The esteemed maestro of classical singing, ‘Ustad Saami’ performs Khayal at A for Aleph Live. Ustad Naseeruddin Saami comes from the lineage of the Qawwal Bachay who inherit their musical knowledge from Mian Samat Bin Ibrahim, principal disciple of Amir Khusrau.
Keeping alive the 13th Century-Old tradition of the 49-note scale, the master of microtonal vocals Ustad Saami is an accomplished practitioner of surti music. Being the direct descendant of Tanrus Khan - the legendary court musician of Bahadur Shah Zafar, further strengthens Ustad Saami's voice of tradition. His rich expertise also includes Qawwali, all of which he intends to pass on to his sons who are a part of this ensemble.
In this performance, he delivers ‘Khayal’ which is performed in improvisation, and requires an extensive orchestration of Ragas. He sings this khayal in raag bhimpalasi, that entails 5 notes ascending and all 7 descending, and performed in the early afternoon of the day.
