People Simon's age (me included, I'm 29) still grew up in a time where it was dorky to be big into videogames, Pokémon, doing youtube videos, etc. That's why Simon doesn't realize hes actually part of the generation that made it cool to do this stuff, the younger generations think we are cool but when we were in school, we definitely were not considered cool lol but people like Simon weren't really bullied like some of the more "different" outcast kids, they were kind of just ignored (again, myself included lol).
