Despite being a South Indian myself (although often mistaken for a Punjabi, mostly a Delhi Punjabi owing to my surname 😁), I picked up most of the meanings in this song on my first listening session. In fact, I had written an almost harangue on the "Saanu saudha nahi puggdha" (see! the usage of 'h' in Hindi words gives away my identity, doesn't it?) line on Quora a couple of years ago detailing the history of undivided Punjab and the ensuing partition thereafter and how there still exist on both sides of the border, bleeding hearts pining for mutual love and affection, acceptance and forgiveness for the past events. The treatise that I had written ended up being so in depth both politically and philosophically that it moved me to tears myself during the process of writing it and I rate it personally as one of my finest pieces of writing on Quora till date as it had flowed straight from the heart. Unfortunately, I eventually deleted my Quora account owing to certain personal differences of opinion with their policies and owing to the presence of too many stupid bullies there, thus erasing all of my writing there permanently. I manage to speak a good deal of Punjabi myself owing to my love for all languages and Punjabi in particular. Although, I must admit that it isn't very difficult to pick up most Indian languages owing to the fact that they draw from Sanskrit a lot. So there. Those are my two cents on this subject. Cheers!

When he’s singing about Satluj river, he’s talking about partition. Basically saying: We are not in favour of this trade. Chenab river is asking Ravi river: how is Satluj? He continues: Path to Peshawar is long and far. At Wagha border, she is asking which way is to Lahore? Beautiful. Moving words.

Although the whole country suffered from the 1947 Partition, I believe Punjab and Bengal suffered the most. The states themselves were partitioned into east and west and many families got destroyed in the ensuing violence and bloodshed. Myself being from Punjab, I would say we lost a great lot to Pakistan in the Partition. Hope that one day those old wounds will be healed. Jai Hind!!
