Kia crossed center line of road and hit the rear axles on a boat trailer traveling opposite direction . Destroyed the boat trailer and totaled the Kia . Getting a lot of comments on how I loaded the trailer . Look up Dog Tracking before you stick your head in your ass . If I had loaded the trailer onto my truck with all for wheels on the bed of my truck the boat would have been hanging of the right side of my bed by 3 feet . I chose to load the boat onto the center of my truck and let the axles and tires hang off the side . For those complaining about the park pin get over it . No damage was done . I will say I am getting more views because of all the bitching though keep it up .

i drove a tow truck for 30 years, cant tell you how many cars have been dragged in park never hurt one. i believe he did the best he could do, and it is very helpful to drag in park at times. it makes the car follow the winch. i have even used blocks of wood to steer cars. as far as the wheels hanging off the trailer i would never allow or do this

1:18 This can be very dangerous if you dont know the load on the tongue. I watched a guy get his face smashed because he released it, not knowing the weight had shifted to the rear of the trailer after an accident. The trailer tongue came up so fast, he didn't have time to react.

He said hold the brake , throw it in park , which together should lessen strain on the parking pawl. It is a pawl, not a pin. More like a wedge in a notch, designed for high pressure. I use the combo every day with 10,000 lbs. Behind an f250 when loading and unloading. Done properly , presents no problems.

May I suggest you read other comments you find the one mainly discussing this topic and Hill answered in reply to another who replied, Simply put I have driven a few vehicles before realizing the e-park brake was on let alone not being able to move with the transmission in park, but never heard a story of how the transmission park got damaged from a simple tow. Not once of the two times I got towed in two different vehicles had the park pawl shown any sign of damage at all. Beside the transmission parking system is good for flat to slight hilly parking, you need to use the e-brake to really set the brakes on a hill and most importantly if its going to be parked a while you nest have a couple wheel chocks to really keep it in place.

NO FUCKIN SHIT YOU HAVE TO USE THE EBRAKE ON A STEEP HILL. WANNA KNOW WHY? Cuz you'll break the fucking parking paul, you can hear after the tow truck driver tells him to put in back in neutral and it doesn't happen right away is cuz the pickup driver cant physically move the shift lever because of the tension on the PARKING PAUL

When parking on my friends very steep driveway I'll apply the parking brake before taking it out of drive, then to neutral and take my foot off the brake to rest the cars weight fully on the applied parking brake, then to park, and that assures me there's no tension on the parking pawl and that it will easily shift out of park when I leave.
@bpetnoi1472

OK some real heated comments here. First the pawl locks the transmission which is connected to the drive line, via the differential and then the wheels and tires. If the driver of the truck keeps the brakes locked the tires will skid on the pavement if the truck is pulled hard enough to exceed the coefficient of friction between the rubber tires and pavement. It would never transmit any torque forces to the transmission pawl and therefore placing the truck in park is not necessary if the driver is applying the brakes firmly. In other words if the truck wheels are not rotating then the drive line is not rotating and no forces are placed on the transmission pawl. What I did find a bit stressing is the side ward pull put on the frame as he pulled the boat and truck "out straight". I agree with one commenter below that modern trucks have very flimsy frames as compared to much older trucks. Having said this, the maximum side ways forces seen on the frame is can be no greater than those produced up the point the rear tires slide side ways when they loose traction on the pavement. Think of a driver "drifting a car in great arcs where the rear wheels are sliding. There frames are not being bent as the forces holding the tires to the road as much less than a frame can with stand. Since the angle between the boat trailer and truck was slight it is hard to see if the tires slid sideways at all so it is hard to estimate forces placed sideways on the frame. Loading of the boat and trailer off center of the roll back is something I understand having worked a few years for a towing company. With the trailer axles bent and off center getting the trailer and boat on the rollback straight might have taken a very long time. The road is narrow, there seems to be a lot of traffic and the police would want the lane cleared as fast as possible. If anyone who viewed this video is the type of person who might go out and measure distance side to side to see if there vehicle was loaded dead center than they just don't understand the real world. SO TO FINISH UP. There is no danger of damage to the transmission pawl if the driver of the truck keeps the brakes locked preventing the rear wheels from rotating and in fact I see no reason why it would even be necessary to place the transmission in park. It would make sense if they were on a hill as if the trailer couple or tow bar should break then the truck would not roll away by accident if the driver forgot it was to say in neutral and forgot to put it in park before bailing out to see what was happening. Oh I do believe spelling and grammar is important and I try hard to get mine correct as if for nothing else it sort of says the writer took time to think about what they wrote instead of just firing back a hot a reply.

