Please do a video about starting a salt water tank on a budget! Y’all have been my favorite KZfaqrs since I started my fist aquarium a few years ago because of how y’all focus on making things easy to understand for beginners and welcoming more people into the hobby. I would love to start a saltwater tank but have just been too intimidated by them. 🐠

Large tank size, quarantined fish, titanium heater with a backup, quality return pump, and regularly monitored auto top off, mixed with lots of research and it's doable. Don't completely cheap out though. It makes the hobby exponentially more difficult and frustrating. Often at the peril of the tanks inhabitants.

Yes, we're interested on a saltwater tank on a budget! By now, I'm very busy, but I'd like to take up the challenge once things will have settled down. I don't even think it's the colours to make me drawn to it (freshwater still has a ton of it), it's the new challenge to be accepted. Back to freshwater, here on the other side of the pond (I'm from Italy) planted tanks are the default setting since practically ever. Fact is, bulk of the biomass in most enviroments are plants, and their function is paramount - Thus, not putting them in an aquarium is unheard of. Fish also really appreciate them, they clearly are more at ease with a lot of vegetation to explore and hide within.

Did you have long term success with the cheap tanks? I personally haven't really seen budget tanks being successful long term. Pump, heater, ato failure while you're not home can easily be death
@joestephens1506
@joestephens1506 Жыл бұрын
@Racing&Beats I started saltwater tanks before ato's or any of the modern gadgets were put there. And yes I had plenty of success. I set up reefs with true live rock and everything in the tank had a job. A true reef is a ecosystem and if you do water changes provide circulation and lighting you need little else.

absolutely do a saltwater tank on a budget!!! My biggest fear about salt water tanks is honestly always been the cost if something happens and they die. Salt water fish are typically a lot more expensive then fresh water ... and everything for them has always seemed so much more complicated. salinity, sumps, protein skimmers.. The cost of entry into salt water always seemed just too high for something I could easily screw up and kill .
@racingbeats1493
@racingbeats1493 Жыл бұрын
I would agree. You can avoid catastrophic failure by spending weeks/ months learning. I had one saltwater fish death from disease and now quarantine everything. It's something you can't really ignore at busy times of your life either like many planted freshwater tanks. But hey if you have some cash sitting around and you're confident do it, just don't try to do it really cheap.
@thatstonerr7738
@thatstonerr7738 Жыл бұрын
You don’t need a sump they are particularly only important for large saltwater systems like 125gal and above anything under that you could run a simple canister filter like a fx4 or fx6 and run a skimmer that is slightly rated above your tank size and your good to go just don’t add anemones unless the tank is like 2 months old or they will just die atleast in my experience
@racingbeats1493
@racingbeats1493 Жыл бұрын
@@thatstonerr7738 I would disagre with this. Generally with saltwater tanks the main benfit of a sump is water volume. With really small water volumes the tank experices very drastic changes with literally everything. Temps, nutients, elements, salinity, alk, ect. This is obviously really bad for a reef enviornment and its even bad for a fish only environments. Generally a newcomer would really struggle with a small tank. A 40 gal tank with a 40 gal sump is going to be a lot more stable than just a 40 with a canister filter. I would argue that a sump also makes the tank look substantially better.
@thatstonerr7738
@thatstonerr7738 Жыл бұрын
@@racingbeats1493 it’s subjective to the bio media of choice that’s being used some more effective then others I personally have a 40g breeder that has nems and a pair of clownfish in it granted that is a low bio load regardless with just my fx4 a small HOB a 110 gallon skimmer with half an undergravel filter in there and I maintain almost perfect parameters so again it depends on how you chose to setup the system 🤷‍♀️

You and Lisa have a friend with me, John! I had the same type of father. He didn't know how much my fish meant to me, and pulled the plug on my guppy tank filter in the night because they were "disturbing his sleep." I woke up to a tank of dead fish. He was a cat lover, so we had many cats; fish and plants were not his thing. My mother was very understanding and scooped out the dead fish. We had a few survive, so we just tried to quiet the filter.

