paper and pen, pencil and eraser, glue and scissors, crayon and tape
origami and construction paper, notebook and textbook, ruler and protractor, compass and magnet
pencil case and scratch pad, report card and message
gold star and punishment and beads and shoes and pebbles and
forget it and search for it and lose it and find it and
break it and toss it and find it and fix it, your treasure
ethics and language and belongings and missing things and
math and social studies and homework and gym uniforms and
lies and truth and fads and play and
telling secrets and a voice murmuring close to the ear,
everything, everything, I can't remember it...
finally, I can forget.
I can change. I can change.

i’ve seen a lot of different theories about this song, but my favourite is that it’s about childhood trauma and how it can be so easily forgotten and yet it can stay with you for your whole life. the lyrics go from basic school supplies and elementary-esque related things (pens, pencils, notebooks, tape and pebbles) to more sophisticated things (lies and truth, secret stories whispered in your ear.) eventually, you hear “i can’t remember” followed immediately after by “i’ve finally forgotten.” it’s the bittersweet juxtaposition of being able to forget traumatic memories and the knowing that your childhood was taken away from you. i like that the final lyric is “i can change… i can change.” it’s a nice ending.

From the look of some of the English translations and comments, I wonder if this is an adult looking back to their childhood memories, slipping away as they grown up. Maybe its the mundane routines making the speaker unable to act against their schedule; it becomes second nature as they forget important events in their life. From the monotype-like animation to the effects of the lighting, it feels unwelcoming. Like entering in an abandoned building, staring white walls while searching with a flashlight. Imagery of hands resting symbolizing a death or someone has given up; a white line wiggling about in an enclosed square could be a metaphor for trying to break their boundaries, but their spirit slowly dies out under the weight of it all. Maybe they accept their circumstances by become one with monotonous shape. That could be one form of change. I might be projecting a little but seeing these abstract effects make the lyrics impactful imo. It fits with the aesthetic per say ahaha. Thank you Kikuo for this experimental track and Yuka Sato for the animation! Really enjoyed this one. I hope we get news about KikuoMiku6 sometime soon. Edit: I wrote this comment on my phone and clarified some thoughts on pc. Sorry if I didn't made any sense hours ago.

Agreed. This song is nothing short of unsettling. It's made in a way that will make anyone feel uncomfortable. Something you would feel from a mundane lifestyle that's getting the best of you. The footsteps are the beginning feel the most unsettling to me that slowly meld with the music. I saw that black hand as a symbol of getting burnt out from that kind of mundane looping lifestyle. The hands are trying to grasp something around the end, that's looks like as if the target just keeps slipping through despite the vigour the hand had and it again became black. Really curious what that last line is supposed to mean. Even with my broken Japanese, I can understand it saying "I will change". Change what exactly? And how?

Tuyetnhi P. I agree. When she says 'I've finally forgotten' it makes me think maybe there was a traumatic event during said period. Kikuo, the way he writes all his music, you can tell has gone through so much. Maybe this is in his point of view? Like how Wowaka and Pinocchio-P write their songs about themselves. All I know is Kikuo is a soft boi and we need to protect him lol

My interpretation: There's a big victim of school violence, so memories and images about school are trauma for the person. Accordingly, things existing in the classroom which are recited in this music(紙(paper), ペン(pen), 内緒の話と耳元でささやく声 (secret story and whispering voice)) are pieces of memories and images that are trauma for the person. However, after reciting the things, words like 'I forgot all those things' and 'I can change' comes out. That means the person forgot the things that is trauma for him or her and is willing to change himself or herself. I think this music is so hopeful!

my understanding of this song is apparently much darker than most of the comments i've seen and i'm. huh to explain a bit: when a person goes through trauma as a child (especially if there's more than one traumatic event/incident it stems from), it can result in memory loss since said memories are too painful to process at the time. more often than not, though, things other than the event(s) from said person's childhood can be lost with it, like school, old friends, small events, places, times, etc. i can relate to this song because it's heavily distorted and sounds dreamy, distant, and creepy while still being about elementary school; it ties in almost perfectly with losing your memories of childhood and attempting to piece them back together from loose recollections.
@anna84259
@anna84259 3 жыл бұрын
This. As someone who got through the trauma as a child, it's exactly how it feels. Memory comes in random small fragments sometimes - that's why there's paper, scissors etc, you can't really understand why you even remember it /so suddenly/ in the first place,, and often you can't place them together at all because most of the puzzle pieces are lost (like some of these sounds), the ones not still feel eerie and muffled though you still feel something's wrong, not the way it should be. Uneasy and anxious. And that's how this song feels.
@dorkchou7033
@dorkchou7033 3 жыл бұрын
I really like this interpretation, the images of red hands constantly reaching out and trying to grab something only to have reality seemingly bend to get away from their grasp? It's so like the mind, twisting and uncontrollable. Not to mention the red hands also give the vibe of something wrong, some warning to stop. Maybe the memories they're reaching for are painful and that's why everything moves around so wildly. The mind in a desperate uncontrollable bid to protect itself. I donno if I'd bet money on this conclusion but it is my favorite by far.
@anna84259
@anna84259 3 жыл бұрын
To add: the worm in a square may be our mind "locking" the memories and the waves of different colors may be the little memories themselves sliding through the defence by bits. The overwhelming colors later on may be the more "massive" flashbacks, the ones that consume you and leave in hysteria - personally I have them sometimes, or intrusive thoughts surrounding a traumatic event/s.

