Saying that people overdose on drugs because they take them in a new location and the body doesn't have time to adjust, as she put it, is a pretty bold claim. Where does this information come from? I'm curious to see some citations on this because I've studied pharmacology for years and never heard of anything like this. Or at the very least, could you tell me what this phenomenon is called so I can look it up myself?

I think means this : For exemple. you take your drugs in the same exact same place for exemple 10 years . After some time, you'll need to take more and more drugs to get to the high point. Let's say that you take a gram of cociane (idk how much you need to take) in a room. Then after 3 years you go from one gram to 10 grans to have the same high (because you ALWAYS do the same thing for 10 years). One gram is enough to make you feel high, but because your body is "countering it", you now need 10 gram to counter your body. But one day, you really feel the need to take cocaine on your way back home. So your body doesn't do anything to countering the drugs and you take 10 grams. 1 gram is enough to make you feel high but when your body is countering it you need 10 grams. But your body took 10g so you now o.d.. But idk where it's from :p but sounds logical tho

You're pretty much correct yeah. And no it's not a 'bold claim' it's supported by psychological studies. Plenty of research has looked at environmental influence on the body and drug taking. It connects back to Pavlov's classical conditioning theory. There have been studies that have interviewed users of methamphetamines and found that when they found the common consistency was when these individuals overdosed it was when they moved from their regular location.

Actually, this would be because you have a residual drug in your system that the body would normally have time to process but because you have taken it soon it has not.

The only proof is that if someone stops using drugs for a substantial period of time and then tries to take the same does they use to take, or that there is a change in purity, increase strength of the active chemical their body is not used to that level and that would be a direct result of the drug this is a direct OD. One issue that is not mention is the effect of the liver in processing while there is local tolerances that develop their is also a tolerance thought the increase of particular enzyme in the liver, and abstinence cause these enzyme to decrease. So when returning to misuse the general mechanism for processing substances may not be able to cope or the user could experience liver failure which can contribute to OD. There could also be the factor that the person is not using the drug from their normal sources and so the are different, more deadly toxins mixed with the substance, this is a related OD, but it is the toxins that killed. However, there may be what is call a secondary effect in that for example the person has a heart attack due to the extra physiological effect is an indirect as this means the person died because of a heart attack not an overdose. For example if someone takes a drug and under the influence walks out in front of a bus and is killed. While we recognised that the person may not have step in front of the bus if they had been fully cognizant, not taken the substance, the corner would not write death by substance misuse they would write death by accident, that hit by a bus.

Oversimplification to the point of being wrong. Take this video with the understanding that you're missing a tremendous piece of the puzzle.

I don’t know why this video has so much hate? The statements are in relation to counteradaptation! This was produced by Koob and Le Moal and explains a reason for drug craving and relapse. The homeostasis regulates the body in all environments. The brain however becomes adapted to environments involving drugs therefore inducing homeostasis in preparation for drugs. There are changes to the brains HPA axis (causing increase in corticotropin releasing hormone) and pathways has been altered. Therefore causing negative emotions like anxiety and depression. This creates a negative reinforcement of needing the drug to obtain the drug when the user is withdrawing from the drug resulting in relapse

pardon me, i love khan academy, it is a great resource and I've been using it for months to learn about math, history, science, and economics. however, in this video i noticed you said "inject cocaine", is this correct? as far as i know, from reading and experience, people usually snort it, for lack of a better word. anywho just wanted to point that out. i appreciate your videos. take care.

It is not uncommon to inject cocaine.
@daviddungworth3710
@daviddungworth3710 5 жыл бұрын
Cocaine can be taken in multiple forms. Research pharmacokinetics, intravenous self administration is one of the quickest ways to get a high because the substance dissolves straight in to the bloodstream whereas snorting has to pass through mucous membranes. Therefore everyone who snorts cocaine and thinks they’re “cool” and “big” really are pussying out on a bigger hit!

Unfortunately the psychological reinforced habits are nothing to do with location including ritualistic activities. The reinforcement is the reactions the narcotics have on the reward system that motivates repetition of seeking the pleasurable aspects. Location of drug use has nothing to do with what's implied here

This sounds like an older, wiser sister telling a younger sibling about drugs but has no actual experience taking drugs nor a medical degree. Injecting cocaine? I mean... I guess in a clinical study a doctor might administer it intravenously or intramuscularly but who in the fuck injects coke out there?
