I love this video! When I was in school I was praised by my English teachers for being so good at writing (I'm 34 now). My 11th grade teacher said he wanted to see me go to college for writing. I never did though because I was unsure about going, but I never forgot those words. I recently started learning art, and to help give myself some direction I decided to write out a backstory for my character. While jotting down a quick synopsis (and getting way more detailed than I meant to), I realized that somewhere along the way I had convinced myself that I didn't like writing. This of course was quite a shock to me, as it had always been my greatest skill. But since then it's been simmering in the back of my mind to write a novel. And this video has become the motivation I needed to actually take it up and JUST. START. WRITING. Thanks so much!

That's fantastic! Thanks so much for letting me know that, comments like this are the reason I make these videos. I had a similar story to you (I'm also 34!) and I'd dabbled in writing when I was younger, but dismissed it for a while, thinking I should be more practical. I wish I'd leaned into it when Iwas younger BUT - I still can, I still do, every day. I love that this gave you the motivation to get started, I wish you the absolute best of luck 😀

Hey man, thanks for this. Been writing every day for the past three weeks and I have 14,000 words to show for it. Some days it just flows, others, I feel that my writing is shit. But I keep at it, and now I'm really optimistic about how my book is turning out. Been writing on and off since 2016 and never actually finish anything, but this time, I will.

Thanks for watching! I get that too, definitely have times where it just won't happen, but the good times roll around again eventually. Writing takes a lot of sticking-to-it, even beyond the point where it still makes sense to do! Finishing stuff is important. I'd say prioritise finishing over all else. Having to fix a finished and imperfect story is a different feeling altogether that getting stuck halfway with loads of different ones. You've got it! 😀

It's a fantasy novel about a dwarven brewery that gets ransacked, and the quest to build it back and recover the four elements of brewing beer: Water, Hops, Barley, and Yeast. Should be available for preorder in August if you wanna check it out! =)

I started right before watching this video, and yes, I stopped to look for some advice. The advice. Don't stop to look for advice. Keep writing. It's my first time writing. I decided to go for a one shot. It's a small scene of a conversation of two characters that are in the middle of a party, a little romance, a little drama, a little sensuality. I felt that if I ever was going to be able to express through writing I had to go for the expression of the complicated human heart at first. Now I have to find a forum or a community where to share it and have some feed back, so if anyone's down ^^

The thing that got me writing after years of "one day" and "when I have the time" was the George RR Martin and Stephen King conversation where Martin asked how King writes so many books. King replies that he writes six pages a day. That's it. Simple. I thought about it and said - well, I don't think I have time to write six pages, but I could write two or three. Heck, one page a day is 365 pages a year - that's a book right there! After that, I started writing and it has ebbed and flowed and is not steady, but I have written three novels now (which I'm still working on trying to hone) and I am so glad I started writing again. King has since been an inspiration for me on many levels. I don't always agree with what he says or the advice he gives, but I can relate to a lot of what he says and will always be grateful that I stumbled on that discussion he and Martin had.

You might have already seen it, but I just released another Stephen King video this week that might be of interest. Your approach really speaks to me, that's how I am too. Yeah it's a lot of work, but you can get there by doing what you can manage, when you can manage it.

Everyone has a story to tell is my theory.

Ive got a bunch of stories outlined from start to finish but was scared to try. Now im going, i legit believe I'll be 1 of the 30 of the 1000 who start, to finish. Would like to make a couple of notes that I've heard, and hopefully it inspires others to get started with their own writing (I take no credit for these): 1) Similar to what was stated at 0:10 , a digital artist once said, "The reasons of why I want to draw are more powerful than the reasons of why I don't." Just replace the word "draw" with "write." 2) This one probably stuck with me the most: "Basically I tell myself, 'If I don't tell this story, then it'll never be told.' Which is very true - no one will tell your story like you do. Your characters won't act or think the same way if someone else writes the story."

Thank you lots for making this video and putting it out there. ive always been interested in writing and used to write short stories and poems as a tween. but i never developed my writing or took it too seriously. I'd always either put it off for later or just be too chicken to begin. Even juswriting comments under videos i enjoy has been something i wasnt able to do. i'd type out a paragraph and then just slam the backspace button, because i was sure that my words hold no value and don't add anything to the conversation. i'm slowly learning to change that, and this comment is a small contribution towards that effort. i wish the best of luck to everyone in this comments section with their writing endeavours.

You know, I do the exact same thing with KZfaq comments. I can’t seem to leave one without backspacing it. Your words do hold value though, and you should absolutely tell the stories you feel like telling! It’s difficult to push through that mental boundary, but if you can do it, it’s so worth it. I've written plenty of those myself! I thought they were a waste of time, but there's no such thing in writing. Every word you get down can teach you more about the craft. Hope the short stories go well! I love writing short fiction personally. It's a whole different feeling.

Thanks for the important reminder! This applies so well to my uni dissertation, which in the end of the day is exactly the same as any other story. So much prep has happened to reach this stage, and it's like there are a million hands pulling me away from the edge of the diving board - "you haven't sorted your argument coherently", "you need to read through the data more", "make sure you don't go down the wrong track". So today I will jump in and see what happens, and then go from there. I'll come back in a few days. Good luck with your writing everyone!

I've been endlessly planning a show concept for years because I was too scared to just start writing. I'm a terrible writer but honestly I'm going to start writing instead of waiting until everything I've thought of is perfect. I hope I go full on with this thank you for telling me that I should start and shouldn't be afraid of mistakes.
@KierenWestwoodWriting
@KierenWestwoodWriting 5 ай бұрын
Firstly, I bet you're not terrible at all. Second, every word you get down makes you a better writer, so there's no wasted words. It's really really hard to write through perfectionism, I feel that myself in a big way, but it can be done. Your mistakes help you become a better writer, they're like little boosts in progress that fill in gaps for you. If you can learn to stop seeing them as 'I'm bad at this' and instead see them as 'great, I just learned ______' it can help you ease that mental pressure a bit. Good luck! Don't forget to have fun and don't judge yourself!

I've been thinking about what some key initial story points will be in my story, but this video helped me realize that the thoughts I'm having about the decision are the same thoughts that my protagonist will have and I DO need to just write it because if I figure it out before hand then I'll probably just gloss over indecisiveness and anxiety that I want my character to feel. So, thank you. I'm going to just start writing and see where my fingers take me!
@KierenWestwoodWriting

That's an interesting observation! I think there's definitely value in you discovering the story as your character does. A lot of writers do that. Definitely give it a go and see where it takes you.

Great video! I loved the "putting on the armor" analogy; I helped me realize that this fear of judgment about what I write and of being terrible at something to begin with is really no different than all the other times I did stuff that scared the absolute crap out of me, but I did it anyway, because courage, as they say, is not feeling no fear about the thing, it's doing the thing in spite of it.
@KierenWestwoodWriting

I couldn't agree more! Absolutely the right way to look at it I think. The fear is a temporary state of discomfort and that's a worthwhile investment I think :)

Man, thanks for this video I actually wrote something for the first time. I mean, not really. All the writing I used to do since 2021 was by roleplaying with friends. And sure, it was fun, but I always wished to do something more. Like write actual pieces, as a little hobby besides drawing. But I always got insecure about my abilities and compared myself to my writer friends. Today I wrote a scene between some of my characters, with around 760 words. And sure it isn't a lot, but to me it's a meaningful start. My writing of course ended up very shitty- lol. But I don't care, I kinda had fun and I know this is just the beginning, so I can't just expect to be writing like Shakespeare. Pluuus English is not my first language. Thank you so much, today I made it be day one!