yeah, most of kikuo's stuff hits me like this but this one in particular feels like right after a real bad one, like the other songs are the breakdown itself and this is what remains after. you don't so much have coherent thoughts as just lingering sensations, the flashbacks still coming but not even of meaningful things anymore, just base concepts. thats usually when I can finally get some sleep

My interpretation of this song is as the character builds up talking about supplies and the secrets they used to tell in school the characters voice inflection goes up and the music begins to pick up and i think the character is reminiscing as an adult and the distortion is them forgetting. Theyre desperately trying to remember what it was like to be a kid. The box with the white snake in it could either be the person navigating through life, feeling trapped, suppressing memories im not really sure. After the character said they have forgotten theres this little pawn person and it gets sliced in half and for a few frames it looks like two people hugging or trying to and phasing through one another maybe just learning to let go of the old memories of childhood and fully progress into being an adult?
@adamantarts6056
@adamantarts6056 4 жыл бұрын
Holy fuck what if its about Alzheimers and losing not only your memories but yourself. holy shit holy shit holy shit the snake in the box is trying to remember all the past thoughts, waltzing around in an empty head, the two figures who pass through one another could be a family member our main character has now forgotten due to their condition. The only line that has been stumping me for the entire time is the last line I can be changed.
@Marispider
@Marispider 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamantarts6056 I took it in a far more hopeful light - the person has trauma relating to school (maybe directly BECAUSE of school, especially since Japan has such high rates of adolescent stress/suicide for that reason) and as they grow up and graduate, they're finally able to move on. Whether the memories are purposefully forgotten (which I think is more likely, since they mention some memories being revisited and "fixed" which suggests introspection or therapy) or the person just repressed it all, the memories finally fade away and they realize that they can change as a person and they are no longer stuck in the relentless backbreaking routine school can force you into. I didn't even think this song was about Alzheimer's, but that adds a whole new horrifying angle to this. Maybe the last line could be some morbid relief and finally letting go of everything, like all their ties have been cut and they're free? Or even naive hope that they can somehow recover?

(I'm not native) I think this song is giving a positive message Experienced terribe times while childhood (ijime=bullied) -> Can't remove the memory from his/her mind ->finally could remove it by a mental shock -> desides to live a different life without any obstacles in his/her mind

Let me try to explain this song. Paper,pen,pencil,eraser... Japanese elementary school students are supposed to have those utensils. And also “flower circle” (💮means ✔️),”crosses”(🙅‍♀️), moral education class, Japanese class,and so on, all those words relate to an elementary school life. And this girl never remember those pieces of her memory. But she sounds happy...

I feel like this is about recovering from childhood trauma and amnesia caused by said trauma. The school/childlike theme and mentions of not remembering it all makes me think that it’s trauma, and the recovering part is because it says “I can be changed.” Plus, the foggy and overall vibe of the video fits it, too.

I haven't seen any comments mention this yet but at 2:23 it looks like a person is pierced with something. Then it looks like hands trying to grab something but being unable to get a hold of it (maybe a representation of how they're struggling to get a hold of their old memories). I just really like the animation

I think its about the person that finally graduated highschool or college, where the person was not satisfied or having troubles with its school life, the person may also have no freedom to its routine even in to its liking so once the person graduated, the person can finally change and become what it wants

This song is a bit creepy.... But it reminds me of some sort of really old mechanical voicebox type thing you find in your attic and you decide to play it. The audio is warbly, the video is dark, like an old electronic losing power might do. All in all this is great sound design, goes to show Kikuo is great at his craft

Childhood Trauma is serious issue, especially when it comes with other factors, unloving parent, parent's financial issue, and you trying to make sense of the world while you're slowly losing that innocent youth of yours, wondering as the day goes by about a human life, seeing life and death in front of you, not realising the importance of it. But as time goes on it becomes distant memory, and for extreme case you'd completely forgot about it, you reborn and become someone else. Mine wasn't in that extreme case, though i wouldn't say having my memory suppressed isn't any better, no human being should be going through this. It doesn't make me feel any special or unique going through this, it's just cruel, it makes you feel like you don't really exist, but instead living in a vivid memory that starts to become clearer but more fake to you, you can't tell what's real and what's not, but you have to keep on living because that's what you've been doing for years. But i wonder, does living a life that doesn't seem real and distant memories felt like a dream is any better than Death itself. i may never know, i'll never get to experience a normal childhood, if such thing ever existed. 'tthirdmember trans rights' does a good job at interpreting the song's meaning including audio distortion, i'm surprised that people can understand and empathise themselves without having to experience it themselves to that extend, but i guess that's what psychologist are for. Which is a good thing because at least i get to know that i'm not the only one that i have to see it? it's probably weird to describe feeling as "seeing it" but that's best i can describe it.

I listened to this song in my final year in highschool before graduation. I remember going to the washroom during class with my headphones playing this on the lowest volume. It would usually be empty and I would just close myself up in the stall and kind of just stand there. I had really bad anxiety throughout all of highschool. Listening to this song would greatly calm me down.
