Wow, there is a lot of things to consider. My son and I have a game we created. We have made our pieces and we have been playing it. It is a very good game. We plan to play test it this weekend with someone else for the first time. But, I am trying to figure out where to go next. What is the next step? He wants to put it on kickstarter...we are going to have to figure all this out. We don't have a lot of money. I have no idea where to get a "prototype" made. We have our homemade pieces, which is a good start. Watching your video presents a lot of information and I'm already feeling overwhelmed. lol

For anyone asking the same questions in the future: The next step to "home testing" is to bring your game to associations, events and shops. This will for sure bring a lot of rework and fine tuning to your project. Along side the game play improvements try also to improve the prototype quality, so that it will resemble a more finished product fortunately, removing some bias for the tester. Make sure to remember that not all aspects of games are objective, some folks will have different taste then yours and will be harsh, try to filter the constructive criticisms and to find the right crowd to test your game with. There is a big difference between German boardgame fans and party game fans. Then when you feel like the time is right consider crowdfunding or to pitch your project to some editors.

How do you prevent others from stealing your idea/game if you put it out there before it’s live for playtesting, etc.?

Hi, I would like to ask how do you prevent people from copying your game? Do you have to register the copyright, patents and stuff? If so, how do it? Thanks.

Hey so I know that at least in the US when you create something you’re pretty much automatically protected by copyright. My understanding is that trademarks give you extra legal protection over your IP (intellectual property). I guess technically you could patent something in a board game but I don’t think board games typically get patented

Do you offer consultations? Because I am in the beginning stage and just starting to learn about logistics. And would love some advice.

So if I made a 25,000 dollar ks board game, and found out the shipping rates has increased to a point i can't deliver the game, what do you do? I'm asking for a freind.

Which is better? Back games on kickstarter or buy them in retail stores?

Typically I’d say Kickstarter. As a consumer I think you can get games a bit cheaper, sooner, and get extra stuff too! Plus you get the sense of achievement for helping make the game a reality. I believe the developers get more money too if you buy on Kickstarter instead of retail. But if you want to support your local game store, then do that for sure!

I’m a 16 year old student with a great game idea. I’ve spent 100+ hours designing and testing it and it’s almost done being tweaked to perfection. My idea was to make it complicated and have many layers but at the same time make it not seem nerdy so it would appeal to non-geeks. It’s 4-6 players so I got together some friends and family. Some were teenage girls(the demographic who hates board games) which I did on purpose because I wanted to see if I could appeal to everyone. We played and everyone loved it a lot despite it’s complexity. I never thought I could get people who hate board games and have no attention span to play it for 8 hours straight and love it, but I did. Everyone I’ve played it with really wants to see it become something but I have no idea where to start. My dream is to be an entrepreneur so if I could actually turn it into a source of income I’d love it. I don’t even have a prototype built and am confused on how to manufacture it. I’m determined but unfortunately my immediate family isn’t super supportive and would rather me get a regular job now. I need some help.

I think I’ll try your coaching thing. I gotta get a lot of money saved and invested this summer before my parents allow me to spend $167 though.
