Aight, I shoulda made it more clear lol. It is definitely not for everyone. Just like other things, when you get to the high end, it doesn't make sense to an outsider. If it's crazy, then you're probably not the target market. Gonna sound mad elitist right now, but you can't really appreciate it's features, what it has in it's design, quality, and what it is, until you've experienced more in keyboards. (coming from me, who also loves and covers budget boards) sorry for big elitist 🙌

My only issue is value wise it can't possibly be twice as good as a $450 keyboard can it? Because a $450 one would already be somewhat premium in build quality and features, no? I appreciate that for enthusiasts, prices of products can get pretty high and that's fair, but usually you can see exactly why, say a $5,000 pc is so much better than a $1,000 one. With this it seems like diminishing returns for all the extra cash, even though I do admit it's a very impressive keyboard.
@VivaLaRazsa
@VivaLaRazsa 4 жыл бұрын
@@jfmgunner If you go by diminishing returns a $10 rubberdome would probably wipe the floor with any custom because performance would be almost equal while only costing a small fraction of the price.

What you say makes sense and I completely understand your point of view. You don't sound elitist at all and certainly you don't need to apologise for getting it lol. This is just a matter which depends on someone's budget. You may pay a lot to get the best; price doesn't necessarily need to reflect the actual value of the product, but also the niche of the market and the 'premium' of owning one. However, in my opinion these are absurdly priced and my reasoning is the following. We are not talking about some product that features some arcane proprietary technology the manufacturer develops which you pay a premium for (e.g. a high-end Hi-Fi component or PC part). The 'high end' thus in this matter simply refers to better quality of parts and their machining (metal plates, aluminium casing, switches etc.), rather than a clever combination of parts or a proprietary technology. We are talking about a product that has 0 patents or patentable technology. It does not require significant investment from the manufacturer in expensive or unique tooling and the materials are easy to work with and dirt cheap (brass? aluminium?). It also does not involve lengthy manufacturing procedures which skyrocket the cost (e.g. ageing of edibles, or multiple layers of nitrocellulose on musical instruments, fine craftsmanship on watches etc). As such I think a keyboard at that price range is way overpriced, especially given how unreliable modern mechanical keyboards are. Good job on putting it together, looks great and I do hope you enjoy it. I have made a similar project on my own out of a WASD keyboard, and one piece of advice I have given the weight of this thing is try it with doubleshot SA profile keycaps as I think it will sound sick.

IKBC MF108 can sound very similar because the pcb/plate isnt screwed in but sandwiched at the corners. I used some foam to fill and sandwiched some of the foam aswell between chassis and Plate and it sounds like one solid piece. It obviously comes with some draw backs like no programmability and no Media keys... but full size 2,5kg aluminium board for 160$ is very good.

I know that most mechanical keyboard enthusiasts really like that minimalist aesthetic, but sometimes it goes further than I can comprehend. This keyboard case is so expensive but from the top, front and sides it doesn't look much different from most basic anodized aluminum cases you can get for $70, in fact some of those have designs that are more interesting to me. They spent all the time to design things like that really cool cutout to show the Keycult logo on the PCB only to completely hide it with the top part of the case. The brass is one of the defining aspects of this case but its only visible from the back or bottom where nobody is going to see it.

What I don't understand is why they would not solder the keys in for you or couldn't they have provided a solder-less design? I figure the manufacturer is probably better equipped to make precise solder joints for the PCB. A question comes to mind. The frame seems to add rigidity to the keyboard. Is that a desirable trait? It seems like adding the sprung keymounts is counterproductive. Or is it that we have learned typing on keyboards which lack rigidity and consider that the standard for tactile feedback? Are today's switches essentially tuned for the inherent give which flimsy keyboards possess?

So the kit is 900 but it includes only the body and the pcb? What about it is endgame worthy? The PCB? Does it have amazing features that others do not have? Or is it just the design of the case? I do not get it.

Stainless steel is very expensive. That's it. Other versions of this exact case using other materials like aluminum for the bottom piece are half the price. The fact that only 55 are made every half year or so drives up the price too. It's just one guy commissioning a factory to make his design. It's not like a big company that owns factories pushing out millions of keyboards. $500-600 is a fairly normal price for what's considered a high-end custom. There's nothing special about the pcb it's all about the quality and design of the case. Full aluminum gasket mount custom cases are the new hot trend in high-end keyboards.