For me it’s 100% the systems, technology, and automation that is very alluring about marine keeping. I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from watching BRS and applied as much as I can to my planted tank, using dosing pumps, reactors, and even an ATO. One day I’ll go salty!

Same. I started before you, but I took a fairly long break from high school to buying ny own house after getting married. My reintroduction started around the same time as yours, 92/93. It wasnt until the early 2000 though that I ever shared this hobby with someone other than me. Mrs Whip couldn't give rip about aquariums or fish. None of my friends had aquariums. There was no internet that I could access and there have never been clubs within an easy drive. All I knew was what I had learned by trial and error. Now I know people all across the nation, hell, I know people all over the world now. People who have the dame interest as me. Plus, I have access to information anytime I want, that I never had access to before. I still keep my circle of friends pretty small. The act of aquiring the most friends for the sake of sating, "look how popular I am", has never been my thing. Having people I'd go to war with is.

Great video John! We met at the Aquatic Experience in Jersey two years in a row and we talked at length about....baseball.. You, Jason and I - doubt you'd remember but the fact we talked so much baseball maybe you do recall. I'm a Yankee fan and you are a Nats fan first - and Yankees second (how's that working out). All my tanks - 9 at my zenith, and now down to three - taking a page from this video - planning to convert one of my tanks to a planted tank. Will do this over the summer. But what really caught my ear was you being into scale modelling. LOL! Another hobby I enjoyed over 40 years ago and getting back into it. I purchased all the tools and paints imaginable and have a pretty large stash of unbuilt models - mostly from late 70s early 80s. The technology used today in the scale modelling space blows my mind. As soon as the planted tank is setup - gonna build my first diorama. Looking forward to that. If Aquatic Experience does return I plan to go - and if you are there - we'd talk about scale modelling. Thanks for all the great content over the years! Will continue following your vids.

It's funny because I don't usually like the mens men (or lads/blokes is we call him now in the UK where I live) but I see myself in the middle. I have a man bun, I also like gaming and anime and share feelings, but I also know how to lay a carpet/flooring, build things, do diy, gardening, keep my fish tank looking tidy, and like the occasional drink and still believe in harsher punishment especially at schools, and my sense of humour is pretty unfiltered. Probably why I don't have many friends either 😂 can't find anyone in that middle ground. Both stereotypes in this generation can look bad to the other side as ones seen as a nerd who doesn't step outside, and the others seen as a manual worker pub dweller.

The story about your dad has me 😂. My dad was the opposite when it came to plants, he was a "man's man", a Vietnam veteran, SpecOps, a mechanic, a fishermen, but also a farmer and rancher. So planting, growing and tending were apart of his nature. 😅 He loved chickens and loved gardening, so I feel like he would've enjoyed a planted tank. Just interesting dynamic. I'm a female, but since I was the eldest of the 4 kids, I was in charge of helping on the farm outside, whereas my 3 little brothers helped mom do the house work. 😅 funny how same but different families can be ❤

Very true. I started a saltwater tank about a year ago and it like I reinvented myself within the hobby. And those of you on the fence, it is not that much more expensive. I'm using the same canister filters I was using. Just that salt is added to the mix. To be fair, the fish are quite a bit more expensive, but definitely worth it. If you are on the fence, just do it. It is very rewarding. Now, on to a planted tank.... ;)

It's so fun to hear about others view on the world of aquariums. I told my partner I wanted an aquarium and he was like "fine, as long I don't have to do anything to it, do whatever you want". Then he came to the conclusion that if he ever should have one, it would be a heavily planted one. So now, when I put up one like that, he actually likes it, and if I ask for his opinion, he actually cares a bit :p It's still my hobby, but just adding some extra plants and so made him a lot more interested.

