Brockwood Park 1979 - Question #4 from Question and Answer Meeting #1
'Emotions are strong. Attachments are strong. How does looking and seeing reduce the strength and power of these emotions?'
This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

Emotions and attachments ARE YOU, they aren’t separate from you. They are the “me”. When you realize that you are this attachment or you are this emotion, there is simply observation. And in this clear, conscious observation (without fear of loss of identity for lack of attachment/emotion), with no energy wasted, the attachment or emotion begins to dissolve. “Test it, do it, and you will find out!”

I have another angle at seeing this. When you see that you are this attachment, or this emotion, observation still happens, but it is the false-self that observes, the self that is emotionally attached. Meaning to say, if this is what happens to a person, that person is still spiritually blind. He has not yet realized his true-self, his true identity, or his essential nature. It is the real self alone that is capable of observing without emotional attachments, because there is no me in there to do the observing, or no observer there that is easily attached emotionally. If there is no me, or no you in there, who will be attached? Therefore, there is only observation, and in that, one is aligned to reality.

If observer is observed it cannot be you. I made the mistake of believing myself to be awareness of perceiving. When I looked for who i was I could throw everything away but awareness. When I found a more subtle beingness than that thru grace and clear understanding it changed everything and I experienced it as a shift in being. Although i intellectually knew I was not the body/mind ego structure I could not realize in experience that I was awareness alone. However when looking even closer I saw that awareness is functioning. Who or what is giving this power to awareness? Life Itself is that which animates awareness. I will not say I am the life power that is the animating power of being but I am in a way that light of life. However this life giving light is aware, it is life that is awarness self-animating thru its nature. This is still in duality however. When we have life we have something. Life is a thing, no matter how subtle, it is known to exist, it has existence. That life would be a masculine nature for it is penetrating and giving. Void would be the opposite of life, the lack of thingness. No subject, no object; void. These two combined create the reality experienced now. Only ever now for time is a concept, a thought. Movement doesn't exist. Stillness percieved to be in different locations moment to moment is called movement. There is only one moment, now. To have movement requires at least one more moment. This cannot be, the reality of one moment existing now is absolute. Therefore it is memory which becomes seen as movement. 2 nows: in one the form was here and in the other the form was there. So one is the stillness of the current moment and the other is the stillness remembered to be in a previous moment. However that moment stored in memory is only a thought. It cannot have reality because the reality has become that changed places but didn't actually because what is seen now is all that exists and so it never moved. Movement is the nature of life. Life moves into.a body and out of a body. No. Life is the vibration in void. Vibration is up and down. There can only be one not two. So if we split up and down we get middle or static stillness in void. Nothing ever happened is still not the entire truth that I thought it was. I can see that life had to be injected into the Void, something such as life cannot come from nowhere. The transcendent One or Logos or God or Brahman or Absolute or Self is the Godhead that conceived void and life by becoming 2, all.and none. This is reality now in my understanding

You said: "I could throw everything away but awareness." What happens to this "awareness" when you are in deep (unconscious) sleep? What then happens to you when you sleep?
@advaitamaunitva5363
@advaitamaunitva5363 5 жыл бұрын
@@Krishnaeternal in deep sleep there are no objects, therefore there is no body/mind, and there is no sense of time. Awareness is there but consciousness is not. Consciousness is intelligence, a sort of mind. Awareness sees while consciousness knows. Without an "other" to be percieved, there is no self to know in relation to or universe either. Awareness is aware of timeless nothingness in deep sleep. In dreams the mind or consciousness is still somewhat active and so we have a body/mind and universe. It's just that in dreams the laws of physics don't apply as they do here. Time sort of exists in the dream state also. In deep sleep time is irrelevant. You fall asleep and then ur waking up. That is because u are conscious of time in waking but because there is no "other" in deep sleep there is no time. Time is relative to another thing changing /moving. Without any "things " there is no time.
@advaitamaunitva5363
@advaitamaunitva5363 5 жыл бұрын
@@Krishnaeternal mind creates the thought I Am, this is the first thought that precludes all thoughts even when unconsciously thought we assume that we are. I am is a consequence of consciousness becoming self-conscious. It thinks therefore it is. As soon as the I am was thought, the body and all of "creation" appeared with It. It wasn't created, it is an appearance within consciousness.
@advaitamaunitva5363
@advaitamaunitva5363 5 жыл бұрын
@@Krishnaeternalan insight I had about movement recently was really pretty cool. Movement doesn't exist! Think of this. There is only the present moment, always, and so past and future don't actually exist. No one ever experienced a past or a future. Even in time travel these places could only be experienced in the state of now. So having only this singular moment something cannot said to move, it is only stillness. Like a flash photograph. Movement is the perception of two nows. One where the thing was in one state of stillness and another where it has seemingly moved to another stillness. Since 2 nows can't possibly exist, one is this moment and the other now is from memory. So movement is seeing stillness now while remembering the object to have been in another place, position. Reality is far more strange than as taken by most. I could expound upon so many things that make reality unreal and yet seemingly real. There are many such occurrences which when truly looked at, aren't as they seem. I can explain karma and how even it isn't real. We make it real by identifying with the doer of action and so we accrue the karma of our doings. If we place our identity ad the seer and knower we are not binding any karma anymore and become liberated from the cycle of rebirth

