My maternal grandmother once gave both my dad and me a letter tray, a pair of wool socks, and a pair of black nylon dress socks. She gave my mom a sundae kit. We had to feign happiness, then my mom took her aside and said just give us money from now on. My grandmother argued that was too impersonal, but my mom said not really; we could go out and buy ourselves whatever we want and say it came from her, since she paid for it. My grandmother relented and just gave us money from then on.

My dad gave me a labtop box. He said we didn't have enough to buy the labtop and i smiled at gim and hugged him. He started crying. I told him that it was alright that i didn't need one. That being with them on christmas was enough. About an hour later he came into my room and held up the labtop and said with a smile. "You've been really good. You deserve this." He handed it to me and I started sobbing telking him to take it back. We didn't have the money. That day was an emotional rollercoaster
