Tapping, Bossa, Technology and... Guitar!Chatting with Tosin Abasi
Hey guys!
Back in July, 2021 at John Petrucci's Guitar Camp, Tosin Abasi and I were chatting just before my master class . I thought the conversation was pretty cool so I decided to setup my phone on top of a chair 9 sorry about the audio/video quality) and filmed the whole thing.
Two guitar nerds talking about music : )
So here it is for you! Enjoy! Let me know what you think !

Tosin's playing is very hypnotic and unique, but it sounds best in certain keys using the open strings. While Kiko is more of a schooled musician that can transpose in any key, a little more versatile, phenomenal hand coordination. But Tosin sounds like Tosin, which is special, since so many guitarist sound like other guitarist.

I really appreciate that you brought up Schoenberg and atonal music. It's interesting when you start working with tone rows and atonality and realizing that keys matter much less than just the relationship between individual notes. Understanding for instance the sound and function of a minor scale is important, but not as important to me as understanding specifically what sound a minor 6th has and knowing that it's also a major 3rd depending on the context. Context is everything. Nice shirt by the way, as someone who's a few different kinds of nerd I couldn't comment without bringing that up. lol

As a metalhead, the first time I heard Chega de Saudade was thanks to Angra at the live FNAC . Thanks to that version I've been listening to Bossa Nova for 22 years. Thank you Kiko

I already loved Kiko as an extraordinary musician, but the depth of his musicianship never ceases to amaze! As if there are always more layers to it! He can play (masterfully!) basically anything. He could sit in any session or any gig with anyone! I hope that Mustaine realizes how lucky he is to have him onboard with Megadeth!

I have loved Kiko since the first Angra album. I instantly noticed him way back then and said WOW! For me, the two guys that blew me away was Kiko and Andre and I was a HUGE fan of both from day 1.

Alexander Skriabin is a composer, who comes to my mind, when I hear the harmony and note structure of the piece played in the beginning. Check out Scriabin Mr. Absasi (if you read this 😊), could be a great source of inspriration.

Kiko seems such a nice person and he is an absolute beast on guitar. Knows the theory and has the technique down but I am really amazed at what a great guy he seems to be. I mean I can play pretty much everything I want and with enough practice everything I can't but I do not think I can be as polite, happy and warm person as he is. Thank you for sharing this, Tosin is a pioneer and your friendly conversation is full of jems!
