Mexico has cut all diplomatic ties with Ecuador after Ecuadorian police officers forcibly raided the Mexican Embassy in Quito and detained former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas. Glas had been granted political asylum by Mexico earlier that day amid intensified political persecution against him. Andrés Arauz, former Ecuadorian presidential candidate and a research fellow at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, discusses the brazen violation of Mexican sovereignty and the ongoing political persecution Latin American progressive governments and the former officials of those progressive governments are facing.

As a mexican I appreciate your solidarity for Mexico. We mexican have so much respect for our latin brothers and sisters and are very welcome to our country,it is against the ecuadorian goverment that violated the Viena convencion on the law of treaties. Mexico has to set a precedent for the world because otherwise there will be other countries that would do the same thing.

Ecuador broke international law, namely the Vienna Convention which grants embassies the status of territory of the country to which belongs. Without respecting this international agreement we would be subject to the force. A note, Assange was not kidnapped, the government of the former president of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, handed him over and gave permission to the British authorities to enter for him. I hope that Mexico's complaint in the International Court proceeds favorably because it would set a precedent both for the case of Israel and Ecuador, and for future cases that may occur if another crazy man thinks he can attack embassies freely.

All the countries in the Americas declared backing Mexico in this issue with the only exception of El Salvador, which voted abstention. Many other states worldwide also backed Mexico, including the European Union, for instance. Noboa dared to do something not even the worst of dictators ever attempted, this is something unheard of. Mexico is taking the case to the UNO, the International Court of Law, etc. As a Mexican I support the government of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador a 💯 percent in the actions it has taken.

I have seen a few comments asking why my country didn't just declare war on Ecuador outright for what they did. The answer is very simple for those versed in Latin American politics: 1) Mexico and many Latin American nations consider one another to be brethren countries - this is owed to some extent to our shared native Amerindian ancestry among our populations; it will literally take acts of extreme hostility resulting in the loss of life to our fellow co-nationals to get us to openly engage in war. It's similar to the inherent sense of connectivity between european, african, asian, middle eastern, ameridian, and latin american born diaspora living in the US in relation to their ancestral country of origins. 2) We acknowledge for the majority that the Ecuadorian citizenry had no say in the actions of the sitting president and for the majority dislike the man in office as much as we do. 3) We aren't inherently a bellicose nation, we will use whatever diplomatic means available to us to solve discourse amongst our brethren nations before resorting to war. That isn't to say that we won't fight hostile elements with extreme prejudice when sufficiently provoked. 4) We recognize the potential backing of the US government in the decision undertaken by Noboa; he is after all a US Born Citizen. You might wonder why that would matter if I mentioned that many of the diaspora born in the US have a sense of connectivity to their ancestral country - the answer is simple: Assimilation and tribalism. While diaspora may have an ancestral connection to a particular country, it is not inherently as strong a connection as those born in that nation. This means that when push comes to shove the diaspora in the US will fight predominantly for the interests of the country they were born and raised in over their ancestral country of origin. Even many foreign born citizens who spent sufficient time in a particular country due tend to adopt sympathetic dispositions to that nation and in many instances will work for the interests of said nations over their birth nation.

Jorge Glas is literally being charged with executing infrastructure projects that the prosecutor deems non-priority projects. The charges are that weak and ridiculous, and haven't even been tested in court. Glas has had prior (dubious) convictions, but was already out on parole for those.

parole was denied and he was ordered back to jail to finish his sentence, that is when he ran to hide in the mexican embassy. also he granted contracts for the infrastructure projects upon receiving money from the company that was supposed to execute those contracts. Also pocketed money allocated to rebuild the area destroyed by the 2016 earthquake. i'd say glas is where he should be, and hopefully remains there until the last minute of his sentence.

You all are "forgetting" or omitting that Jorge Glas is a criminal with a sentence in place. He is not a free man. He was required to attend to the authorities once a week when he got out of jail. Instead, he seeks asylum at an embassy evading the Ecuadorian Justice. The Mexican Embassy was being used to shelter criminals.

The only interventionist country here is Mexico (As they have already done w Peru and Bolivia, where their ambassadors have been kicked out). Nothing to do with the US. The Ecuadorian government did what is best for Ecuadorians. Jorge Glas is not persecuted for his politics. Many of his former colleagues w similar views have been elected and currently work in the ecuadorian government. Glas is persecuted because he has been sentenceed and found guilty to be a thief and a corrupt politician.

Yo escuche otra versión y tu otra, solo escuchamos, realmente no nos consta porque no vimos ni estuvimos ahí en primer fila o si??...algunos gobiernos han fabricado "cosas ", quizás este sea un caso, no me consta, pero tampoco lo dudo, y Ecuador no ha sido la excepción, ya se ha escuchado decir de fabricar supuestas crímenes, lo han dicho mucha gente ecuatoriana...

No se de dónde sacaste esa información, pero si te decides por dar alguna opinión antes tomate la molestia de informarte bien, porque no se si sepas, pero, existe la Convención de Viena sobre el derecho de los tratados, ahí hay un artículo donde dice bien claro que bajo ningún motivo se debe allanar ninguna embajada, y si México hubiese violado los estados de Perú y Bolivia, ya se hubiese sancionado, y a la fecha no ha pasado nada, y sin embargo a Ecuador si se le sancionó!!, entonces para ti todos están mal??? Jajajajajajaj

is not a kidnapping when the person has been tried and is a convicted criminal and was ordered to go to prison. He was not a free man like this idiot here is saying. glad glas is where he needs to be serving his sentence until the last minute. and i hope the other fugitive criminal in Belgium gets caught soon.

The main point is that Ecuador is breaking the international rules and now the population will pay been excluded of all the international organisms. USA is its support and that means Ecuador gave them its soveragnity, now USA has a military base with 1,200 soldiers, this goes beyond. Kidnapping Glas matters but, is not the international point. Ecuador asilated Julian Assange and agreed venefits with Englush and Americand governments to give Assange back to England and the Ecuadors goverment, did it. So, Ecuador has been taken as a military base and usa and uk do not care about people. This goes further. Have a nice day!

@@somoscosmos9695 l'm not an expert, but some international law analysts are also saying that Mejico should not be giving amnesty to a tried and convicted criminal, therefore braking the same international rules you are referring to. Noboa could have waited until glas was out of the embassy to arrest him, but as the saying goes "mas vale un pajaro en mano...", Don't understand your babbling about a military base, but there is no american military base in Ecuador at the moment, the other fugitive criminal in Belgium closed it up while he was president. It will be a good thing if it will reopen to help mitigate the drug cartels. All in all both countries may have broken some international laws, nothing is going to happen to Ecuador or its people, but the end result is positive. A criminal is in jail where he should be until the last minute of his sentence.
