Hey Youtubians!! Today we are going to talk about the things that have gone wrong with our 2014 Kia Rio Ecodynamics 3 5dr car.
To give you a little bit of background we have owned this car since December 2019 when we bought it from Stoneacre Volvo in Harrogate and while we absolutely love the way the Kia Rio looks, feels and drives it has come with a host of problems that luckily between Stoneacre Harrogate and Kia's amazing 7 year warranty has sorted out with no cost to us.
We talk about the following things going on the car:

Clutch - it needed a new one as the pedal was close to the ground
Front Radiator - as it was leaking which we weren't aware of
Driver side folding mirror
Radio Antennae - needed a new one as Kia Rios tend to rust under the antennae on top of the car's roof
EGR Valve - needed a brand new one
Oil level sensor - needed replacing
So as you can see quite a few things needed doing on the Kia Rio and the only thing I didn't highlight in the video was the potential cost if we weren't covered would have been in the range of up to £2,000!

Prima greseala de achizitie este ca are motor diesel. Nu se cumpara masini cu moatoare diesel Dieselul este pt. masini mari, utilaje enorme, vapoare, camioane care functioneaza nonstop. Motorul este complicat la masinile mici si f. defectuos. Intretinerea este scumpa si in final zicala cu mere si pere.

I have same problem with engine start in the winter, also passenger airbag light which problem seems is connected with cables in the steering wheel. Stll not fixed, warranty - none.

Hi there and thank you for commenting. Sorry to read that you have been experiencing the same issue as us with the engine not starting. We took the Rio featured in the video to a Kia dealership and typically it was ok with them and there was no issues so it is something that we will have to try and diagnose and sort out ourselves now it is out of warranty. The only thing I have noticed is that on the forums is that it does seem to be a 1.4 CRDi issue and the 1.6 CRDI seems to be a better engine not suffering as much with this problem. If we find out what the culprit is during this next up and coming winter I will write about it on here or even make an update video. Hope you get the airbag light issue sorted. Cheers, Tony - WTA

The resprayed rims look really nice, how much did they cost and where were they done? Just got mine and the alloys are somewhat corroded, many thanks!

Hi there and thank you for your comment. The rims were refurbed as part of the deal when we bought it from the dealership a few years ago. Like yours, it originally had the brushed steel effect which had corroded and the dealership refurbed them and painted them professionally prior to us picking up the Kia Rio and I have to say I think they do look a lot better than the stock wheels. I think if you were to get yours refurbed professionally then it is well worth looking into. Hope it helps! Cheers, Tony - WTA.

The bite point on the clutch was very low compared to after the clutch was replaced on the Kia Rio. It was one of Kia’s technicians that told us it needed replacing. Cheers, Tony - WTA

Hows the Air conditioning on it? is it still working well, nice cold air? and the heating. So all those repairs you had done were all covered for you on the warranty You even got the clutch fixed on warranty even though thats normally a wear and tear?

Hi there and thank you for your questions. From what I understand the Air Conditioning seems to be working as it should at the time of typing my reply and the heating works just as well - trust me as it is my wife's car I would hear about it if it wasn't. The repairs mentioned did get sorted by both Kia in Durham and SG Petch in Sunderland (who went above and beyond to help us get it repaired just before the warranty with Kia ended) via Kia's warranty programme. The only thing of note was that if the repair was more cosmetic, like for example condensation in one of the rear light clusters, then Kia wasn't interested in getting it sorted under the warranty which was a bit of a downer but there you go. Regarding the clutch, I think I had mentioned in the video that it was a repair that wasn't under Kia's warranty, as you have rightly mentioned, and as we only had the car for such a small amount of time and had not covered a lot of miles in it then we had to argue with the dealership that we got it from that it was an issue that was present at the time of purchase. A phone call direct to the service manager managed to sort it out and they agreed to pay for it to get fixed. All in the experience with Kia hasn't been too bad when getting things fixed under their warranty and I have to say it does depend on the dealership you are dealing with, especially SG Petch in Sunderland whose customer service was immense. We still have the car and have to say that we still love driving it and hopefully it will be one that we have for a few years to come so if you have any further questions then please get in touch! Hi what codes came on your car with needing the egr replacing? I'm getting p0101 on my kia rio 1.4crdi I've replaced the maf air flow senser with no.luck. cheers