Wow, finally a new "Crab Steering" option for trailers. Last night at Walmart I saw a 4wd F350 which broke the left steering arm that attaches to the hub. The tow truck driver tried loading it front first but that LF tire just kept turning to the left so he had to load it from the rear. Thankfully it broke at low speed in a parking lot instead of on the highway.

That's not so far fetched. Many years ago my late business partner bought a small yacht we called it the 29 foot sloop style sail boat which is what it really was because this thing was heavy heavy it also had an inboard engine. We drove down to Maryland to get it and is was walking towed doggie crab style the day we picked it up it was pouring down rain the guy left it at the end of his driveway because my partner squared the deal away weeks before we got the time to go get the thing. We ended up at Firestone store near Philly after getting pulled over with the thing late that Sat. afternoon. The dude at the Firestone that tackled the problem was an ace. He undid the entire axle and all the U bolts used a sharpie marker with my partner holding the tape measure on the frame they relocated the axle as the mechanic explained the boat and the trailer had once been in an accident. They moved the axle beyond the tweek in the frame and used the tape measure to center the axle correctly. And it worked. I mean the Firestone charged us like $300.00 because they stayed open an hour after their closing time. But it was worth it instead of having the boat walking sideways going home.

All right, this is for all the nimschitz who are concerned about the parking pawl (not "paw" nor "Paul"). Because it's designed to lock the output shaft and securely hold the vehicle in place, it absolutely HAS to be robust. The shift lever cams the pawl away from the drum and when the lever is put in the park position, a spring holds the pawl against the drum. Once the pawl locks into a notch, it takes a huge jolt to pop it out of engagement. I have towed cars that were slammed into while parked and launched away from the original location by several yards. The tires didn't slide, they rolled. Guess what still worked. The parking pawl! Even though it had been knocked out of park with force far and away above anything seen in this video, the spring pulled the pawl back into the drum and stopped the car, holding it completely normally until I shifted it back out of park. I'm inclined to believe that the case would crack near the pivot point before the pawl would break. Just my opinion, based on experience and understanding the pawl. One more thing. I'm not going to bother with this but for the people who think that the transmission shops are making repairs of parking mechanisms (pawls, drums), spend some hours calling the shops and see how many vehicles get new drums and/or pawls.

To all the comments that he is dragging the truck in park, you can clearly hear him yell," put it in neutral brakes off" .Then he pulls and the truck and trailer move.Then when he stops pullin ,"'put it in park and hold brakes".The only time he pulled when the truck held brakes was when he used the trucks weight was to pull the trailer straight.

When the brakes are on, it does *not* matter if the transmission is in park or not. Same as it does not matter whether the transmission is in neutral, drive, or reverse, when the brakes are on. However if the brakes are *not* on, than the transmission in park protects the innocent bystanders from any potential stupidity of the potential nut behind the wheel of the GMC. If the GMC driver decides to leave his car with the brakes off, when told to have the brakes on, well tough luck.

sorry but I'm going to call BS on Mach . While the park pin may not be the best way to hold a vehicle in my experience the majority of vehicles emergency brakes are barely adequate when pulling in reverse . I have been in situations where the emergency brake will not hold on a steep hill but the park pin will . again not perfect but at times it may be all you have . I have never ruined a trany winching one in park . The majority of the wrecks we get the owners lock the car and take the keys . some we can get out of gear some we can't . I have had whiny little bitches complain about the damage we're doing to there cars winching them in park . Funny when they show up to retrieve their cars everything works just fine . The park pin is not designed to hold a car but for the most part it has an amazing ability to do just that . If I ever break one off i'll let you know .

