I've been driving my PHEV Niro for 1.5 years and still love it. I do several 1500 mile trips each year so the EV was not a choice. Except for those trips I hardly use any gas and do not miss having to fill it up every week like I did my Prius. It's roomier, higher and has better tech, too.

When electric range goes to empty the car reverts to hybrid not petrol only. Thats the key point of the car

I don't think the ev mode allows full depletion of the battery. It maybe more reliant on engine but you will never drive without some electric motor. I get what you're saying an 90/10 split favoring the engine is basically a petrol...if that is in fact what happens.

Sorry, you explain this incorrectly. The basic hybrid averages between 40-100% electric at all times. It even re-charges itself when driving on full electric EV. I get 55-62mpg in cooler weather and 68-72mpg in warmer weather, as dryer warmth improves battery efficiency

the battery will never empty on the Kia Niro PHEV. When the battery is around 20% the car changes into the hybrid mode, the car behaving as the Kia Niro HEV but with the added weight of the larger battery this one has. So if you do not bother to plug the Kia Niro PHEV each day, the gas fuel economy will be worse than the Kia Niro HEV (the hybrid version)

Why would someone buy a *PLUG IN* hybrid and not plug it in?
@Daniel-Condurachi
@Daniel-Condurachi 2 жыл бұрын
@@HaydenLau. there are some reasons, especially if you bought it on your company. You will pay less company taxes and even road taxes in some countries, and then on the whole lifetime ownership it will be cheaper to run. I own a plugin hybrid BMW and I plug it in almost every time

I have owned a Niro phev for a year and have one major problem, it is no use for short commutes as you have to use the engine for 20 minutes each day to stop dampness in the oil forming an emulsion which sets off the crankshaft sensor which is a MOT fail. To run the engine you would need to use up the electric or not charge it which defeats the purpose of buying such a car.

Nice review but please let us know a bit about availability. I know that's a problem with the all electric version. Also "self charging hybrid" is misleading please explain it if you must use it. All hybrids, plug in hybrids and electric cars are "self charging" by the Toyota definition.

Once the electric-only range is depleted, you say it behaves like a normal "petrol engine" vehicle. Wouldn't it in fact continue to use the hybrid battery, similar to the Niro Hybrid version?

I have a loaded Niro hybrid and it's a great car . Great fuel economy and a nice interior . I live in Canada not the UK so I don't want an all electric yet with our infrastructure. On the hev or phev putting her in sport mode makes the car a little sportier .

10 months we’ve had problems with our KIA NIRO PHEV vehicles. Having spoken to other KIA Niro PHEV drivers I know that this is not an isolated problem with our lease fleet vehicles. At the beginning of this year one of these 2021 vehicles was replaced with a 2022 vehicle due to an accident and this was handed to us with the same faults if not worse. KIA dealers have completed several software updates without any success and the whole thing is now, and has been for a few months, very annoying and frustrating. I can’t believe that a crack squad of engineers, as I’ve been told, in LG and KIA have been unable to solve the problem. The Faults include but are not limited to : • Satellite navigation does not work after dusk, this includes KIA Built in Satellite Navigation, APPLE CarPlay & Android Auto using GOOGLE MAPS, WAZE, APPLE Maps etc. We've had to buy cradles to support their phone and make sure it’s not connected to the car. • “wrong direction” warnings at all times of the day even when it’s clearly the correct direction. This sounds even when the infotainment system is switched off and sometimes constantly sounding for ten minutes, it’s at its worse when travelling down a one way street the correct way. • When Cruise control is set it shows 3 dashes instead of the speed set • Compass shows you travelling in the opposite direction to travel DON'T BUY THESE VEHICLES!!!!!!

One the best things about the Niro PHEV: official 1.3 metric ton tow capacity. You can order it with the in-car electric fittings premade, so installing the tow bar itself won't be nearly as expensive.

Interesting, but it is not really much of an advance in auto motive engineering. My 16 year old Audi A2 has achieved a constant 50+ mpg over 215,000 miles without it needing be a hybrid anything. It seats 4 and has a bigger boot (only by about 30 litres admittedly). As it could be run on full bio diesel I believe it is potentially greener too. But as there are no bio-diesel retailers or many EV charging points nearby keeping the car is still a better option than the Kona anyway. So called ‘full’ or ‘self-charging’ hybrids are not an option and even a plug-in hybrid would only be a greener option if they could do the 50 mile commute round trip without using petrol. I see no option for those of us living outside cities living rural areas but to wait for more charging points as until then 50+ mpg (in real everyday use) is about as good as it gets. I could only be tempted by a ‘self-charging’ hybrid if they could achieve an average of at least 65 mpg consistently over a lifespan of 20 years. But that’s not going to happen is it. In summary no ‘full’ hybrid is significantly greener than my 16 year old Audi A2. Unless someone can prove otherwise. A car’s diesel engine’s toxic nitrous oxide fumes is not significantly different to a petrol car’s engine as the toxic diesel fumes issue appears to relate more to commercial and public transport vehicles.

In stop and go or casual slow around town driving fuel economy excels . I have the hybrid Niro and it gets better mileage driving in the city than on the highway . But it gets good mileage in all driving . It tends to be less efficient when it's below freezing . But still much better than regular cars . Just this year here in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada where I live we've had the temperature range from _37c to +36c and this car had no issues .

Heating only possible with a combustion engine👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼 Please take a critical look at the subject of heating on all KIA plug-in models! From October to Easter you not only need winter tires but usually also a heater. Therefore, the E-license plate for the KIA plug-in hybrids is only an empty sign for the period mentioned. This situation is criminally to be denounced! The resulting CO2 emissions (this is even significantly higher on short trips) compared to other manufacturers with electrical heating of the interior, this technical implementation is not too acceptable! Here the Federal Environment Agency should threaten the manufacturer with consequences (e.g. cut the innovation premium). Maybe then KIA will react ... Related customer inquiries about the faux pas are dismissed with flimsy justifications to protect the engine.

Only justification for buying a Hybrid car is when daily usage exceeds 300 miles or more, other than that pure electric or EV is viable and wise obtion. Imagine buying a car with 2 power train, tugging it along everywhere, 2 problems to sort, using 2 fuels everyday, 2 services, pay more for it ,etc....!!!! Also it's important to remember that, 30 mile pure electric they claim is useless in motorways/ heavy on gas pedal as it wouldn't give anything close to that figure. It just doesn't make any sense at all.
