Want to improve your trail building? Build that smooth jump? Perfect finish?
These are some of my TRAIL TOOL HACKS that I frequently use to get the best results!
I've put together some of my own personal HACKS that I find great to use to get that polished SMOOTH FINISH whilst building jumps, and also some greta TECHNIQUES and STYLES that may help make your day of trail and jump building just that LITTLE BIT EASIER!
I go through the HACKS one by one, in DETAIL and how to do it in SIMPLE steps and what TOOLS you can use and how to achieve the BEST RESULTS!

Buy a pack of m10 and m8 nylock bolts and swap all the bolts on your barrow. Also, grease the axle bolt before use and you'll never have a squeaky barrow to reveal you secret spot.

If your digging into the ground a lot, and you have rooty or rocky soil, bring a spade as well as/ or a shovel. Also, leave and old shovel hidden somewhere where you build, so if you or one of your mates break theirs, you have a replacement on hand

I usually turn normal square spades or shovels into pointed one's with a angle grinder and sharpen one of the sides for cutting roots. It's also worth finding older tools at bootsales and the likes as they're usually better steel , usually forged rather than stamped. Also worth trying to find ex MOD landrover pioneer tools , the type strapped to the bonnets. Usually a small pick and pointed shovel , they're small enough to fit in a backpack. The Roughneck minitools are also good for a backpack .

ohhh yeah nice I like that!! ever put a serrated edge on one? okkk yehhh thats cool yeh the steel is what you wanna really look at some of the overseas ,metal is terrible, but a lot cheaper so its kind of where ups wanna sit with it to b honest! awesome man you ever find the fold away stuff come loose?? thanks for the feedback bro!

@@KIINGOFSPADES Never serrated one. The takedown tools do get loose but they're good for places that are hard to get too. I've just bought a cheap MacLeod with a fibreglass shaft too , but I've not tried it yet. Also if anyone is looking for triangular cutting edge. Find some combine harvester blades they can be bolted to lots of things to make a tool.

@@jameswhyte3834 good and cheap often don’t go together. Quality steel, consistently good heat treatment of the steel, nice wooden handle with good grain alignment, good design…. typically go with the price. Rogue makes some great tools that are worth checking out. For cheap check out yard sales. Most people get cheap stuff but cheap for $1 isn’t too bad and sometimes nice tools can be found for a decent price. Understand that the edges will probably need to sharpened, wood will need to be sanded smooth/lacquer removed and rubbed with boiled linseed oil. Some people will want way too much money for old junk and others will have junk tools. If you don’t already know how to sharpen tools don’t consider trying to sharpen scissors/loppers/pruners… until you’re able to consistently put an edge that will all the hairs off of your arm or leg. Then start with scissors/pruners that you don’t care about. Putting an edge on a scissor/pruner/loper that needs to be able to work with another like a marriage or it won’t work and likely result in an absolutely ruined tool.

Such a good vid. I have built the lip for abt a 20 foot jump but not sure where to put the landing. Do I just have to send it on my hardtail to see where it is there any other ways

I would love a hack for that too. I've never learned a shortcut. Only thing that helps is laps at the bike park on the jump runs. Even though they're all tables, the ability to gauge speed and distance better only comes through repetition. Works like a charm though. Not saying the first send on a new double isn't scary the first time, but much more confident that it's in the spot it should be.

If your grip sleeves on long handle shovels split, age, or fall off. You can actually remove new ones from broken shovels and put them on your good one using an air compressor between the handle and the sleeve. Similar to the slip on grip method (Extra: you can use some kind of adhesive to make it stick but then you won’t be able to replace it again)

Yooo that’s a great idea, I’ve seen people do that on bike grips too! Yeh love that.. yeh true I guess if you glue you could maybe use a knife or a sander..I find varnishing a wooden handle is good too helps it grip a bit better 🙌🏼💪🏻

I like using used handlebar tape on handles. An ax, pick, pickaxe, mattock handle I’d probably just sand and rub with boiled linseed oil but rakes, shovels, hoes… sand it smooth working up to 220 or 300 grit and then wiping with a few coats of linseed oil and then bar tape. Cork tape is nice. Bike shops often throw used tape in the trash. Bar tape is great on wheelbarrow handles too.

I weld four inches of steel pipe to the mattock so the handle is protected. And lasts longer.

Epic that’s cool, is that the shaft near the head so when the mattock goes in? I usually break my axe there splitting logs 😂✌🏼✌🏼

Shovels are overrated if the ground at your local trails isnt made from playdough. 1. Get yourself one of these shw-fr.de/uploads/tx_multishop/images/products/normal/rhe/rheinische-hacke-mit-gerader-schneide-8.jpeg 2. Remove the handle 3. weld a 10cm hollow shaft onto the eyelet to support the handle better, when levering on it hard. 4. Reinsert the handle with 2k epoxy and a wedge in the middle, just like a normal tool handle 5. Drill a hole through the shaft and handle, then put a lock screw and nut through it. A hoe like this is amazing. Its handle is about 1.6m long so you dont get backpain from working hunched over. The wide edge is great for cutting roots and its still pretty good at working in rocky ground. I have made one of these so far and it has held up for about 200h of hacking onto roots and rocks. The edge has worn down maybe half a cm in the middle and 1cm at the sides but there are still a few houndred hours of life in that hoe.