And the reason I jump on these idiots is because maybe I was a victim of one these dopey slops towing something of mine. Now bite your tongue or your typing fingers or something. I grew up in the Northeast Modified Series so I of all people know how to upright a vehicle properly as to not cause damages. I for one came upon competitors that got hit run into on their way to and from the race track their trailers and tow vehicles crumpled up like cup cakes needing to be freed from the tow vehicle ect. This video exemplifies the fact some people should go into another line of work like these boobs in the video.

Whew, that's a nice boat and they're lucky it didn't get junked. Granted, there's probably damage one can't see on video, but it looks like the trailer took most of the force. Those are easily enough replaced and a hell of a lot cheaper than a boat. But, all involved are really lucky that it wasn't real bad... considering the road has no room to bail. Rock on one side and water on the other. They should go buy some lottery tickets, because they're lucky as hell.

Nice job. Rookie does need to slow down and watch but that will come with experience. Yes off centered but probably not over loaded. As a tow truck driver, just get it loaded and gone. Clear the road. Once again, well done.

My 2003 duramax had a coolant leak, where it would drip off the back of the block. Was told a head gasket, freeze plug, ect ect ect. Turned out to be the rubber O ring on the upper steel coolant hose, the one that connects to the thermostat housing. It will drip down into the valley of the motor and run down the back of the block.

Ben Bennett ... Disparage others who do what you can't qualify for. I tried to teach an old guy who drove a milk tanker prior to thinking he could operate a wrecker. He was used to driving to a few locations, over and over. Could not comprehend the fact that we HAVE to be able to find addresses all over the state. Once the car/truck/bike is located, the proper paperwork needs to be started and the vehicle assessed and properly loaded. Milkman couldn't grasp the concept that there's a whole bunch more to operating a tow truck than tossing a hook under a car and dragging it on board. Yesterday, I loaded a Mercedes Benz SLR and delivered it 50miles through 5 cities, to the dealer. Loading and unloading the thing was a delicate bit of finesse. Today, I was sent to a body shop to move a Dodge pickup from the middle of the lot to the frame machine. It had 3 wheels on the ground and the right front corner held up on a jackstand. Lower control arm broken through and the axle yanked free. The advisor preferred to have the truck nose first on the platform. Well, I slid my awesome JerrDan bed under the truck and set the frame on lumber with the front suspension about eighteen inches beyond the back end of the bed. Once it was secure to move, I squeezed the rig through the lot to the best angle toward the rack. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a straight line to the machine. With some help from the body techs, I managed to inch the truck into position. Working a few inches at a time, I eased the bed away and at the conclusion, the truck was positioned as well as if it had been driven onto the platform. When you complete a task that you know is beyond the capability of most drivers, it is a rewarding experience.

It sounds like you know what you're doing you probably have Heavy Haul and heavy recovery experience. Milk truck drivers will never work out on anything detailed they run 14 to 18 hours a day 7 days a week because cows never stop giving milk I work with liquid chemicals I have driven just about anything and everything out there run coast to coast and all the providences of Canada. I've never had a bad inspection. I run chemicals oil gases Etc... I respect the people that are professionals about their job you sir sound like a professional to me.

Ben Bennett ... Thanks for the compliment. I run in state, mostly central municipalities. The truck that I am assigned to is a light and lower weight medium range flatbed with a wheellift out back. If you take a little time to study what you want to accomplish, most times the truck is very capable of getting the job done. The reason I pointed out the two vehicles is because they required vastly different operation of the truck and both required finesse. George has a tremendous amount of experience, hence, expertise. He knows what needs to be done to accomplish the job. We differ on the methods but each one does what works. I'm one of those grammar nazis because correct usage equals clear communication. You are well written and I appreciate it. One tiny correction, if you don't mind, Canada has provinces. Your device probably over anticipated what you were writing and slipped "providences" into the line. A couple other very minor things. Certainly is no sin. Be well, live long and prosper.

