I really enjoy Kickmaster! It's definitely hard, but not impossibly hard. Through a lot of persistence, I did beat it when I was a kid. I remember the second level, The Caverns of No Return, creeped me out a bit. The in-game kick demonstrations were definitely helpful, and somewhat ahead of their time. I can't think of many NES games that did in-game tutorials like that; most just left it to the instruction manual. I think of Kickmaster as a hidden gem.

A few ways to fix the mechanics in this game, have short fire kick or a short energy wave attack that give the character longer reach of a attack. let the character gain exp no matter what, even if it's just 5 points or less, but he still have to grab the exp coins drop by the enemies. And maybe a shop merchant system, meaning a you gain money, but automatically gain them by defeating enemies. where you can spend the money on exp coins to lives and new skills at the shop.

It rare expamle when NES game have option meny with music test, so you can hear your lovely music without pyaling the game ) also this one of this game that have replayablity in form of loops. In each loop enemies become toughter. I played maybe on 5 loop max. Reavers (on first level) have so much health that I can't even kill them when they fall down on me.

The intro remindes me of another NES or SNES game that had a similar opening cutscene. I remember 3 skeletons in the cutscene and maybe the master died? the skeletons appeared tiny? it was also a side scrolling Ninja or fighting/combo game? anyone remember what its called.

The power ups flying around and forcing you to make a split second choice is definitely G.I. Joe-like as you said. $60 doesn't sound too bad for this game, I'll have to look into it. It kind of sounds like they had a bunch of ideas and tossed it together and ultimately hoped the game would attract people looking for some kind of in-between other Classic NES games.
