I remember when I was a kid my Dad’s friends wife had a fishtank and her fish kept dying. My Dad kept fish(yes with an under gravel filter old school)😊 so she asked him what she was doing wrong. She then said I keep it really clean. I clean the tank and all the gravel with dish liquid. My Dad audibly sighed then calmly explained to her why that was wrong wrong wrong. This was the 80s. She actually felt so bad. She ended up not only learning how to properly care for her aquarium but found a book on aquatic plants. Being a florist she took to it, well, like a fish to water. Happy ending ❤ Nowadays, with the internet. With abundant information an instant away. There is no excuse for being a terrible pet owner.

So you kind of summed up the problem here. Your neighbor was able to get correct information because she recognized and asked someone successful at it. Not too far from my humble beginnings. My aunt bred neon tetras for the LFS when I was single digits old. I loved sitting in her fish room watching the fish. I always wanted a tank but couldn't afford it. Skip to me an adult with kids. My son won some gold fish from the fair. We rushed out to wally world for a tank. Bought a ten gallon kit and some black gravel. First fish died in a week. Second died in three. The tank was always dirty and cloudy. I felt terrible they died. Knew I could do better. I started watching youtube videos to educate myself. Twenty years and 5 dirted planted tanks later I say I did better.

I remember my dad keeping an aquarium when I was small. This was the 90s too. It's balanced and had clear water. No filter whatsoever. Somebody influenced my dad to clean it constantly to make it cleaner. He did that, ended up with some dead fish afterwards. Also there's us children who keep overfeeding the fish, making the water dirty. Then my dad felt it's just too much hassle he stopped the aquarium hobby 😢 I felt bad now.

I don't even have TikTok!!! I will admit, I used to do 95% water changes, while scrubbing down my decorations, filters, rinsing out the filter sponges until they were clear, adding new, clean water, then using water conditioners to get rid of the chlorine in the water. SORRY, I didn't know any better. I had NEVER been told about beneficial bacteria until I saw it in one of your videos. I'd put in a few plants (they always ended up melting) for decoration... never really gave it any thought that they would help the nitrate cycle and help with fish poop. My fish would still live for about 2-3 years, even with me doing it wrong. Now that I know better, I bet I can keep them alive even longer!

Just wow I have been into fish business for four years now and when I started out my tank never got that dirty I had no experience whatsoever. The only thing I can remember actually doing is changing most of the water every three days I think that’s what actually kept my fish alive . I mean, I don’t know if they’re doing those videos for views or they just really have no clue but common sense definitely goes along way !! Here I am with no experience started out with a 10 gallon struggling to keep the water crystal clear, but it never got green because I changed it every three days without experience. Then I moved up to a 29 gallon slowly water was crystal clear beautiful with no experience. Then I moved up to a 125 gallon planted aquarium. I always wanted to planted aquarium but wasn’t successful with the 29 gallon but now professional and it’s been four years crystal clear beautiful view canisters on there not over feeding and yeah successful now.

Its sad, but you are correct, most people who have aquariums are about the "pretty" and not about the fishkeeping. Unfortunately, a large portion of our local shop business relies on this behavior for their success. The local aquarium shops (who do love fish) try to train them, but it doesn't work. These non-fishkeeper folk lose their fish in a small number of months and they need to replace them. the shops win. What would happen if these people got smart and their fish began to live for years!? I think its these people that support my local shop, I know its not me because I have 10 tanks and haven't had space for new fish in well over a year. Its a terrible thing, but our hobby survives on a double-edged sword. How do we train these folks and help our local stores succeed?

I think i do need to replace them. but kind of afraid to dont want to crash my tank. don't it once. it cycled now, and i do see green and brown algae grow, i do clean it off bi weekly. i just top off my water . i do test on the water every three days to a week , light on up to 10 hours daily, on a low setting and i do have my UV light running for three days out of the week .. just to try to keep the algae grow in check. i dont have any algae eaters or shrimp. my water is clear, pass test. but the PH is 7.6 to 7.85, cant get it lower. i tryed the chem PH down and it has not changed .. so im not gonna mess with that to much, just set teh fish in it bag when i get more, let them chill for 15 minutes add in a little water over a hours time from tank and GO with it ..

