I begin by selecting a variety of handmade papers-some with textures, some with subtle patterns-and start tearing them intuitively. Torn paper art is not just about creating something beautiful; it’s a sensory experience. The sound of the paper ripping, the feel of the edges, and the unique shapes you create, all contribute to the process. As I piece together the collage with torn paper, I’m not just arranging colors and shapes; I’m also layering feelings and thoughts, which makes each ripped paper artwork truly one-of-a-kind.
The spontaneity of using torn paper encourages me to think outside the box. Each piece of paper is like a brushstroke, and I’m the artist in charge of the composition. The abstract mixed media art that emerges is vibrant-a vase of flowers that seems to move on the canvas. I add depth and shadow with a fine tip applicator with Prussian blue acrylic paint, which anchors the abstract mixed media art piece.
Why is this art exercise so beneficial? Well, it’s simple! This type of art exercises frees you from the pressure of perfection. The torn paper art technique is forgiving; it’s all about exploration and expression. Plus, the art challenge of completing a piece in just 15 minutes pushes your creativity to the forefront. It’s exhilarating!
I also love collage with torn paper because it's a great way to repurpose materials and incorporate a sustainable practice into my art-making. And by sharing this ripped paper artwork process with you, I hope to inspire you to see potential in the simplest of materials.
So, grab some paper, maybe a little paint, and join me in this abstract mixed media art adventure. Whether you’re new to art or a seasoned creator, this torn paper art exercise is a fantastic way to let your artistic potential loose and add a burst of creativity to your day. Don’t wait for the perfect day to create art. Every day is that day!
And remember, keep on painting and making your art!
