I’m traveling Vietnam 🇻🇳 right now and if anyone really wants a unique perspective about the war and terrain, then I highly recommend coming here. It’s beautiful, there’s lots of war history, people are friendly and it’s cheap. Hue city has bullet holes everywhere and if you want to visit khe sanh you can take a tour. Happy travels, just go. God bless all you vets. What a hard place to fight

As a Marine (95-99) I have always been fascinated by that war. I have only my many books and a few veterans that I know to look to for any information or stories, but I would love one day to go to Vietnam and visit these sacred battle sights. Thank you so much for posting!

I pray that the wounds carried in these men's memories are overshadowed by the small bits of laughter and comradery they had with one another. Many today can't comprehend this but these young men who witnessed this didn't just lose their boyish innocence they had part of their souls ripped away only to spend the rest of their lives trying to repair the damage of a constant open wound. You can put a bandage on an internal hemorage and while the outside sees evidence of healing inside the wound still bleeds and ravages. This is the true and ultimate pain of war and this is what it does to the soul.

I hated that war, still do. I was with MCB 11 at Fire Base Dong Ha in 1967 and before that in Da Nang not far from Marble Mountain in 1966. My last work assignment was to a special small team made up of various skilled construction workers sent to Khe Sanh to replace the aging runway there. I believe that it was the French that established the base so it had a history of strategic importance. That was evident by the remains of various pieces of equipment and structures still remaining made by Peugeot and Eiffel. I spent about 4 mos. into November there up to when it was my time to be mustered out for discharge in December 1967. So I missed the siege yet I have always identified to that particular struggle because of all that I did experience while in Khe Sanh. I know of the hill mentioned in this video, as well as others in the surrounding areas. It was at Khe Sanh that I developed a deep attachment to the Marines there, Marines I didn't even know personally, but to see the medevacs one after another and to see dead NVA piled up after extraction was gut wrenching even to this day. It was not uncommon to here of outposts being over run and to expect mortar and rocket attacks at any time during day and night. The NVA and Viet Nam resistance had been moving military equipment to that region for years in anticipation of just what did occur during the Tet. I was recently in New Mexico on my way east on I40 and I made sure I stopped by the Khe Sanh Bridge Memorial just off I40. I took a shot glass with me as well as a 5th of Seagrams and when I arrived I poured one out for all the lost troops there during the siege as well as before. I poured a shot and placed it on the memorial for the spirits to rise and be taken by those that deserve the tribute. I fell to my knees and wept, tears that had built up over the years now finally spilling. So, Thank You Dennis, and to others that made it back and have not forgotten.

Some of the Marines there died because their new M-16 rifles kept hosing up. Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense during the war, accepted the M-16 as the replacement for the M-14. But to save like 50-cents per rifle he decided not to have the inside of the M-16 barrels nickle plated. Bullets would jam up inside the barrels and the Marines (Army and Navy, also) had to field strip the rifles and try to ram the bullets out of the barrels. Many died trying to clear the jams. McNamara has a special place in hell where he is screaming in agony.

I think you will find it was chrome plating, not nickel plating, and the jamming was an ammunition problem. Not the actual barrel of the M16 which was much lighter and better in jungle country.

The true story! Remember admiral Morrison and his son who “protested” this war ?
@johnbasiglone1219
@johnbasiglone1219 4 жыл бұрын
There was a plan, a plan to prolong the misery of this war. The war profiteering from LBJ and his cronies and the entire military industrial complex. And this includes the gutless generals and admirals that used America's FINEST as cannon fodder in this CIA and politician run heinous laboratory. Not one general or admiral resigned their commission in protest to how this charade was run. They all knew the North could have been halted in 6 weeks and the war stopped in 3 months, that is if they truly wanted to win it and get it over with.The Generals and Admirals knew this war was being fought to only prolong the misery. But not one had the ethics to resign and make a profound statement and tell the American people that this war is not being fought to win and to tell the American people that the military is having both hands tied behind their backs, a policy that will cause more senseless bloodshed in this protracted bloodbath. Either fight it to win it or get the F_ck out. In the 1980s, I was a young officer and aviator who flew with many older aviators who flew combat missions in all of Vietnam, from Hanoi to the Delta. These bright men told me all about the profit motive for prolonging the war. They clued me into Johnson , more specifically Lady Bird owning Bird Air and also being a major shareholder in Sea Land sea container company. Nearly everything that went to Vietnam was sent in a Sea Land container. They told me about the huge amount of materials and weapon system suppliers that were bases out of Texas, more of LBJ's cronies. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Ask any aviator flying strikes up North what a waste it was. Bombing empty jungle and wasting tax payers money, but that money was going in somebody's bank account. At first glance it all seems like senseless folly. Bullshit! It was done to bilk the taxpayers of billions and billions, at a huge, irreparable cost to the Vietnamese people and our young men and their families. What a horrible, horrible period that was set in motion and perpetrated by evil sociopathic men, the politicians in suits and the cowards in uniform with stars on their shoulders who valued their next star more than the welfare of their men. The victims were our young men and the people of Vietnam. It is no different today. The American people are damned by their short memory and seemingly loss of values. When will we ever learn.

John Basiglone same as today! LBJ was catering to his Israeli Zionist buddies... the same ones who took out jfk and pushed this Vietnam war. Same ones that did the USS liberty and what’s not strange is those same GB’s who fought there said the war was right. No fooking surprise all are Mercs after they retire w 20. All those fooking silver stars mean shit to me.

They didn't die for nothing. The communists paid a HEAVY toll for their adventures. And communism didn't spread any further....No. Korea and Vietnam. China was Communist already.(and a big backer of spreading it around Asia) And look today, I guarantee you many Vietnamese wish we would have stayed.

Darkstar BS. Those Vietnamese young people who left Vietnam early on because they believed what Americans told them that the communists were coming ....are now in Canada and the USA asking, where are all those great jobs and freedom you told us about? Isn’t that ironic and sad ....because those good jobs and freedom doesn’t exist in those countries. The country that you left 40-49 years ago is where the jobs and freedom are. You don’t get it man! You are a “dark star” for sure!

Dammit, I was in school at Ft.Sill and watched on TV the Tet Offensive. However, I was in Khe Sanh in April, 1968, and experienced incoming from Co Roc. In July, '68, I was recalled to Btry G, 3rd Bn, 12th Mar, at Khe Sanh. The Btry formed a convoy to go east on Route 9. We got on to Route 9 and heard the first shot from Co Roc. That round went over us into the river. Then we heard the second round. It hit the ridgeline to our south. Then we heard the third round...it went over us into the river. The convoy immediately stopped and every Jarhead got out into the road and yelled: you couldn't hit us.
