Composers: Aram Ilyich Khachaturian
Artists: Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, Evgeny Svetlanov (conductor)
Along with Shostakovich and Prokofiev, Khachaturian was one of the most famous and celebrated composers of the Soviet Union. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, his earliest musical influences were the folk music of Georgia and of his ancestral homeland, Armenia. His ballet Gayaneh, composed in 1942, tapped into this passion for his Armenian heritage; set on a collective farm, its story is concerned with the triumph of love and loyalty to the Motherland over treason - themes that would keep Stalin happy. Khachaturian’s later ballet Spartacus, written in 1956, took the famous story of the Greek slave turned gladiator and his defeat of the Roman general Crassus as its basis. Composed in the dying years of Stalin’s rule, Khachaturian and his audiences were drawn to the story’s theme of resistance against tyranny.
Several movements from these ballets have taken on a life outside the original ballet suites - for example, the Sabre Dance from Gayaneh and the famous Adagio from Spartacus - ensuring that these wonderful and colourfully scored ballet suites have become firm favourites in the concert hall.
‘The Bolshoi orchestra are obviously completely at home in this repertoire, and Svetlanov’s ear for orchestral detail is as sure as ever. How beautifully he handles the tapering down at the end of the ‘Dance of the Nymphs’ (from Spartacas), while the opening of the ‘Dance of the Young Girls of Gadès’ brings a slow, subtle crescendo… The famous ‘Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia’ has never sounded more touchingly refined on record and the climax does not disappoint. In Gayaneh there is a beguilingly sinuous sophistication in ‘Ayesha’s dance’, and the ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Gayeneh’s Adagio’ are beautifully played, creating much delicacy of texture.’ Gramophone.
00:00:00 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Dance of the Rose Maidens
00:02:41 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Aysha’s Dance
00:07:04 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Dance of the Highlanders
00:09:01 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Lullaby
00:14:54 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Noune’s Dance
00:16:39 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Armen’s Var
00:18:37 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Gayaneh’s Adagio
00:22:37 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Lezghinka
00:25:35 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Dance with Tambourines
00:28:35 Gayaneh, Ballet Suite: Sabre Dance
00:30:58 Spartacus, Ballet Suite: Introduction - Dance of the Nymphs
00:37:02 Spartacus, Ballet Suite: Aegina’s Dance
00:41:02 Spartacus, Ballet Suite: Scene and Dance with Crotalums
00:44:55 Spartacus, Ballet Suite: Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia

The thing about classical music is you don't have to stop listening to other kinds of music to enjoy classical. I like classical except for Mozart . My favourites are Beethoven, Wagner , Tchaikovsky, Satie, Arnold Schoenberg, Holst and Khachaturian. I also like Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and early Pink Floyd.

@@WilliamRWarrenJr To unpack this comment for everyone else, Kubrick quotes the Gayaneh Adagio in 2001 Space Odyssey to brilliant effect, a monument to solitude in a professional tech environment. I was always reminded of that scene in the film as I had middle of the night work in some computer labs.

Aram Khachaturian is precious gift bestowed upon not only people of Armenia, but all those fortunate enough to be in the wide vicinity of the beautiful Ararat. Ararat tells stories of love, pain, suffering, genocide, survival and reincarnation of Daughters and Sons of beautiful culture and traditions of Armenia. They stand tall and proud and share their life and love with the rest of us. One million of them suffered a genocide which was only surpassed by the Holocaust. Whenever I hear the word Armenia or Armenian, a deep emotion awakens in my entire body and soul. A mixed feeling of love and sorrow. I love to embrace the person or touch the skirt of Ararat and shower the person or the soil of Armenia with kisses and roses. At the same time tears uncontrollably roll down my cheeks as if to acknowledge the pain and suffering that we have allowed to be inflicted on these wonderful specimen of humanity and christianity. When I hear Aram Khachaturian or Isabel Bayrakdarian or Vigen, it is as if they are speaking on behalf of Ararat. Ararat is animated in its most divine and angelic manifestation. Salute to Aram, the stout and proud son of Armenia. Salute and love to all Daughters and Sons of the rich culture of Armenia. PS: Gayaneh tops it all. With all my love, Sincerely, Manoucher Ghajar

This is the most exciting ballet of all ballets. The music and dancers give an incredible experience of the best blend of two arts. I would say gymnastics too, because the movements of the ballet are so incredibly athletic! The ballet was shown for the first time in the 60s at Bolshoy, and 2 dancers Vladimir Vasiliev- Spartacus and Maris Liepa- Krass, became legends of the Ballet. It is still the milestone for the dancers, huge test of their skills, and so far nobody can outperform Russian male dancers. But there is an opportunity for ballet connoisseurs to judge that for themselves, thanks to KZfaq and Internet.

See the ballet! The music seems more dramatic, when you see the athletisism of Spartacus and Krass, danced by Vladimir Vasiliev and Maris Liepa, respectively; see the heart-aching duet of Spartacus and his wife, no less athletic. The ballet is a Treasure. See Russian dancers, nobody can compete with them in that ballet.

This is the worst interpretation of the "Gayane" suite that I have ever heard. Mostly heavy tempo, misreading and sometimes distortion of Khachaturian's music. Obviously, Svetlanov, except for the Saber Dance, is not familiar with the ballet "Gayane". But there are not so many questions about "Spartacus", but this is a separate topic of discussion...
