KIDS CHORES | Easy Age Appropriate Chore Ideas for 2, 3, 4 and 5 Year Old's | Kid's Chore Routine

OH YEA! I'm back today with a talking-head video all about my kid's "CHORES!" I debated inserting clips of my kids actually doing said "chores," but I really feel that I should TRY to keep my kids out of my videos (even though they sneak in once in a while... those stinkers!)
As I mention in the video, we don't have an actual "chore system" or "list" for our kids. However, I do ask them for help with things I'm already doing, and they actually get excited for it! So as long as this is the case, I'm going to teach them and let them go hog wild!
Something I didn't mention is that there are lots of things they help with, and it might seem like, "Gee! That's a lot for little kids to do!" But, we feel that everything is age appropriate and again, we are still TEACHING them at this age. We're not super strict parents, and don't DEMAND anything of them. Sometimes when I ask for help, they'll say, "no thank you," and that's OK. The only thing they MUST do, is clean up their toys & clothes (after changing). We don't yet have consequences for failure to do the "chores," except when I "throw away," (aka hide) the toys they don't pick up.

I love you family economy concept! In our house chores are called responsibilities. My 8 year old is expected to put her clean laundry away, unload the dishwasher (except for the sharp knives and the items she can’t reach their storage space), pick up all the toys in her room and the living room, make her bed, and take any dirty dishes from around the house to the sink.

We call chores “your responsibility as part of our family.” My 10 year old knows (and still fights at times) but I do need to get my 2 year old more involved. Thank you for the younger kiddos laundry tips. It frustrates me when she “helps” so we’ll start on shorts!

Oh yea! As I say, it's never perfect, and often their helping stresses me out and makes more mess for me, but I'm learning to let go of perfection and be patient as they learn!

when I was a kid we had a list of things that needed doing and if we did them we marked it on the chart and each thing had a price attached. so making a coffee was 2p, hoovering was 10p, cleaning the bathroom was 15p and so on. at the end of the week/month my dad added up the ticks and we got pocket money (allowance) for the tasks completed. it was great! we did the same with our kids. My house was clean and the kids learned that doing jobs got money and everyone was happy :)

A good alternative to allowance for kids is Dave Ramsey smart money smart kids concept of kid commission. It would marry well your home economy system.

I will definitely look into this. The biggest reason we don’t do allowance right now is because my kids don’t understand the value of money. In kindergarten this upcoming school year my son will start to learn, but for now they know the difference between a quarter and a dollar. And they think money still grows on trees. 🤦🏼‍♀️ So until they understand money we don’t feel the need to give it to them. I’ll definitely look into this program though.

i recently became a step mom - one year ago - and am so stuck in the middle of two birthparents who dont have any chores for their/ our 9 year old - it is so not how i was raised and i see so many missed opportunities for learning valuable life skills and lessons - but have no say in the matter (currently) ack!

Kids that are 2-3 love to help clean! That’s when I started my kids too. My kids first chore has always been putting away the silverware. My 3.5 year old LOVES to unload the dishwasher. I let him do everything they goes in the lower cabinets. My kids also love to help put dirty clothes in the washer. I have taught my 6 and 9 year old to do it by themselves. (We don’t use bleach typically). My kids do have a checklist that I expect them to do each day. I also recently started zones for them. We are rotating weekly and they have a variety of tasks. I have daily tasks and weekly tasks. The weekly ones I assigned to specific days to spread it out. I love it because it is forcing me to teach them how to do a variety of things. As you said I want them to know all the things that go into maintaining a household and I think this is really helping! Our zones are kitchen, living room & laundry, entry ways, car, and bathrooms.

This is great advice! I have a 3 year old and a 2 month old, but the older one is always refusing to clean up (even when his toys have a home)

Keep at it. It really does take patience and practice. We would clean up before every meal, before leaving the house and before bed. It still took months/years for them to 1. Be able to do it 2. Make it a habit

I’ll look into this!! We mostly don’t do allowance because our kids don’t understand money yet. My son starts to learn about dollar bills in school this year, but as for now he doesn’t even know the value of a dollar, or a quarter. (They think money grows on trees) Once they learn that will probably have to start doing some thing. This Dave Ramsey thing sounds interesting!

So I have a 9 year old who literally sleeps with 6 blankets and he WANTS them bundled up under him, I have had SO MUCH trouble getting him to make his bed because its "HOW HE LIKES IT". Any tips?

Oof, I've got nothing I'm sorry. Maybe teach him to fold each in half, and then roll it? that might look better than bunching🤷🏼‍♀️ I kept bedding to a minimum (top sheet, thicker comforter) to make it easier for my kids to make, and I sewed a DIY zipper bedding for my son's bunk bed to help him make his bed.

I know I'm late to the party for your comment, but it could be a sensory need for your child to have this many blankets and to have them bundled under him in that way. I'm sure it is difficult for him to make his bed this way. I would suggest to either pick your battles and let him try to get the bed as neat as possible with the blankets as they are (as long as he knows how to make a bed comfort and needs are important too) or keep a large basket at the end of his bed. In the morning he can toss these extra blankets into the basket and put them back in the bed at night.