Hi there and thank you for your question. To be honest I am not sure whether it was the whole clutch assembly or parts of it that they had changed but I know it was a lot better to drive when we picked it up. Sorry I cant be of more help. Cheers, Tony - WTA

You trying to do magic with your hand there buddy? problems I've had with mine are calipers sticking, low clutch biting points, and usually previous owner neglect (worn pads, miss-aligned wheels, old glow plugs etc). my first Kia and maybe not the last, they are decent cheap motors.

Ha ha that comment did make me laugh!! I totally agree with you, the problems we had were probably down to previous owner neglect and as you have said Kia's are very cheap, decent motors and the one we have at the moment we aim to keep for a very long time! Cheers, Tony - WTA

I am not really sure as I am not a qualified mechanic. Try a few of the Kia forums and see how you get on, alternatively it may be worth a visit to your local mechanic and see what they think. Sorry I can't be of more help. Cheers, Tony - WTA

Hi, the clutch on our kia is exactly the same, soon as you lift your foot the car is off. It is also becoming harder to engage the gears and when in reverse it sometimes get stuck and hard to get out. Just wondering if it the clutch that needs replacing? Thanks

Hi there. It does sound like the same issue we had with our clutch on the Kia Rio, where the car would start to move as soon as you lift the clutch pedal. To be honest at first we thought it was the way that our Kia Rio drove, as it was a car that was new to us at the time, but it was down to one of Kia mechanics point it out so it may be worth getting it checked. @@wetryanythingchannel Hey Tony, after watching this video, I've ordered the clutch and going to give it a go. The gears seem fine when the car first started, it's once everything warmed up when it starts. Yes we haven't drove another kia so thought the clutch was normal. After speaking to garage today, it sounds like it is the clutch. Fingers crossed I don't make matters worse when I strip it down haha. Thanks

Do you still have this car? I was considering a Kia. Any problems with the DPF, or ad blue?

We do still have this car (owned it for over 4 years) and other than a slight clunk in the steering wheel it has been great so far. We have never really experienced any DPF related issues and as it is only a 2014 model it doesn't need adblue. To be honest, when my wife looks to change the Kia Rio for something else I will probably have it off her and part exchange my car. Really rate them! Cheers, Tony - WTA

2.5 YEAR LATER UPDATE BELOW Pretty common problems when I bought it the struts were already knackered in first 2 weeks the left wing mirror stopped working took it apart and the whole connector was corroded easy fix now since it’s getting hotter and hotter my pressure plates started sticking and couldn’t shift into any gear when the car was running so now it’s in the garage for a new clutch picking it up on Wednesday can’t wait to get it back Update after having the car for 2.5 years Check the fuel tank as they like to go rusty leading to a leak Check the radiator as they are poor quality and develop a leak Condensation in the front fog lights Check for driver creaking seat when wobling side to side If your airbag light shows up randomly check the the clock spring first Otherwise a very good motor 1.4 crdi is going strong now at 103000miles

Sorry to read about your issues with your Kia Rio but as you have mentioned they are pretty common problems and through experience all cars go wrong at one time or another. I just thought I would film the video to make people aware of some of the issues we have experienced with our Kia Rio so they can look out for them when they are potentially looking at one as their next car. It is still a great car and to be honest if we were ever looking to change it we would probably just get another one as we feel that it is a great car to own and all you would ever need. Don't blame you as they do make reliable cars. We still have the Kia Rio featured in the video and other than the initial problems that I had talked about in the video plus a pair of front tyres and brakes it has been trouble free for the last three and half years, which is great!
