We stopped off at the small town of Kilkeel, that lies on the southern Co Down coast, just south of the Mourne Mountains. Kilkeel is the home of the largest fishing fleet in Northern Ireland. We take a dander round the thriving fishing harbour, passing some of the boats in the fleet and fish-processing factories. The rest of the fleet is out at sea. We then move on to the Mourne Coastal Walk.

Tom, definitely a fresh day on the coast😊 That is a busy harbour and some collection of fishing boats, agree that Killybegs takes it up a notch or two more with the size of the fleet and boats. Also, totally agree on your description of the tough life working on those boats, hard earned wages!

Yes a very hard life Gerry even with all out modern add ond and helps. Danger lurks at every turn. 've seen what a rough sea can do to even the biggest of these boats and I've come across enough sea wall, tributes to the lost, plaques and grave headstones to know that there is a thin margin between life and death. I'm glad this wasn't my life. Nothing romantic about it.

Many thanks for posting this Tom….my son and I were walking along by the boats as you were and the Master of the red Steadfast invited us onboard for a guided tour….just fantastic boat….immaculately clean prawn fishing vessel. We love Northern Ireland and would love to buy a place there. Regards from England😉

Hi Derrick, great to hear from you. A lot of people from other parts of the UK have mixed feelings about N Ireland when they are on home turf and that is very understandable when you consider what has gone on here over the years. The opinions change remarkably when folk actually come to visit though. Quality of life, lower house prices, good educational standards, general friendliness, low rates of road traffic, little congestion easy paring. It all adds up. The pay is not as good as in southern mainland UK but this is offset by the many benefits. We know a lot of folks who have come here from mainland UK! Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills. ( The weather can be rubbish for long periods I'm afraid! Oh dear! )

@@TomMcClean It’s kind of you to reply Tom. My son is looking to buy a flat in Newcastle. We stayed there a few weeks ago during the🌪, so we know how blustery it gets😂. We felt really at home amongst the NI locals….home from home even. It feels unspoilt with beautiful scenery all around. We hired a car at Belfast International, looked at flats in Newcastle, Dundrum by the Castle (fabulous views), Portaferry, Bangor. You are very fortunate to live there. He’s planning a return trip in spring. Subscribed for more of your content.(I’m 72😱)

Hi again Derrick, It would be unthinkable and rude not to reply!!! You are never far from anywhere in our wee place. Belfast is generally much more expensive than anywhere else but a lot less than most places on the mainland. The further west you go too generally the price drops. Pace of life is a lot slower here too. I wish your son well in his endeavours and many thanks for your support. I'm having so much fun with KZfaq. I 'talk' to folks from all over the world. Many left here 30, 40, 50, years ago!

Hi Tom, this was interesting as we had at one time spotted online a house opposite the seafront at Kilkeel which appealed. Perhaps not November to March lol! FF

We were visiting a friend who lives near the seafront in one of the avenues at the end of our walk. From her ,you are 5-10 minutes of a walk from the town centre. It is very much community orientated in Kilkeel. Everyone speaks to you on the street and everyone knows everyone else. You are 50 miles from Belfast 14 to Newcastle and 20 to Newry. Great views and walks but yes bracingly windswept in Winter/Autumn.
