A couple vacationing in Mexico encountered a number of killer whales swimming alongside their boat during a trip.

This is one of the main reasons they are the APEX predators of the sea with the main reason being their intelligence. Their speed and stamina can’t be matched by most of their prey and other predators. It’s incredible how they will chase a whale (like a pack of wolves) for that same amount of time and for miles, til the whale fatigues.
@cloedythemedium2 жыл бұрын
That's why also there shouldn't been kept in small bathtubs like Seaworld and Miami Seaaquarium! There need to swim alot and fast!

Killer Whales are closely related to dolphins, and both are highly intelligent marine mammals who know exactly what humans are. There are no cases of humans being attacked by Killer Whales in the wild. What you see here in this video are Killer Whales doing the same thing that dolphins do whenever humans in boats are nearby, they swim alongside the boats and breach playfully.
@44excalibur9 жыл бұрын
***** No, humans are never on the menu with Orcas. Like dolphins, Orcas are highly intelligent and well aware of what humans are. They have a natural curiosity about humans whenever we enter the water because like us, they are mammals with very large brains. It's ironic that you mentioned the Orca would make Jaws its bitch, because Orcas have been known to attack and kill Great White Sharks, but they are no threat to humans.
@TheOrmsson9 жыл бұрын
killer whales are dolphins, the largest of the dolphin family
@44excalibur9 жыл бұрын
TheOrmsson Yes, that's kind of what I meant when I said they are "related" to dolphins. Both Killer Whales and dolphins belong to the oceanic dolphin family.
@victormcvic35799 жыл бұрын
I bet if you threw someone into the sea with 10 orcas and left them there floating on the surface it would take about 30 mins or so before they start smashing the human out the water like a seal playing "games" with you...I'm pretty certain we are not on the food chain , but if left with them for so long out in the wild they would kill you. I don't dislike orcas but they have always scared me more than what a shark has. very (happy/agressive) animals. weird mix of friendly but incredibly brutal killers, they play with their food too by slapping seals around into the air breaking their bones to dust before they tare them apart. so if I was given the choice to be thrown to sharks or orcas I would pretty much cut my loses and hop into the sharks, I think I'd have a better chance of swimming away and not being playfully followed by a pod of orcas while you totally shit yourself. at least with sharks they decide weather they are gona eat you or leave you within a minute or 2.
@44excalibur9 жыл бұрын
Davie otops Nope, if you threw someone into the sea with 10 Orcas, the Orcas would more than likely not bother the person, or they'd perhaps approach them with curiosity, but no differently than dolphins. There is a video of a dog that was swimming along a beach near feeding Orcas, and one of them approached the dog and pushed the dog to shore in order to make sure the dog was safely out of the way. The only reason that Orcas do what they do with seals is because seals are on the menu; humans and dogs are not.

No fatal attacks have occurred in the wild, there were attacks but they're accidental. We look nothing like what they normally eat or see in their habitat (fish, squid, crustacea, seals, porpoise,...), so there's no reason for them to attack us. Also many Orcas live couple of miles close to the coasts (residents or transients), so human-Orca contact would be quite common, and yet attacks have remained rare.

@TheMoonchild19698 жыл бұрын
Because they do kill, they are sometimes referred as the wolves of the sea (Panda bears are vegetarians!), they hunt in packs and are extremely vicious with their preys. They kill baby whales while the mother is nursing it by drowning, very horrible. Orcas although have highly developed social skills are very imposing, violent creatures always scouting the territory for Orca females and more baby whales. They are nasty evolved creatures. Don't mess with them...you don't want to deal with those teeths.
@brettperry37378 жыл бұрын
Because aside from humans. Orcas are THE apex predator. As someone else mentioned, they hunt like wolves. Only these wolves weigh five tons, have human-like intelligence, and are notorious for playing with their food while it's still alive. Hell they even kill sharks only to harvest particular organs, before abandoning the carcass and moving on to their next victim. And if that weren't enough; do some research on what they've been known to do to other (larger) species of whales. The real question is; what is it about us that attracts their curiosity even though they don't see us as food?