This is exactly how I felt moving to saltwater. After keeping freshwater for decades, it is cool, but starts to lose a bit of luster. Moving to saltwater truly reinvigorated my love for the hobby, it’s like it was brand new. On paper it may not seem so different, but the fish are totally different! They are awesome, and so much more captivating. It is more expensive, and more work, but I wouldn’t go back. This hobby has always been my main hobby and joy in life, and going saltwater has really cemented that. I’ve never loved a tank nearly as much as this one. Still stocking too, fish are expensive :)

As for me I started as a normal fishkeeper, then I tried aquascaping and went kack to keeping a lowtech tank, because aquascapes where too much of a hassle. Instead I got into tropical houseplants and find them more rewarding than aquarium plants to be honest. Now I am considering to try out aquaponics

Something I'd add is that experimenting with other types of set ups can help rejuvenate that love of the hobby. I'd start with a riparium, then a vivarium, then if you are up for it, a terrarium. I'd go this route because it's a better transition. Starting with a riparium means no need to worry about a terrestrial plant mix or drainage layer. You can just focus on the fundamentals of setting up a tank with an aquatic section and terrestrial section. One of they keys with a riparium is learning how to efficiently build up height without using way too many scaping materials. And as each step on that path is more expensive than the last it's a good idea to learn how to build with that mentality and with the methods to pull it off successfully with the least expensive of the 3 stages. A vivarium will have a tropical terrestrial substrate mix, and if you thought aquasoil was expensive the cost to make that mix or buy it pre made will blow the cost of aquasoil out of the water. You will need to account for the drainage layer when planting the aquatic section and need to invest in a misting system. All of which takes much more forethought than a riparium. You can also now massively expand your terrestrial plant selection and those plants are not cheep like aquatic plants. You can also now stock the tank with the land area in mind so things like vampire crabs or fire bellied toads. Then when you finally get to a terrarium you know the fundamentals for a good looking scape, the fundamentals of the drainage layer, as well as humidity management. You also have an understanding of aquatic plants so can easily add a water feature if you want. You now have an entirely new hobby under your belt and are going into it with a much deeper level of understanding than most people who get into bioactive terrariums do at the start. You will have an easier time of it as you did most of your learning through errors on the previous scapes. You have gotten use to using different materials like spray foam in your builds. And you probably have a bunch of spare materials. Another thing you can do is get a VERY different type of animal. If you have only kept fish, get some shrimp, or a species of aquatic Frog. If you are up for a genuine challenge and accept the very long term responsibility, get a small species of turtle like a musk or mud turtle. There are many things you can do to bring the passion for this hobby back. Just takes a willingness to learn again and a few hundred bucks to spare. Also a small tip for a riparium and vivarium. Go with rimless cubes and have them side by side then get a light long enough to span both tanks. Will save you a little bit of money on the light, especially if you go with a higher end brand like the fluval 3.0 or chihiros wrgb2 series. Getting a 48 inch instead of two 24 inch models of either one will save you over a hundred bucks. Use that saved money to invest in a hanging kit to really take your scape to the next level. Also I suggest using an ultrasonic mist maker on the riparium, makes for a really cool look when the lights are ramping up or down.

I want to see you in Charlotte at the Carolina Aquatics Expo in June, lol. My daughter wants to go so I have to drive 3 1/2 hours to Washington, NC. Spend the night, then me and her will be on the road at 5 a.m. Saturday. Drive back to Lexington to puck up my son and his girlfriend and then drive another 50 minutes to the Charlotte Convention center. Me and my son went down there yesterday to see where it was and where parking is so I don't waste time driving around downtown Charlotte which is not my favorite place to be on a Saturday. Can't wait to see you and Lisa and all the cool stuff.

If you are keeping coral or sensitive fish it can be very involved. Freshwater planted tanks generally take care of themselves imo.

