Never expected the Q8 to actually look & feel premium at its price point of around USD200 completed with switches & keycaps. The Q8 stock is pretty decent but there were obvious case ping & hollowness. Spend a little time to mod it & you should be pretty pleased at the end result. The value here is obvious. A great addition to any keyboard enthusiast's collection especially if you are lacking an Alice/Arisu style board & would want to try one that's not cheap plastic before committing to a high end Alice.
All sound tests are recorded using a Shure MV7 dynamic microphone positioned 6 inches above keyboard. No sound editing or EQ was done.

I’ll be largely doing what you did with mine but I’m going to put a silicone sheet in the base and tape mod the PCB on top of their factory fit tape mod. Also I’ll be using Duroc v2 stabilisers for good measure. Really nice build btw, fantastic video.

Thanks for watching! Some dampener will be great to reduce case hollowness but I don't think it makes a difference taping over the stock tape mod. In fact I found the stock one didn't sound good, I suspect due to it being firm it doesn't conform snugly to the PCB causing sound to "leak" if you get what I mean. I suggest u can try regular tape mod in place of the stock "tape" piece & let me know how it goes?

keychron is insane recently , most of the enthusiast moddi they would do it , maybe few years later we won't even need to mod the keyboard anymore lol

I couldn't make this board sound more full or deeper. Tried holee mod, tape mod, PE foam, PE foam + 4mm foam to have the same cut out as the plate. It doesn't sound bad TBH but sounds like you are frying fish when typing. I think best move for this is to just get the PC plate + lubed stabs. That said, I purchased from Keychron site as well and didn't see the PC plate option initially as there was no convenient link for it. Wil be putting silent switches on it now. Maybe later if I fancy another purchase from keychron I would get the PC plate for it.

Did u at least manage to resolve the case ping/hollowness problem? With that out of the way, u get to hear more of the switches at least, so with a fuller sounding switch u might get to what u are looking for?

I can't believe keychron didn't include any case foam or pcb foam. It's more expensive than other q series boards already ..at least include them for people who want to see it. Unbelievable.

yeah i remember seeing their page before launch it would include case and plate foam but then it got omitted once the q8 was launched

After experimenting with different configs, I can conclude that the Q8 definitely requires foam or some sort of dampening to help remove the audible hollowness. It is indeed an oversight for Keychron to omit case foams that are so low cost yet greatly improves the user experience.

@@studio20creations if you have time, I've seen 3 simple mods on KZfaq that you can try on the q8. Force break mod (reduce case ping), PE foam , and tape mod under pcb. I just received my blue Q8 about 5 min ago, so I will give those a try. I also got the fr4 plate for a softer feel (PC plate wasn't available from our local vendor)

yea i did the force break and PE foam in my video. Didn't like the sound with the tape mod + PE foam so I had the stock tape removed in this video. You can take a listen again to the sound test at the end. Unfortunately I wasn't able to purchase any other plates at launch so I only had the stock steel plate. Do let me know how the FR4 performs!

@@studio20creations I put some polyfill at the bottom, use fr4 plate, sounds not bad (will go back and mod the stabilizers and put my own blue painters tape because I don't like the stiff stick tape) I further improve the sound. I also added some uhmw tape to the Mac/win metal switch so it fits more snugly and slide smoother. Found mine to be slightly loose and rattly stock.

The stock steel plate most keychrons come with with ruins the potential sound and feel of the entire product. It's well worth ordering their replacement PC or Alu plates.

disagree. I like the lower pitched muted sound of the steel plate. (I own many keyboards ranging from 100-800$)

Gotta be honest, the stock and the modded sound almost identical to one another. If you click back and forth between the both you can hear that they’re very similar. I say that because I’m having the same issue with my Q8. Modding it like I do with my other boards leaves it sounding hollow and super loud.

Thanks for watching! I too feel the sound profile of the Q8 is more or less there. The steel plate imo shapes the sound in a certain way. Perhaps we should try other plate materials to see what new improvements can be made.

I do not like sound of spacebars. I tried to swap and mod everything except new stabs, which I do not have. And it's their problem, going to buy something else soon.

Have you tried wire balancing the stock stabs? I find they are still decent with balancing done & after relubing.

Have to agree that there should be at least an option for a different plate material. And also include some case & plate foam to help combat hollowness, whether or not the customer chooses to use them.

Thanks for watching! Suppose that it's all preferential. Stock stabs were rattly and keyboard was hollow & pingy but yes I agree most people will be happy with how the stock prebuilt feels and sounds as the OSA keycaps make it sound thocky :)

Hi, the stock keyboard came with OSA profile pbt keycaps. I had them replaced with GMK Katakana; cherry profile ABS keycaps.

Stock was hollow sounding. But yea i get where u are coming from, perhaps u prefer the lower pitched kinda sound :)

@@studio20creations I also agreed the stock sounded better I think it's because of the removal of the tape mod and abs keycaps making the whole board sounding thin, maybe it's the pe foam

i dont understand how the foam works, the pins of the switches can go through ?

Switch pins will pierce through PE foam as you are inserting the switches. To make the process easier you might want to pierce through the center pin hole with a tweezer first

@@studio20creations and there wasnt any problem ? I heard in a video that sometimes the keys doesnt work and often the pins are the problems sorry bad english haha

They will work as long as all switches are inserted fully. Hope this helps :)

ABS keycaps are a terrible idea. The stock keycaps are really good and sound amazing. You kinda modded it to sound better then undid all of it by using those keycaps.

Thanks for the comment! I agree that the stock pbt sounds pretty good on the Q8 as it is in its nature a deeper sound board to begin with :)
