Lisa, you and John did a fantastic job on this video!! I can't wait to see the rest of the series!! My sweet JJ, Jaws Junior, passed the other day. Before I buy another Betta (Bay-tuh, yeah- I know), I want to tear down the entire tank, remove the Ludwigia shrub growing up the blinds and across the counter, and start over! Once I'm settled, I'll be picking out one of your boys! Thanks and Best fishes to you and John!

I am 75 years old and first got into the hobby at age 9 for just about three years. I picked it up again about three years ago and have been rocking it ever since. The changes in filtration make things so much easier and much more fun. Thank you for what you guys do. I look to you for new information every time i go online.

You all are 1 of 3 reasons(Bob is #2🤫😜) why I made it as long as I have in this fish keeping kinda life! The ways you both explain things keeps things so simple and easy to retain! I wish I had used more patience years ago when I first started my first tank. I used so many unnecessary chemicals when it was going through its first of many other nitrogen cycles. Maybe you all can do a video on the do's and don'ts when cleaning a planted aquarium for some of the newbies ? I know how, but maybe there's some who don't? Thanks again you two!! 🥰

On the topic of lighting, you can have the light on for 12 hours a day, for example, if you divide the photo periods with a dark spell of 2 to 4 hours half way through the day. This allows the plants to go into a brief rest and the water to build up co2.

I would suggest that those wanting to set up a larger tank go for a marine ready tank. You place a sump tank down below the tank and tank water overflows back into the sump and it gets pumped back up to the tank. This setup skims the water surface keeping it oxygenated. The real beauty of the set up is you can place one or more filter socks down in the sump. You can get them in common sizes of 50 to 300 microns. The 200 micron socks will even filter algae out of the water leaving it crystal clear. As far as filtration goes shoot for three to four times the tank volume in flow per hour.

When I first got my tank, I had major issues with ammonia and the KH,GH & PH. The two best things I did was added crushed coral (AKA Aragonite) and I bought a UV Filter. Within a few days, the ammonia was down to zero and the other parameters came into line. My water has been crystal clear since. When it starts to look a little foggy, I plug the UV Filter back in and by the next day, crystal clear again!!
@LeonDeVoseII

Thanks! I will start with the Aragonite. I am not comfortable with my numbers of late. I may then pick up a UV filter. They are significantly less expensive than they once were.

A little quick fix when you have a lot of really small particles floating around is to use Acurel-F. It makes the particles stick together so your filter can catch them. It will make your water cloudy for about an hour or two then it becomes crystal clear. This is only a temp fix and something I only do occasionally. When I do it, its usually a sign that I need to clean/replace my polishing pad. In other words, the pad is clogged and can't get the super small particles, but when Acurel-F makes them clump together the pad can grab them.

Love this! Aguariums, like all pets and living things we own, have to be responsibly cared for. As you just pointed out with truth and humor, don't get any living thing ( dog, cat, fish, bird, plant), ANY living thing and bring it home, and not expect to care for it. Please do some research, ask questions of people with experience, and there's a great thing called U tube where lots of experienced people are ready and willing to give you information about caring for whatever living thing you bring home. Find out the care involved before you buy something. Thank you KG Tropicals again for Truth and humor.

Yes to everything shared; great advice! I do like though adding Seachem Pristine between feedings (I do not feed daily) no more than adding Pristine 1x weekly. My tanks are established and always crystal clear. However after adding Pristine it glistens like diamonds. I also believe, from experience, Pristine helps get rid of plant/fish waste if there's any lying around. Not a substitute for regular water changes/maintenance though!

I run Chemipure green and Purigen in one of the trays of my Oase Biotherm 350 canister filter along with Matrix and sponges in the other trays. I do a 20% water change weekly and clean the pre-filter. Every six weeks I do a complete filter cleaning and replace the Chemipure and Purigen. My 65 gallon is heavily planted with good flow from a small Tunze power head. The community tank is heavily populated with 50 small fish and Corys. Maintenance is about 60-90 minutes weekly, but the results are rewarding and make the hobby fun.Been running clean and clear for two years.

Keeping a much lower bioload than what I "could" fit in my tank. (50 ember tetras, 15 cories and 6 BNs in 400L) Running oversized biomedia sponge and cleaning it before it clogs up. Have a school of corys on a sand substrate to ensure anything that settles on the bottom gets whirled back up into the watercolumn and by extention finds its way into the filter. Running excessive light and enough plants to consistently outcompete any algae for nutrition. My maintainance consists mostly of hacking back the plants. That and the mandatory rinsing of filters and water changes. I generally find my system to be more stable the less I touch the tank.

This may be a bit controversial, but my idea of "bacterial bloom" cloudiness, is not when live bacteria appear, as the name may imply, but when they (and other microorganisms) die in mass quantities, and get dislodged to the water column. We can actually benefit by adding more bacteria, wich will consume the incoming amonia spike, product of the decomposing organisms. This type of cloudiness is also very common when, for some reason, we break the cycle, by chlorine poisoning, after cleaning a filter, etc. Either way, the solution is the same, just give it time to stabilise.

If it is a new tank, I just let it run its course. The heterotrophic bacteria, the cloudiness, appears when you make big changes too fast. In new tanks, that is basically happening every day. If it is a mature tank and I have exhausted my usual methods of higher flow and prefilters, I will hook up a high flow UV sterilizer which almost always works in 3 days or less. If it recurs, I know there is a systemic issue in the tank. If it is gone for good, it was just a fluke.

Get yourself a Phython and magnetic algae scraper, it makes the work so much easier and faster. With less mess, took me 45 minutes to an hour to finish my tank yesterday setting up a new 55 gallon.

I did start a tank and overlooked maintenance it needs but after how I learned to maintain it I just began loving cleaning my tank, cleaning algea, changing water and just taking care of the tank in general. Now I might even be spending a but too much time cleaning it out because I love to do it but at least my tank is PRISTINE

Great video! In all the years I've had fish, I've never had cloudy water. Algae and the white algae bloom on new driftwood...yeah. Guess I lucked out on that.. 😃🍄✌

Honestly, patience is key in my opinion. Don't add all the fish or fishes you want in your tank all at once. Make sure your tank is cycled then add a few fish at a time.
