I love it when artists don't deviate too much from the structure of the song when performing it live. So you can actually participate.

Both aproaches have their merits. I have played with Old Timers who change number of bars in the verse. A spontaneous lyrical thing? Gotta be paying attention. Having your best version, recording it and sticking to the sound of the song can be real good too I give a shout out to Houston grom Austin

To each their own. I ask you this though, when you are with friends and family do you have a pre-determined speech or talking points that you no not deviate from? I look at music as if it were a conversation between the band members, one that I get to witness in the present as I watch and listen. I prefer that experience to be more organic in nature and less machine like. If I want to listen to a studio version of a song I’ll just put on my headphones and zone out.

I always say that the bass and drum parts, almost anyone could play. They certainly have a style and each person brings their own, but there might only be a few people in the world who are as well-connect and incredible with their guitar and Mark Speer is. He is one of the best alive right now.
