushing it through.

Scott, great video. This video was the introduction for me to your channel and I love the content you have and so I have subscribed. If I may have a request, I would love to know more about the different mounting styles of keyboards. Thanks for your awesome work - keep it up!!!
@Keybored
@Keybored 3 жыл бұрын
Thabk you so much for the sub Kyle! I really appreciate it! In terms of the mounting styles, I'll look into what I can do! I may have most styles to leverage, but probably missing a few less utilized and more rare mounting types. Lately, it seems like most keyboard manufacturers are going with gasket mount. That tends to provide a more dampened typing experience and sound. However, most styles can feel and sound really nice, given the right type of mod for that mount style. For example, tray mount keyboards are considered "entry" but if you saw my tofu65 video, I with thr o-ring mount mod, it turns out phenomenal. :)

For the 4:15 epsi mod, if you do this without dielectric grease, the foam will wear down and the tape that is left will start making a squeaking noise. The wear down time is also very short considering it started squeaking in about a day

I have tried the Epsi mod now on some leftover durock stabs, and it works super good! One IMPORTANT thing is that the 2.5 mm pad can't be sticking out of the stab. If it does it is going to interfere with the stab and make a bad bump.

One other method I've found to work is if you wrap the band aid cutout to the wire itself if you don't have translucent stab housings, or you lubed the housing beforehand and the band aid won't stick, even after cleaning. The only thing you gotta watch out for is when you insert the wire back to the housing is to slide it gently so as to avoid peeling off the band aid off of the wire. Also, don't overdo it with the lubing since this could strip the band aid as well. If you put small or moderate amount of it on the wire, the band aid won't fall off and it will dampen the sound and ease the rattle. Furthermore, make sure that you don't put too much of the band aid as it may become too thick, so the amount has to be enough to cover the wire a single time, no more, no less if you don't want to impede the movement of the stabilizer.

One mod I've found that works wonders is applying micropore tan surgical tape on the ends of the stabilizer, like the band-aid mod here. All I do is apply a thin sheet of it, so it only covers the top of the bar. It has the perfect thickness for all of the stabs I've used. Alternatively, you could wrap the entire end - that was overkill for me, it made the stabs sluggish

Did a Holee mod on the stock stabs of my Akko 3068, but I used duct tape instead since that is what I have available. It is a way better method than overlubing the stem slots. You don't have to trial and error with the amount of lube to eliminate rattle. It just works!

With my keyboard, I just used a drop of thick silicone shock oil that are commonly used on action figure joints, didn't have to do any hacks, no bandaids, etc. It made it completely silent, with zero rattle, and it only took like 5 seconds to drop and clean it. Silicone shock oil is commonly used for action figures for the squeking and overly tight joints, and because it is thick and isn't messy, it stays in place and the more friction it had, the more effective it becomes.

Another great video. Thanks for the help and ideas on different ways to achieve better sounding and feeling stabs. I know you mentioned using a waterproof bandaid for the holee mod. Do you have any idea on the longevity of the holee mod, as opposed to just using a lube or grease? Either way, great video and cheers!
@Keybored
@Keybored 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher! I think the only worry with the holee or the epsi mod is the potential longevity of the mods. I know that epsi mod calls for no lube at all, but I feel that this makes the overall feel a bit stiff, and a tiny bit of the 205G0 did really help the movement. As long as we don't go overboard with the grease, I hope it helps to keep the adhesive intact! My feeling is that the bar end wrap with the right thickness may end up having the best long term reliability.

It's possible to improve even more in the Epsi one : you cut the whole strip from the leftover black pad, but you could leave it attached to the bigger piece and just cut slits and then only remove the black pads from them. That way you don't even have to bother with removing the 3M film from 1-2mm small pieces, you would just take the black bits, they would be the exact same size you made them here, but easier to detach grab.. faster job cleaner job ! btw I'm not really into keyboards, but this peaks my interest, made me realize my space bar is rattling (I use a cooler master mk750). if anyone have advices on how I could make it feel better, I'm all listening haha. Have a nice day
@Keybored
@Keybored 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great advice DancinStyles! If your cooler master is soldered switch type, then without desoldering the entire thing, the easiest way to fix that rattle is by grabbing some dielectric grease, and shoving some into the stabilizer stem hole :)

Meticulous work, thanks for your help. Apart from lubing, I applied the band aid wrap using simple scotch tape in Costar stabs which are stubborn like ticking forever and the results are promising. I wonder why such mods are not pre applied by manufacturers or vendors. It would save a lot of time for end users while it's much easier for them in a lab equipped with tools than for home users. To be honest, the stabs' wires should be sold coated with silicone, tape or similar. That would be an important step forward.

For the holee mod with me, once I did it all my 2u stab keys sounded amazing, but instead of tick at the end due to unbalanced wires, the left side was fine and the right had a bit of rattle becasue of the unbalanced wires. For anyone still looking on this video, if you want a truley crisp sound then you would still have to wire balance. (I didnt because I suck at wire balancing)

I modded my stabs for like 3 hours today, used multiple types even and my God. It just didn't stop with all the rattling. I even had to heat up my spacebar and straighten it a little more in the end. I am definitely done with custom keebs for a while now. It is absolutely painful every single time. I don't even get how some people online talk about keyboard modding as if it's some zen-like therapeutic thing to do. It drives me absolutely crazy every single time.

Your content is incredible. It's nice to watch a video and not squint when looking at small intricate parts through my monitor. Your production is great! Now, my $0.02. I've never understood all of these crazy stab mods. I've always built with Durock V1/V2 and use strictly 205g0 and have never had rattle. On occasion, I'll use a syringe and inject some in trouble areas, but that's it. Any type of band aid mod always gives me a mushy feel. And holee modding leaves me wondering if there's going to be issues down the road. This Epsi mod is especially concerning due to the fact that grease will eventually get on or near that double sided tape, thus potentially causing it to shift and 'gunk' up the stab stems. I guess we'll see what happens in the coming months/years and see if these mods hold up. Just something that I've never really understood. Anyway, keep up the good work!

:) Thank you so much Phil! Yeah, with these new mods, longevity will be the big question. I guess time will tell!
@Liza.Wharton
@Liza.Wharton 3 жыл бұрын
I think the issue with these methods is longevity. The metal bar is constantly in contact with the band-aid/fabric. Which means friction, fraying resulting in a hole. The fabric pads are very, very thin and aren't gonna last very long compared to lube, which you can just apply them when it dries out.
@Keybored