Katie True, but there are more than one type of toothed whale, and the Orca is a member of the Oceanic dolphin group. That is why they act so much like Dolphins, because they ARE Dolphins.

Michael Price but isn't bent dorsals more prevelant in older males than the younger males or females? I've seen orcas in captivity and they didn't have bent dorsals
@kukui7910 жыл бұрын
***** They're nearly universal in males in captivity -- not in wild orcas, male or females. The captive ones you saw without bent dorsals were likely females (though sometimes captive females get them as well). Occasionally wild orcas have bent dorsals, but it's not very common.

They are Orcas, not killer whales. we don't say killer Lions, or killer Eagles. We must be careful to raise the awareness of how special these creatures are. People are very ignorant and if they think "Killer" whale that puts them at risk. There has never been an injury to a human by an Orca in the wild. Imprisoned orcas have killed, but that was because they should never be caged. Humans are too stupid to recognize the wonder that these creatures are and afford them the respect and dignity they deserve.
@bahcue73819 жыл бұрын
no the name is whale killer not killer whale. It would be like calling a lion a zebra killer or killer zebra.
@ArthurnewmoneywithmeEchols9 жыл бұрын
lol, so when the two of you go swimming with the Orca's be sure to film the event so we can all see just how playful they are. I seriously can't believe you posted that no person has ever been injured by an Orca in the wild smh so you know what every pod of 20 plus whales is up to. I think you just wanted to let people know their scientific name but Orca doesn't care who it eats man or seal
@ChuckCooper9 жыл бұрын
Arthur Echols You miss the point of my post but I'm guessing your just enjoying being cynical and I get it. Here's the point, they should not be caged, and people should not go swimming with them. But I encourage you to find a documented instance of an Orca harming a human in the wild.
@ArthurnewmoneywithmeEchols9 жыл бұрын
I agree they shouldn't be caged I also think the term killer whale is accurate and might actually save the life of someone who may be ignorant to the threat after seeing free willy or some sea world show. I'm more concerned about the people who mite make a terrible mistake the whales can take care of themselves.
@franklinweston12019 жыл бұрын
Actually theres a bunch of videos on people free diving with orcas and they never were touched or even bothered , they are peaceful creatures. Of course an animal , mammal , or even person can become dangerous once feeling threatened so they could attack but they are very intelligent and know we dont pose a threat to them .

I doubt very much if the orcas would have harmed any of the divers. There are no records of an orca ever attacking a human being in the wild. In fact, what we know about orcas gives us every indication that they are highly intelligent, socialized creatures with strong family bonds and a sense of self.

Let me rephrase - You were dismissing fact because it is 'not interesting' - I was merely pointing out to how ridiculous that it is by doing exactly the same... but you totally missed that. I'm going to be pedantic for a moment and say they're actually dolphins, not whales. They're referred to as whales because it doesn't have specific requirements, and is just generally referred to as a big sea animal. Scientifically/biologically speaking though, killer whales are part of the dolphin family, which probably helps explain their nicer aesthetic.

I love how us people, we think that we have this great connection with animals, and that animals have this voluntary interaction with us, we get so attached. But in reality, these whales, are chasing you off, they are not playing with you, your boat smells, it is loud and it is big, and you are around a family in their turf. If you want to play with them, jump in the water and find out how they got their name.

Yeah... They chased them for a whole hour, just to say get off our turf, I don't think so buddy. Definitely looked like playing to me, NOT trying to attack or kill the people on the boat. My knowledge is 65% from the recent Blackfish documentary and 35% remembered facts from middle school, but I still think it's definitely stronger than some chump's assumption that "killer whale" name = aggressive monster. Killer whales are pretty peaceful creatures who have never attacked a human with the exception of incidents at Seaworld, done by creatures who basically went batshit after being kept in essentially little bitty bathtubs for a decade or more. Killer whales can recognize family members and can mourn the loss of their young. I'm pretty sure these whales here were having a great time flyin' in those waves, and that's all.
