katsudon is seen as a "victory food" because of the pun (katsu=win, but also pork cutlet), so moms make katsudon before exams or competitions so that the kid wins. so the tv trope is that police officers in a kinda good cop bad cop routine offer the suspect a nice warm bowl of katsudon, reminding them of their moms, and they break into a tearful confession
