I lost my much beloved wife to glioblastoma in 1998. She was 33 when diagnosed, and died at 35. She left behind a 2-year old daughter, and two mid-teen sons. We had done all the traditional therapies: surgery, chemo and radiation. We even went to Mexico for a few months of bogus "medicine". I wish this therapy was around at that time. I am so glad for those who can now be saved. This is the best news I have heard since losing my wife and best friend.

I have stage four breast cancer. My doctor looked at me in the eye and said “you will live for years, and in your lifetime, there will be a cure. My hope is that you are healthy enough for that cure to work”. I’ve heard similar things for many different types of cancer. They are close. Keep praying for a cure!

A friend of mine passed last year from glioblastoma. Since he was on Medicaid, he wasn't given this care. He asked for standard of care, yet was ignored. This treatment is only for those who can afford it or whose insurance companies approve it. A disgrace.

That is so sad. Did your friend ever contact Duke university? They should take the millions that people have donated and paid to have this cure. The FDA doesn't want a cure too many people would be out of high paying jobs.

They choose 3 people out of 1000 that apply each year and 12000 die from this cancer every year. The doctor that approves people is not going to choose due to an insurance matter. His criteria is based on science.

My sister died at age 35. She lived just two weeks after they found the brain tumor. It was so large it was inoperable. Taking the biopsy caused swelling and it choked the brain stem the same night after the procedure. She left behind her husband and three teenage sons. God please lead these doctors to find a cure.

Glioblastoma (GBM), also referred to as a grade IV astrocytoma, is a fast-growing and aggressive brain tumor. It invades the nearby brain tissue, but generally does not spread to distant organs. GBMs can arise in the brain de novo or evolve from lower-grade astrocytoma.

Though she didn't complete her chemo as it was damaging her kidney. She's doing amazingly, it went so much better than the surgeons thought that it would. So much so that there is only 2% of the tumour left! It's now a case of monitoring to see whether it grows or not. Thank you for the prayers and well wishes 🙏

Same thing with my dad, but it was colorectal cancer. He was 80-yrs-old. Worked out 5 days a week, volunteered on two political campaigns and was my brother's business manager for his psychology practice - in his spare time. He was vibrant, healthy, still mentally sharp, and had no symptoms - other than constipation. He had that checked out cuz he was so regular, and it ended up being an issue. He had a blockage in his colon and needed hospitalization. He was at stage IV, given 6 months with no treatment - up to 6 years if it worked. It didn't. He had the blockage, which put off treatment - then he kept having issues with his blood checks before chemo, and they'd tell him he had to wait another week. He was in horrible pain. He lost his appetite. The chemo ate him up - and it didn't work. He lost 30 pounds - and he was a small framed man. Then he ended up with another blockage. The did surgery, which was what Dad asked for right away, but at that point, he was so weak from losing weight, his body shut down. He became septic and never recovered. It was BRUTAL. He was gone in 4.5 months - January 12, 2019. I'll never forget the date. Cancer is so horrific, it can't be natural. I can't help thinking humans are creating this because of all the changes we've made to nature. 😢

I lost my wife to gliosarcoma June 23, 2004. Gliosarcoma is similar to the glioblastoma discussed in this video but even more aggressive. She fought it with grace and courage for 18 months, 3 times longer than she was given at diagnosis. She was also a 5 year breast cancer survivor, the two cancers being unrelated. The MRI's shown here could have been hers insofar as they're so similar. Seeing these brings back such a rush of painful memories. Sighs, I miss her terribly. Yet my heart is gladdened by this report, with the hope others will not have to endure what she and I did. I have the gray ribbon for brain cancer as my profile avatar. For all those who fought and lost, lest we forget, and to those few who've fought and won, your courage is beyond compare.

@intriverttoo24731 This brought tears to my eyes. My uncle has been living with cancer for over 20 years! Unfortunately, my great-aunt did not. She suffered from complications of the radiation and had to be airlifted to a burn unit where she later passed. I am glad you survived it! I am also tearing up, because an AI-generated family tree erroneously said that my uncle passed. No matter how much technology we have, there is always room for error. I think getting a second opinion regarding treatment options can also help.

That's completely unfair and inconsiderate of many people who are looking at these stories because either they or their friends or family have cancer and they're looking for answers. Please State what the drug was and what type of cancer you had.

