Wow, I was born in Estonia and I had NO idea that that was why the Viru hotel was originally built. Freaky but cool to know.

Hotel Viru had a very interesting story. It was built by Finnish workers, the official cause was "to give the unemployed Finnish worker a living". The local population of Tallinn (stress is on the L first syllable)was also very interestingly involved with manning it. Working at the hotel was a special privilege, being a worker got you access to unique goods like the food being served there. You couldn't get these in a store, many times you couldn't even get groceries at a store. Though that was not a problem at the accompanying "valuta store", where the guests came to shop. This was off limits to citizens. The guests were well aware of the fact that they were spied upon. There are even stories of people ordering toilet paper via the microphones - banging on about there not being any toilet paper at the restroom, until a servant was behind the door. This surveillance was also conducted on the workers. At the top of the hotel was a secret floor used for communication with spies in Finland. Guests did notice the "secret" floor clearly visible on the outside and asked about it. The official answer was that "seeing things from that high up would bee too great of a security risk for the Soviet Union".

KGB was one of the most effective secret police in history. I think another group should be the East German Stasi. From what I know it may have been even more effective than the KGB was when resolving conflict. But I like having a video on the KGB since they were a major player in the Soviet Union, and if their coup didn't fail could still kept it around.

(I've used your videos to explain stuff to friends and family members over the years. TY!! lol) Once in a while, though, you throw out a little tidbit of information that totally blows me away. Those are my favorite episodes :D PDFs don't seem to translate in google, least they don't for me. A lot of the information from website archives like the one you mentioned and other foreign intelligence agencies past and present are presented in PDF format (CIA and FBI does the same thing on their sites). If anyone knows of a software that can translate PDFs to English please post a link below my comment, I'd really appreciate it! Or of there's a way to set google or firefox to translate the PDF when it opens please let me know I've not found that setting anywhere.