I checked out Grant Chase's Fish channel on KZfaq. His tic-tok of cleaning his friend's tank was the good one. He's a young guy who makes mostly shorts. He's mostly a native fish enthusiast, using one of his tanks as a place to enjoy growing out a bass for his backyard pond. When the bass gets big, he releases it into his pond. He's a good fish keeper if you understand what he's doing. But he's not doing tropical fish, or at least that's not what I see as his main thing. Oh, and he likes turtles, too. Some tropical fish keepers might be horrified. But if you accept his project, he's doing a decent job with it, and he's having fun. His fish seem just fine. In my opinion, that's the important thing.

Oh boy 😮! I mean I wasn’t perfect when I started keeping fish and I did have rainbow gravel 😆. Yet, I knew not to clean everything and rinse out the gravel ( thank goodness I found your videos just in time ). My head is hurting now after watching this 😂

People ask why my tanks are so clean and I have no answer. I change the water once or twice a month, rarely clean the glass.. my shrimp, Daniel tank I never vacuum the gravel. There's alot of junk under the gravel I just don't disturb it lol

When I first started playing around with fish I actually found the pet shop very helpful.. my first tank I got for free 100L and it was filthy putrid brown and stank!! So I actually did completely empty the tank and replace the gravel I kept the ornaments though and I refilled it and let it go for a month it went all green and foggy and I was worried that the fish was unsafe but I went and asked the pet shop and got some information did a 50% water change added some conditioner and some clarify added a sponge filter with air stone and now it's clear and has been a year and 6 cleanings and all is well.. I do have a mix of fish 2 of which can be bullies (1x dwarf blue guwami and 1x angel fish) they only bully new fish of the same breeds though.. my fancy goldfish and panda cats are all very happy.. I have 5 Cory cats 2x pandas 2x bronze 1 red eye albino all are doing well and are 2 inches each and I have 4x fancy goldfish all are very happy and I won't add more fish in this tank but am looking for another 100L tank and 3 dividers to house some betas but they will war so I will need to separate the tank into 3 parts as the kids want 1 each of different colours 😂.. I also found google search to be fairly right!! Not everything is perfect information but a good 90% was very good information so there is that.. I'd never trust tictok for anything other than a few laughs that's all it's good for.

What makes me upset is the fact that people can have this nasty water, and also way too many fish in way too small tanks (ie the goldfish and angelfish), and yet their fish survive. But then I spend months researching and preparing my tank to perfection just for my fish to die after not even a year.

I recently bought (more like rescued) a 14 inch common wolf fish, she came with her tank and let me tell you I pretty much could not see into the glass it was that dirty the algae and what looked to be dried up blood worms when we finally got her and her tank in the house the stuff off the sides of the tank was black !!! Like it looked like motor oil it was that black and the filters had like 2inches of poop on them, the guy refused to do anything cuz he was scared of the wolf fish bitting him, don’t get a fish you can’t handle

I have 10 gal betta tanks (2 of them, and only 1 betta per tank, with no tank mates) I would NEVER let my tanks get even half as dirty as some of these tanks in the vids. The only way my tanks would ever look "brown" is because of the Indian Almond Leaf tannins that I always have in my tanks. 🤣

We currently live in a world were everyone's "opinion" is valid, and is held to the same degree of credibility as actual fact; and the people dominating it can't wrap their head around the reality of science - that it is data that needs to be ever re-confirmed and statistically proven (not absolut) and that the conclusions needs to be updated as we accumulate more data and learn new things. Pier Review matters! Just because the "truth" is not absolut does not make it less true and we can also never prove a negative. And that for some reason have all these people totally missundertand the concept of research and why some should do the talking and others do the listening. Instead have all these self proclaimed experts with no humility, no standars. It angers me every time. Yeah, I am old and grumpy.

I went straight for the like button when you mentioned that spongebob pineapple in your closing statement and would've subscribed if I hadn't already. That's what I said. Also, the grey hairs in my beard have gotten the upper hand in the meantime too. As a measure of understanding. Your choice of backdrop soothed the pain of witnessing some horrendous sights on the right at least a little!

I didn't realize you're supposed to take the fish out to clean a tank. I always left mine in. I only change out 20 percent of the water at most but now I know I'm supposed to change all of the water and then bleach everything. Maybe after all of these changes, I can then put 25 gold fish in my 5 gal nano. Yay for more fish! Thanks tictok!!

25 years ago before there was KZfaq I had a 75 gallon with two Oscars and a common pleco. I would let it run until it got disgusting and would do exactly what these people did. I would take the fish out of the tank and remove all the water and decor. I would take the tank outside and wash it with the water hose. I would add water straight from the water hose into the tank and immediately put the fish back in without dechlorinator. The fish did seem a little stressed but they survived. If I did that to any of my tanks now they will all be dead.
