I would argue that the Pistol is not the worst gun in the game; the Double-barrel Shotgun is arguably even worse. It's hard to aim properly (leading to inconsistent hits), isn't accurate beyond 40 meters (serious damage dropoff), is loud enough for anything to hear within a mile of you, and for what, no more damage than the shotgun has? You also have to reload every 2 shots, which gets REALLY inconvenient. It's only really useful in really close quarters situations or when a dino's stuck or trapped. The pistol is at least reasonably accurate out to 70-80 meters, is quite easy to use, and isn't nearly as loud (a stego ~100 meters from me didn't run when I fired a pistol at it). Plus, rapid firing rate never hurts in a gun. Much better as a backup to use in a pinch. You can even use it as a primary if you're good enough with it. I make a point of always taking the pistol with me on hunt. The DB shotgun, I almost never use. Then again, just my opinion. Maybe I am just bad with the DB shotgun, but that's just me.
