‘Kharyok’ is a film on music in Ladakh, narrated by three protagonists - a royal dancer, the queen mother of Mulbekh and a veteran songwriter and singer. Each character traces the history of music in the region, looking at how the art developed with royal patronage and centred around performances held at the Namgyal palace in Old Town Leh. As the film progresses it also looks at the nuances of the social and political situation in Ladakh as the kingdom moved from the Namygal dynasty to Dogra rule, and after 1947, the ushering in of democracy.
