So this was the true story Valkyrie was based on. Seems like the film actually got a lot right.

Also caught up in the plot, the important German theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, not an active plotter, but supportive of some who were, was arrested and ultimately killed in Flossenberg just before liberation by advancing Allied forces. His book "The Cost of Discipleship" is a classic. He founded a Christian alternative church to the state church dominated by Nazi regime.

Thank you for your service. My grandfather served in WWII in Europe, he wouldn’t talk too much about his time there so I’m not sure of details on where he was although I do know he was part of the D-day invasion. My father served in Vietnam and was in Saigon during the Tet Offensive. My dad told me the story of when the bombs started going off and everyone was scrambling for their rifles and other stuff he saw his Master Sargent hiding under a bunk, crying and holding his sidearm shaking. My dad was an E-4 at the time and grabbed the master sgt and slapped him across his face. Anyway I love history and especially war history. Ever since I found this channel I’ve been watching nearly non stop. Great videos!

Thanks for another captivating video. How different history might have been if the briefcase was placed a few feet differently. From such small things does history revolve.

Maybe Hitler was ecstatic after the blast because Morell gave him an injection of something. Morell was good that way.

Here are a few great military podcasts this audience might also enjoy: Jocko's podcast (former navy seal commander), Mike Drop by Mike Ritland (Former navy seal), Vigilance Elite podcast (1 episode so far but it's good), and Hardcore History by Dan Carlin (probably the best history podcast around). The first 3 can all be found on youtube with video if that's your thing.

The footage of the show trials is on KZfaq. I once watched some of it and couldn't help but wonder why these people didn't commit suicide rather then go through the humiliation of dealing with Freisler! Some of the plotters look like they were drugged or at least bewildered by months of interrogation/torture.

Keep in mind that Germans of that era were taught to obey authority without question and keep any oaths made, however foul. It was extraordinarily difficult for them to behave otherwise even when faced with a judge like Freisler who hectors like a madman.

It's unfortunate that after all the planning von Stauffenberg got careless. What he should have done is set the bomb off himself standing next to Hitler or simply shot the man and then himself. He had to know failure would lead to horrible tortures and mass executions including his own. But even had he succeeded, it's likely that Himmler or Goering would have stepped in unless the full Valkyrie plan had worked, which was a fairly unlikely proposition. von Stauffenberg was a patriot and he certainly didn't fear death. It's just unfortunate that the plot failed.