My life partner of more than 20 years succumbed to glioblastoma multiforme in about 4 months. For these folks to have kicked it down for all those years is heart-wrenchingly beautiful, for anyone who’s not seen what this beast does will not understand. Duke U. You go! That this beast eventually took these brave souls only speaks to how vital this research is. Thank you Duke.

Scotty I am so, so sorry for the loss of your beautiful lady. Gentle hugs and love. My precious Mam passed because of this horrible tumour. It was the size of a grapefruit before we know. I nursed her until she passed away and I am still broken hearted. I just got her home and within 4 weeks she was gone. I asked her Specialist not to tell her but he did. He said she had a lucid moment and asked him. I can't remember much about that day. I made her a promise to get her home and I did. It was heartbreaking to see her face because she knew she was coming home to die. I miss her so much, she was my best friend. You are in my thoughts. 🕊

It may not have been the cure they had hoped for, bit it did help prolong their lives. In Stephanie's case, it gave her 8 more years... long enough for her parents to see her get married. It may not yet be a cure, but it definitely has potential to be a blessing. That is what needs to be remembered.

It looks like the doctor (2nd patient) died a month after Stephanie in 2020. All three died of a re-occurrence of their brain cancer. The first two had good lives for years before it came back. Brendan had more ongoing issues because of his brain damage from bleeding and had more struggles with it re-appearing quicker but still got years added on. It would seem like this treatment is currently not a "cure" as you mentioned but does give some people extended remission time and maybe it will work better in the future. As a cancer survivor of over 20 years myself I personally never say I am cured but just note that I am currently cancer free and hope to stay that way. I don't think anyone that has had cancer ever knows if it will come back............

@@pattyfluegel7816 Yes Brendan volunteered and became the first person to have a second Polio treatment (along with Chemo) when his cancer returned but he died a year later as it did not have the same positive effect (he had other health issues as well). This treatment is extending life for some which is great as they have no hope but it is still far from being a "cure".

I am very grateful for the success of this much needed therapy. As an RN my heart dropped when I realized that Stephanie Hopper was Stephanie Lipscomb, the trail blazer of this research. 60 minutes should add her maiden name at 54:10. May her light continue to shine through and through to these brave souls and their families.

@Mel M Yes, it seemed given Stephanie's young age & then recovering to do what she wanted as a career, a nurse, this was a shock. To have 8 years added to her life & swept away is tear jerking. This kind of makes me wonder, and likely those at Duke doesn't yet, what's the life expectancy? Yes, she was the 1st patient who received the trial, and probably the longest to live out of all. At least she did get 8 more years, mostly quality ones, but I wonder, would just a tiny little more or less had made a difference? She was a brave and amazing woman. Remember when they greatly increased dosage, that's when outcomes weren't as good, however I don't expect everyone to receive the same. Later, some would get less than Stephanie & do good, but we don't know when the list was last up to date, because she was alive. Too, maybe it was the type of cancer being treated. It's my hope that Stephanie Lipscomb's journey is the beginning of something large.❤ Because for decades, over half or 3/4th a century, treatment was radiation, surgery & chemo (or burn, slash & poison). Many are caught in late Stage 3 or 4, as am sure many of these patients were & desperate. Some lives a few weeks, others a few years, depending on how early or late caught, age & am sure physical condition as well. Hopefully will be tested on other cancers & soon, because there's lots of other patients that wants a shot at life too.💯

That was the saddest part to me. I thought maybe she survived but no, it must have come back 8 years later. At least she got those 8 years. My grandmother had a different form of cancer, and after surgery, radiation, and chemo, the cancer seemed to go away, and she went back to a seemingly normal life for 6 years, and then all of a sudden she got really sick, and they found out the cancer had come back. It seems like cancers get more aggressive when then return. She died a month after it came back.

My best friend/sister, just past away in January 2023 from a glioblastoma that was the size of a golfball behind her right eye. She went through the radition, chemo, surgery, the whole nine yards. After surgery the tumor just went on a speed growth. She was given 3 to 6 months to live. She lived for 5 1/2 month from the first day of diagnosis. She was a veteran, and was receiving help from the veterans hospital, and a special oncologly hospital in Florida. I miss her so much.
