I begin by selecting a variety of handmade papers-some with textures, some with subtle patterns-and start tearing them intuitively. Torn paper art is not just about creating something beautiful; it’s a sensory experience. The sound of the paper ripping, the feel of the edges, and the unique shapes you create, all contribute to the process. As I piece together the collage with torn paper, I’m not just arranging colors and shapes; I’m also layering feelings and thoughts, which makes each ripped paper artwork truly one-of-a-kind.
The spontaneity of using torn paper encourages me to think outside the box. Each piece of paper is like a brushstroke, and I’m the artist in charge of the composition. The abstract mixed media art that emerges is vibrant-a vase of flowers that seems to move on the canvas. I add depth and shadow with a fine tip applicator with Prussian blue acrylic paint, which anchors the abstract mixed media art piece.
Why is this art exercise so beneficial? Well, it’s simple! This type of art exercises frees you from the pressure of perfection. The torn paper art technique is forgiving; it’s all about exploration and expression. Plus, the art challenge of completing a piece in just 15 minutes pushes your creativity to the forefront. It’s exhilarating!
I also love collage with torn paper because it's a great way to repurpose materials and incorporate a sustainable practice into my art-making. And by sharing this ripped paper artwork process with you, I hope to inspire you to see potential in the simplest of materials.
So, grab some paper, maybe a little paint, and join me in this abstract mixed media art adventure. Whether you’re new to art or a seasoned creator, this torn paper art exercise is a fantastic way to let your artistic potential loose and add a burst of creativity to your day. Don’t wait for the perfect day to create art. Every day is that day!
And remember, keep on painting and making your art!

Liked both paintings, especially the second. I warm up by sketching with an elegant writer marker on watercolor paper. When the marker lines get wet, they bleed out in a beautiful green blue and pink. Unpredictable but fun and occasionally get some nice little sketches

I love this Chris. I recently started a '100 paper paintings' project and have discovered many of the benefits you describe. A lovely warm-up, a great way to get into flow and a non-precious way to be bold and experiment with composition! I've been making all of my own collage papers with a gelli plate; which is another meditative process in and of itself!

Thanks so much, Ann! I've made some collage paper with my gelli plate, but I'm still pretty new to it. I make a lot of mistakes with monoprinting and those turn out to be wonderful for collage.

Your work is beautiful, and your guidance and encouragement are amazing. You inspire so many, and I'm so very grateful. I do gel printing and clean my brayer on copy paper (which I save); I will give this a go. Thanks so much!

Thanks for those kind words, Kathy! I've used many brayer papers as collage. They have so much character to them even though it's from cleaning and unintentional.

Hi Chris, I especially like that your paper pieces very "loosely" resemble the shapes you want to represent. I am reminded to not overly control this stage as it puts the rest of the work into a straight jacket.

Thanks Ann! It's so easy to start getting detailed when doing this exercise and that usually throws it off for me. Tearing the paper usually keeps me from having too much control and keeps it with a more natural look❤️

Hi Chris, lately I have seen several artists having to remove old bits of collage that were wax paper/greaseproof paper that had once been their mixing palettes and some time on, were now lifting at the edges although they had glued them down exactly the same as the rest of the collage pieces. Do you have any ideas on this? I would hate to gift/sell a piece of work and for bits to start lifting years down the line. Superb videos by the way!
@chrisloudart
@chrisloudart 6 ай бұрын
Thanks so much, Nicola! Great question! I probably wouldn't use wax paper in finished pieces that I would sell or give away. With that said, I use gel medium on these and typically cover the wax paper with another coating after the initial layer has dried. So far, so good...I haven't had any issues with it coming up. I don't use wax paper as my pallet anymore since I got a non-stick palette. I can just peel the acrylic skins off now and use those.

That’s a great idea! I am a newcomer to painting and completely over excitable about how many ways there are to add texture and various marks, so the idea of using acrylic skins is definitely going on my to do list - Thank you!
@chrisloudart

@@cola6986 There really are so many ways to create texture. It gets kind of addicting! You'll have a lot of fun playing with acrylic skins. I use them a lot for both texture and a nice pop of color.