The Man of Absolute Awareness
@dalegriffiths3628
@dalegriffiths3628 5 жыл бұрын
One of the most profound things I’ve ever heard. Possibly my favourite video piece from this great man. Needs to be listened to a few times to get the full implications of it. For me this crystallises the observer is the observed concept. Normally we are guilty of the little me observing our thoughts and making judgements on them, believing these thoughts are separate from us but no they are us. So observing the little me and our thoughts in their entirety is the pure observation JK talks about. This also then leads to choiceless awareness; without this apparent duality between the observer and the observed, the little me and the thoughts that the little me feels separate to there is no need to have this internal dialogue or the feeling that something needs to be changed, because it just is.

But when you're in that state of observation, without any attachments or emotions, of course there's no grief, anxiety, sadness, yet there's also no joy, no happiness, no contentment. It now brings up the question wether you want that, wether you want to experience nothing at all except the observation. I wish he was still alive so i could ask him about that, as that is my main problem about it.

You take for granted that by observing, you let go of negativity, but also those good things, like joy, pleasure... But all this is what forms the illusion of perception. Since what we are talking about is unknown, it is scary. But he is speaking of the liberation of the mind, of a clear mind without conditioning, thus free. One can only have an understanding of this by practicing the observation of every thought, without identifying with them. This is something that goes against what we usually do, so little by little.

Dont come to the conclusion, see thats happening in you as fact. We have habit to come to conclusion that 'yes, correct, i understand it' but you only understand it intellectually.

When we are not thinking/verbalising then there is actually nothing to observe except observation.. but that doesn't end the emotions there..the moment the emotions/feelings are back we verbalize/think again..

I wholeheartedly believe "K" was generations ahead of his time in his understanding of human behavior and what makes us tick. Among the many questions I am left with after repeatedly listening to innumerous hours of his many videos over the years, the one that puzzles me the most is: If there was an actual transformation in the global society and every human being acquired his understanding and vision, what would happen to procreation? What would be the spark to make people copulate, given there would be no desire, no lust, no longing to perpetuate oneself, no animal urge to maintain the species alive, etc.. Could it be that such generation would be the last generation of mankind? Any thoughts would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Observation doesn't necessarily mean an en end to an action concomitant to the emotion in question. Observe the lust, love or whatever that is demanded of the situation. It becomes a situational response and not a reaction to one's baggage. The decision to act will be a function of the present. That invariably will be the right action in such an unadulterated witnessing.

Ron Carvalho this can never be happened because duality is the base of this universe we are living in if there are enlighten ones then sleeping ones will always be there. and there are higher dimensions where entities have pure consciousness and they still exist so no there will never be an end to this. we came from the same source means same level of consciousness so our very existence is the proof that even we all realise god this samsara will continue because we all have that God consciousness and we still choose to create ourselves in different forms. God or divine creative Pulsation is ever expanding. never born never die.

Ron Carvalho - you say "(...)what would happen to procreation? What would be the spark to make people copulate, given there would be no desire, no lust, no longing to perpetuate oneself, no animal urge to maintain the species alive, etc.. Could it be that such generation would be the last generation of mankind?(...)" - - - concerning your question here, perhaps Sri Aurobindo has answer? Certainly in my reply here, I do 'not' mean any competition nor division nor comparison etc. whatsoever!!!!! *

The moment you started thinking in terms of change that would take place in the future you missed the active observation that spring forth like a fountain and the very vitality of it and rather submerged yourself with fear, rejection, or acceptance, condemn, belief etc. to dwell there forever.
