Words are cheap and easy, actions take effort and commitment. Unfortunately Charles was doomed for failure from the second he was born because of hundreds of factors that would of required him to excel and rise above them in order to succeed. Really sad in this day and age.

@misskys1 - You are very right. Re-entry is a huge issue and we will be covering that a lot more in the future. Support, hope and opportunity are all key. We honestly don’t even know what the situation was with dad for all we know he was in jail too. Whether mom and dad are together or not too many black fathers have decided not to be active in their kids lives. He DID want to change. But keep in mind the racial atmosphere 25 years ago in Indiana. This system is Really designed to keep people of color down. The whole damn constitution needs an over haul. We are working on laws and bi laws that were created 300 years ago. 300 years ago...the constitution was written with no regard to people of different race, religion, or creed. How can rules and laws written 300 years ago.... Legally still apply.... One love to all people who've been railroaded by a system that was stacked against you from the beginning.

@enzigenes - you bring up a very valid issue regarding re-entry to society. The vast majority of prisoners WILL get out some day. The question is, what type of person do we want when they do -- a person who has spent that time bettering him/herself with education, programs and counseling, or a person who (as you say) has not had any services whatsoever behind bars. When punishment is the only option and goal, we're missing a much bigger picture. We appreciate you watching and commenting!

@@CalamariProductions Without the proper immplement programs it is very hard. I am speaking about inmates who deserve a second chance. There are some who deserve that second chance at making it right. Then again, there are some who don't deserve a second chance.

I worked in the prison system for a lengthy period and on my first day on the job I noticed something; a big majority of inmates have mental health illnesses. The government tackled the pandemic well, but is not doing much for psychosocial disabilities.

​@@CalamariProductionsthe problem comes from the American prison system being more about making money than rehabilitation. Private prisons make money for every prisoner they house. I remember seeing a video of a prisons staff team on strike because the prison didn't have enough inmates

Man stop it the kids or adults got to wanna make a real change first. I know a lot of hard heads that did 10 plus come home and been model citizens since their release. There ae stuff in prison for them to learn but like i said that person has got to want to really change

I can tell he doesn't really respect her. I sense that she had him early in life and failed him in many ways. She's already looking for her 18 year old son to "take care" of her fresh out of prison. He was doomed from the start, but I doubt anything changed once he got home.

Amazing how easily fooled some people are, when it prison you've got all the time in the world, boredom sets in so you learn, you get educated, you do what you need to do to get out, for most the goal is freedom and if it means doing something you don't really want to do but might lead to an earlier release you do it. You've nothing else to do with your time. There's killers in jail that'll 'll teach other inmates, study the bible, offer help to everyone, be a model prison for 10, 15 years, impress everyone including the parole board. Get released and almost immediately seek a bloody revenge.

What landed him back in was him being released to the same toxic environment and peers and Colt lundy mentioned when he got out that it wasn't easy to readjust, that some jobs didn't want him because of his past etc. So that mightve been what it was like for Charles.

Judge Taliaferro was a remarkable woman. Many kids and families later thanked her for changing their lives. Sadly, she recently passed away after a long battle with Alzheimers. We are happy to report that DeLena has worked hard to turn her life around and has done very well since the time of this filming. On another sad note, her second son, Sage, died in an accidental gun incident over a year ago. Tragic, all the way around.

For everyone that’s bashing Charles’ mother for saying she wants him to take care of her, the interviewer said “He told me earlier he wants to take care of his mama”, then she basically said she’d let him. 5:21 I’m sure that was one of the reasons he gave to the board to be released. They ALL do. Which is normally a lie, just to get out. Within seconds, he wanted her to carry his box and do for him, rather than taking care of her.

It's normal in most cultures for the children, especially the eldest boy, to be financially responsible for his mother. Normally, this pushes young men to be responsible, and they are far less likely to commit crimes. So the issue is not about single mothers and more to do with bad role models, poverty and poor community resilience.

They just did the programs to get out. They will do anything to get out. I went to juvenile and group homes because of my mom not wanting me after I stole candy from a store at 13 1/2 5 months from being 14. I ended up going to 3 group homes and completing the programs for almost 4 years and she still didn't want me. At home my sister at 3 was being MOLESTED by my mother's boyfriend id come home on weekend trips and my sister told me so I told my mom a d she said I was causing problems. Finally my mom took my baby sister to hospital and it turns out was right. I told my counselor at the group home a d they called cps on my mom s d that's the only reason she took my baby sister. I got out on my 18th birthday and still wasn't wanted. 30 years past and I begged to be in her life. My sister left my mom and her husband that raised my sister to our father's at 12 years old. I'm 13 years older than my sister she was born on October 11, 1984 and I was born October 28,1971. Now that my mom is 70 she is begging me to be in her life. All this time of not feeling wanted or even loved. No birthday party or friends over no taking me out to pick out clothes for school. No feeling that I belonged. I got on drugs after having 2 children and then got clean and sober and have been since 2007. I was nearly murdered in April of 2007 I was stabbed multiple times. The suspect was arrested and stayed in jail till his trial then was found guilty of premeditated attempted murder and 6 other felony charges and was sentenced to 22 years in prison and had a release date for August 2026 but I'm 2020 in high desert prison he was stabbed to death while fighting 2 inmates he died later that day. There were other attacks and stabbing and killings l related in other prisons tied to the guy who tried to kill me. I'm still without a mother she left California in December of 2019 I'll probably never see her again. Never hold her hands while walking through Walgreens or Walmart. Just spending time with her. She moved to Missouri vendor Colorado then to Wyoming where she lived with her husband who treats her poorly and used to beat her and then verbally abusive I would buy her groceries and he'd find out I did it and throw them away. My mom talking bad about me to him back fires because he hates me too for sticking up for my mom and she tells him she wants me in her life and he put a stop to that for 30 years. I'm 51 and just since 2019 she has been calling to have a relationship but I can't bring up my hurts she caused or she'll say I'm making her have a nervous breakdown. It's hard. I have a fiancee I've been with for 12 years who's also clean and sober and treats me like a Queen. I love her very much. We support each other. We attend AA or NA and do groups on the Internet like international marathon meetings which are so cool because you hear how someone across the world handles drug addiction and alcohol addiction. We get tips on how someone might do differently. I love my mom but she kicked me out the family when I was almost 14. So from a child to 51 I have lots of hurts and mental pain.

@seanharris2985 - you are right about the negative forces that often greet kids again the minute they're released. It can be a vicious cycle. Many kids have told us they see no hope and no opportunities in their future. Sadly, that can be a recipe for returning to the system. We always hope for the best, and hope that somewhere following release they find at least one person who shows them there's a different path. I was thinking hed be back for a serious offense, just not as bad as murder. 147 years. He sealed his fate. But he had his chance and killed someone. His own damn fault!

He didn't want to change. If he did he got chances to do so. He could've gotten in school or went to the military and got a better life and away from the ghetto. He made the choice to murder an innocent person. It's sad but we need harsher sentences and start charging the kids parents and guardians. I changed my life from being in juvenile hall for stealing from a store and mom not wanting me. I got out on my 18th birthday. I did my best and still wasn't good enough for her. And now I'm 51 and she's begging for me to be in her life now.

Black women need to stop spreading their legs everywhere and having 20 different baby daddies. They need to break the cycle and stigma and have some self respect.

He played the system and did what was needed to get out, toed the line and used his prison time wisely to give the right impressions. Classic manipulator and prisons are literally full of them, it's what gets them locked up in the first place

I know that my kid went on a crazy hiatus and it had nothing to do with what I taught him.... Thank God he's moved past that... But it definitely had nothing to do with me or how he was raised.