boat is probably worth as much as the car, truck, and trailer, they hold their value, trailer would be galvanized in that environment and not a quick cheap galvanized, probably $2k-5k depending on age and capacity

You Do Not need or have to galvanize aluminum., its naturally rustproof/resistant, still galvanized steel is not better than stainless though the later is not as strong as the galvanized structural steel. From how easy it looked when he winched it and the way the neck of the trailer looks all bent it tells me from sight that its got to be aluminum about or a bit more than rustproofed steel but lighter weight. From what I looked up on the boat it seems like the basic model be it the 18 or 20 footer at best from how it sits on the deck of the flatbed/rollback.
@Eschelonistic
@Eschelonistic 7 жыл бұрын
Aluminium does indeed rust/oxidise albeit naturally. Which is why people anodise it, strengthens the alloy and hardens it in the process, that said most of the trailers are made from marine grade Aluminium. The biggest misconception regarding carbon steels that are then galvanised is well, they do rust after 20 odd years or so dependant on "habitat". Salt water really does not help, then many other variables and factors, such as the welding wire used, the gas used in the weld, whether the weld was then gal dipped or not.. the list goes on. Purely by the finish on the frame alone, it would be aluminium as no one would be grinding down a galvanised surface with carbonundum to get that paint job! (It looks like Natural finish anodisation)

The video ends with the driver walking towards the front of the truck and inspecting his load and chains, but it looked as though he could have gone back about four more feet therfore the front of the boat would not stick out so much and the weight of the boat would be equally displaced on the flatbed, the flatbed truck should have been wider so the boats trailer wheels won't stick over the rails on the flatbed, then you would have less risk of damaging the boat and it's trailer, not to mention scratching the flatbed.

I could tell that there was no way you would be able to disconnect the trailer from the hitch, but you could had disconnected the hitch from the truck, then once you pulled it in align with your truck it would had loaded easier. Still you made quick work of a difficult situation.

using the brakes would be 1000 percent better than ruining the parking mechanism
@joelschermerhorn5447
@joelschermerhorn5447 7 жыл бұрын
jsnjcnt He did have him use the brakes with the truck in park, and I heard him tell this to his helper several times. Applying the brakes while the truck is in neutral keeps the transmission from being damaged, and transfers the stress of pulling the vehicle to the winch, tires and brakes. Putting the truck in park was for a safety factor, so in case something went wrong while towing, additional damage could be avoided. Read more about how vehicles work, and you'll understand this concept better.

You're ignorant as fuck. You know why they tell you to use your parking brakes on a steep hill? SO YOU DONT BREAK THE PART THAT KEEPS THE VEHICLE IN PARK. NEVER PULL ON A VEHICLE THAT IS PARKED. "Oh well tow truck drivers do it all the time" no fuckin shit they do it all the time, they don't care about the peoples shit, the more tows and the faster they do it the more money they make, so if the keys are gone and its in park you can bet your ass they're gonna drag that bitch. They don't give a fuck.

Looks like an aluminum trailer with Al boat as well, wow not just a neck ache (bent busted tow frame) but two broken ankles (busted axle to wheel connection) on that trailer, definitely had girth on your flatbed. Boat was fortunate it did not get damage from what I could see.
@Joshua79C
@Joshua79C 7 жыл бұрын
Further though, I would have called in for a flatbed "rollback" trailer to haul the boat and trailer away if the other boat trailer was not available or possible at least until got back to the shop so the owner could have their boat back, unless insurance if they had it was not paying the ante for the bill or the customer was not able to pay for it themselves then it would remain on the trailer in the yard until the tow bill was compensated. With the flat deck trailer tow it would sit on nice and pretty but would crib up the busted side just for added safety.

I would not use steel on any boat trailer too much hassle to keep rust away even if powder coated as its ony protected on the outside, aluminum is stronger than you think and much lighter as the same time. Larger boats I would use a steel trailer seeing as the size would require a Marine Travelift to place in the water. Sail or motor boat. Many commercial haulers use aluminum trailers built specifically for hauling watercraft up to 40 feet long be it ramp launched or not, as their lighter weight means less weight to pull and heavier boat you can haul.