I am in the same boat too. Been doing freshwater for a while until i wanted a new challenge and after weeks of gathering my supplies for a saltwater tank from dry rock , rodi systems to skimmers and everything in between. I did things on the low end budget such as finding stuff of offer up and fb marketplace. I finally pulled the trigger and started the process of coverting my 40g breeder that i had for guppies. Fast forward a couple months after having my tank cycle i finally purchased a pair of clowns. And man i can say it was all worth it 😅 my kids had their mind blown to have nemos in their living room . For anyone considering a saltwater tank . Its worth it and do-able on a budget. I think the parts i paid full price for was the pair of clown fish.

With you 100% on everything (haven't been to a baby shower either)! I got over the "planted" tank thing when I heard the term Aquascaping. That sounded a lot like landscaping which is manly enough so I dove in. Lol! Now I've got an awesome 90 gal Southeast Asian aquascaped tank that all my male (& female) friends flock to when they come over to our house. Oh, yes do the saltwater tank on a budget. I need an excuse to get back into marine fish.

Would love to see you do a Saltwater Tank on a budget John. I too decided to change it up and do a Saltwater Tank along with my Freshwater Tank I have been running for few years. After I upgraded my Freshwater tank and fish to a 55 gallon and kept the 37 gallon I had them in I decided to just dip my toes in Saltwater and did my own tank on a budget by converting the 37 gallon to saltwater. I just got me Tidal 75 HOB and a HOB Sea Clone Protein Skimmer and a 44 gallon Brute to mix my water in and I got a new light bar and glass lid and was off and running. Have done a couple water changes on her and things are going well. It’s been very rewarding and I love my tanks. Also do you guys have plants for sale that do well with Sandy substrates? I have sand for my 55 gallon freshwater and seem to have issues keeping plants unless I can attach to driftwood or put in easy planters. The problem is I want and need more but out of space for easy planters and on my driftwood. Thanks for everything and I love your saltwater tank I love the giant Oscar and Bichir Tank. One day when I own my own place with my own fish room I hope to follow suit with what you’ve done.

I'd also be interested in a budget marine tank video or series but also/moreso the "KG Tropicals" runthrough of maintaining and starting saltwater. There's a fair few good ones out there granted, but none that have grabbed me or engaged me. Definitely nothing that convinced me to try out "the dark side." PS I'm offended. 😉

PLEASE do Saltwater on a budget! I've been following you for quite some time and MJAquascaping just did a new saltwater tank, his first ever. My first ever aquarium memory was when I was 3 years old looking up at my dad's 75 gallon saltwater tank. It cracked when we moved, and he was finishing school with 5 kids...could not fix it. I've always had freshwater. I'm thinking my next will be salt, but man money is tight.

Yes, do a series about saltwater aquariums on a budget. For me it's the availability of saltwater fish that is the problem, most pet stores don't have any at all and those that do have a very limited selection. I live in Sweden.

Ive recently just got back into keeping a freshwater aquarium for the first time in years and its more the improvement in the variety of live plants that are now easily available that's really got me enthused about it so much! Also the incredible wealth of knowledge available now from great youtubers like yous guys🙌 has really helped Personally though ivecalways just been really averse to saltwater tanks and fish though, I just find the colours and brightness a too garish and a real turn off! Maybe it just gives my mildly autistic brian a bit to much of a sensory overload 😅

For sure do a video on starting a saltwater tank on a budget. If you can do a freshwater tank a saltwater tank is just as easy. Fish cost more and water changes cost a little more. Other than that same thing. Great content as usual 🙏. I miss my tanks. Someday soon I will take the plunge again 🙈🙏

Yes please John please do show us the budget marine tank. I’ve wanted to dive into the salt water world for a while but my Dad (who hasn’t kept fish for over 30 years but back in the day he kept Lion Fish, Sea Horses, Puffers, Clowns and many more in multiple tanks) says it’s too much work. He says marine is a full time job and can’t be done around working and raising children. He did it, but is adamant I shouldn’t because he struggled to keep it up. If you can show me a marine setup on a budget that can be maintained around a busy schedule, I’m in!!!
